So I have this friend who cheated on the Syracuse scenario, and when the level was succesfully completed the game actually called her on it!
In big red letters it told her that she had cheated.

I don't remember this happening in C3. Is it a new shame feature?

I . . .uh, I mean, she had to laugh when she saw it.

Nothing like having the game rub our noses in it when we cheat! :D Big thumbs up to that one!

I dont know if C3 did this or not since I didn't know about cheats back in the days that I was playing C3 and the other 2D building games.

OK I just got that message and as far as I know, I didn't cheat. What do they consider cheating? I didn't use any codes. :( The only thing I really did that I can think of was send 3 gifts in a row right at the end to increase my favor when all other goals had been reached. But I wouldn't think that would be considered cheating.

Another thing I did that maybe affected it: I was having trouble playing on my laptop so I installed the game on my desktop & transferred the saved games there. When it didn't work on the desktop (even after buying a new video card :( ) I decided to try the laptop again. I managed to get Caralis done & was well into Corinth when I got frustrated with the crashing so I reformatted my HD forgetting to save my games so I had to use the games saved previously on the desktop which meant replaying Caralis & Corinth :( . But I really don't think that would do it would it? Although I did notice my name is missing from the screen in this pic so maybe transferring the games back & forth did something?

Anyway, this really puzzles me as I am not aware of doing anything that would be considered cheating & would really like to know why I got this message on my screen. I'm attaching a pic so you can all see what it looks like. How embarassing. :(

Honestly, I didn't cheat. So any ideas why it would say that? I sure hope it doesn't appear on every game now. :(

I got the message, too. It happened in the first scenario after I made a change in the Newconstants file to workaround the trade route problem.

I also made a gift at the end to finish the scenario, so I don't know which act the computer considered cheating.

Oh right, I forgot about that. I made that change too and thankfully all seems to be working well now (although my crashes weren't just on world maps but so far so good). Maybe that's where the cheating thing came from...good to know I'm not the only "cheater". ;) Misery likes company. :D

After reading this thread, it appears Mark Duffy has more pull with TM than I originally thought.;)

Putting in a message like that is SO MARK DUFFY.:D

Thanks for posting, you sorry bunch of cheaters.:D I've not gotten to see that screen yet.

Seriously - If most of the people are seeing this after having to mod some type of file to get the game to work correctly... don't you figure modding that file is prolly what caused the "cheat" message to come up. Gifting to Caesar is a big part of the game.... I can't believe THAT would cause you to see the "cheat message.":o

Yes, if you change the line in the ini file to fix the trade route crashing problem the game will probably give you a cheat message. I've seen a couple reports like this already. The game obviously detects hacks to those data text files in some way, which is actually good if you think about it.

I think it is SUPERB. Thanks TM!!!!!:D

Yes it is and I'd rather play the game as it came packaged but unfortunately, this is the only way I can play it on my computer. :(

My error. I meant the data text files like NewConstants.txt not the game ini file.

I am clueless. What trade route crashing bug? Is there a constant I am supposed to change in some file so I don't get a bug?

On some computers the game crashes when they go to open a trade route. A workaround was found by editing the NewConstants.txt file used by that game. Changing a value on one of the lines in that from 1 to 0 allowed these people to open trade routes in the game, but after they completed the mission they will probably see a YOU CHEATED message on the victory screen as a result. For now it is the only way these people can play the game until a real fix is found for the problem.

Since this is their only workaround for now...

I make a motion we don't force them to sign up for cheater's annonymous course.:D

Dat's a Fact, Jack!!! [EDIT: This refers to the second line only, to be perfectly clear.]

However, TM had the Cheater Exposure in COTN before I ever got here.

Do I absolutely LOVE Tilted Mill?

You bet your ass !!! :) :) :)

Ah! So if I don't know anything about this bug count myself lucky and don't worry about it? Thank you for the info, Keith. I won't worry that my game isn't crashing because I have overlooked some glaring feature of the game - like opening trade routes. :o :)

I just finished the next scenario & it says I cheated again. I guess that'll be the way it is for me. I know I'm not 'really" cheating but I still don't like it...it makes me feel like I am. :(
