View Full Version : Crashing on saving (about half the time)

Hey there gang, been reading a bit to find a bug like mine. Glad I dont have the trade route thingy or the corrupted save thingy... But I do have one.
Ok so here it is; I left autosave on, about half the time it works great, the other half it crashes (game freeze, message from MS to send the report, duh). I manually remove it with ctrl-alt-del and kill the app. I then just restart the game and reload that save.
I've been doing this for all the tutorials and 2 republics missions so far.
Oh and Ctrl-S (to quicksave) I only tried once since, 1) it crashed 2) the save was not usable afterward. I save a couple of times the "normal" way and it did'nt crash (I may have been lucky or...)
OR... Could it be related to the savegame name? Quick and autosave both use the full date format including minutes and secs. And these are the saves that crash...
Anyway, I'm still able to enjoy the game, but it's getting annoying. The good part is, without that bug I'm not sure I'd be able to stop and get sleep! ;)

Just to add a bit. I tried playing the ceasar challenge a bit. Seems it has the same problem but in this particular case I can't recover.
Crash description:
While playing (not saving it seems) the game crash.
If I restart the game and try to click "load" instead of new in the Ceasar challenge screen I crash instantly.

Hello ElPape, last try coming!
please try out this:
Open your C/Windows/Temp-folder and delete the contents (2 or 3 items will be left I presume)
Open C/Windows/Prefetch and delete the contents (Yes you can do that!)
Do defrag your C-drive even if it takes longer (you haven`t got another partition) and let it have a rest while it is defragging.
Please reboot now and try the game again! :)

Ok I did defrag just prior to installing Ceasar. My temp file was pretty empty (I tend to clean it up). Nice about the /prefetch, I cleaned it up.
But, yep, still crashing on saving.

Hello ElPape,
sorry to hear!
Would you like to try latest advice from Keith?
The turning off or reduction of the in-game video settings then turning them back on or up one at time has been made a good number of times in other threads. This has helped some people and not others. All anyone with the problem can do is keep trying.
The latest "fix" for the problem is to try running the game in the Windows 2000 compatabilit mode. This helped one person that I know of so far.
Give a note if it helped...........:)

C:\C4Patch\Source\Common\FileStream.cpp
????????
Is there a C4Patch folder in your C: root directory folder?

There's no c4patch dir on my computer but that might well be a software created dir (it exists only while the program is running and even then they may create it just when they need it...)
I'll try the win2000 thingy for kicks and lowering the graphics (altouht I can't see why graphics would disturb a file access)
Edit: Ok tried the win2000 same crash

I Seem to have fixed the problem!!!
I have both Norton Internet Security and AntiVir. I disabled the Norton Anti Virus (since AntiVir now has that function). And Voila, no more crash while saving!
Now, one question remains... I have invalid online saves... How can I delete them? I mean there's something stored on the server (like the pic of the city), can I delete my saves locally and restart the maps?

Did you ignore the "endless repeating warning" from ANTIVIR NOT to have a second antivirus running??? :D
