Hi, I'm new to these city builder games, so bear with me.

I finished the Kingdom levels, and now I'm in the first Republic level. But it's quite a daunting jump for someone new like me, as i'm not really sure what or how to build. The kingdom levels were all pretty simple and small, but Syracuse is much larger, and I have no idea how to organize or in what order I should be building things. Everything was within range of each other due to the size of the map, but now I'm faced with the task of coverage and organizing things effeciently.

I'm sure it changes from level to level, but can anyone help me get a basic idea?

Oh wow that is incredible. I would have never thought of that :(. Thanks Zamolxes, and thank you for the welcome :). I think i'll get the hang of this eventually, but I never thought to put my reservoir in the center.

If you want take a look of one possible Syracuse lay out, you can downlaod a save after winning.

Well I went back and took on the idea of using a centralized city and it worked well. I had trouble at first with the Equites constantly wanting to leave, due to low pay (even though it was above average), but eventually I was producing more than I could even consume or export. This was mostly due to me needing jobs for my people.

In the end the layout worked well, everything had perfect coverage and just about everyone had a green happy face. Thank you for the help

I went back and looked the Syracuse posted, and I have to say, I definately overdid things in a sense. I didn't realize I wouldn't need patricians, nor the other religions. I think I built just about everything available and was producing so much everything just stopped after a while. I was still making money, but industry and resource farms stood still. Well I guess i'll be prepared for harder task :P.

Glad you pulled through it. Over doing somethings is usually no big deal (too much food and/or goods). Too much housing might get you in trouble though. If your unemployment percentage (labor advisor or forum) is too high, you will get the red underpaid icon. So far, 10% unemployment seems tolerable, much higher your people will leave (including the ones you need) until it balances out.

If you build too many houses, evict the ones you dont need, just not too many. It is better to have unemployed than job openings.

By the way, overlay is a very useful tool. Tells you different coverages so you can see where you need to place things. This is especially useful for water, religion (for benevolence), and health. When you start making large sections of partricians, you almost have to use the overlays to see who is getting what services. Once you learn the service radius of each building, your cities will thrive and you will find you wont need as many workers anymore, which is important on smaller maps.
