I just got the game today and I'm having problems in Verona (Kingdom Campaign). The first time it crashed I received the following message...
"The ati2dvag display driver has stopped working normally...."
The second time it just froze.
I have downloaded and installed the patch.
I am playing on a brand new Dell Dimension E510 which I bought so I could be sure to play this game. My old computer never could have handled it. I am attaching the dxdiag file.
If I have to update my video driver, I would really appreciate some help, since all I really do on the computer is play games.

I have downloaded and installed the patch.
Did you reboot after patching?

Yes you will have to update!
With your Video-card-install-CD came the 6.14.0010.6561 driver from 8/4/2005 which is ATI-CATALYST-DRIVER Version 6.0 or even lower.
Nowadays you can use Catalyst 6.9 when installed shows up in dxdiag as 6.14.0010.6635
Here is your help coming:
Get the driver Catalyst 6.9 for XP from www.ati.com and download it
also find the ATI-Unistaller tool there and download it
on your system go to "Installed Software list" and uninstall the ATI DISPLAY DRIVER
when done DENY the reboot and also uninstall from the list the possible ATI Catalyst Control Center or Control Panel (if installed)
reboot now!
pc comes back in "safe-mode" ........no worry
find the Cat-uninstaller, install it and run it.
Look into explorer in C and delete any ATI-folder you see (not the Catalyst 6.9 !!!)
find the downloaded Catalyst 6.9-pack
install the lot....wait for it to ask for reboot and do so
after reboot look into dxdiag and find the number 6.14.0010.6635 and you are done!
You have sucsessfully installed a driver for your ATI-card!

I installed latest CPU and graphic drivers and the problem didn't go away. The game would freeze for 10 secs, render a frame or two, then freeze for another 10secs.
Then I tried to play the game in window mode and everthing run smoothly.
To run game in window mode, goto your installed directory, look for CaesarIV.ini. Look for "Full Screen Mode" and change the number from 1 to 0.
