Hi all,
Well I saw the other two post on this same exact problem. I can't seem to login. It gives me the error "Failed to connect to the server..." yadda yadda. I've been working on this for hours today. I went in to my firewall and added the exception for caesar IV. Actually I got so frustrated that I turned the firewall off and I still get the error. I also added the port 3306. Nope no change. I uninstalled and reinstalled. Zip no change. If someone could fill me in on anything that can resolve this I would be forever grateful.

Thanks,
Rickus Biggus

Did you install the mysql and .net that came on the caesar 4 disk?

Hi,
Yes I did. I just got done checking connections and what not. There doesn't seem to be a problem there. I've been working on this problem for about 4-5 hours now. It's getting me very frustrated. I lowered the graphics options so that when I click on Log In I can more quickly minimize the screen to see if it's asking me for permission to allow the game to access the internet. It sped the switching up considerably but there was nothing there.

Did you apply the patch?

Hello,
Yes I did the patch and am not smoking any more...no really yes I did patch the game. I'm completely at a stand still with the online portion of the game. I think I'll go have a cigarette now!

Another piece of the puzzle to check: can you reach the server?

- From the Windows Start menu, select "Run...".
- type "cmd" and click OK.
- enter "ping caesarivonline.com".

You should get four lines that start with "Reply from 198.74.35.49..." and some statistics. If you don't, there's an issue with your connection to the internet (or, less likely, an issue with the server, or something going wrong with a chunk of the internet between you and the server).

Hi,
Thank you for replying. I did what you said and this is the result:

Pinging caesarivonline.com [198.74.35.49] with 32 bytes of data:

reply from 198.74.35.49: bytes=32 time=23ms ttl=51
reply from 198.74.35.49: bytes=32 time=23ms ttl=51
reply from 198.74.35.49: bytes=32 time=24ms ttl=51
reply from 198.74.35.49: bytes=32 time=23ms ttl=51

ping statistics fro 198.74.35.49:
packets: sent = 4, received = 4, lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
minimum = 23ms, maximum = 24ms, average = 23ms

Well there it is for what it's worth. I am assuming that I can get through but it doesn't seem that the game is allowing it. Let me know what you come up with and thanks again.

I assume you're using the US version since you applied the patch?

Also, are you using a router? If so, that might be the next place to look into...

Hi Reed,
Yes I have the US version. At least I hope so! I bought it at Best Buy in San Francisco, CA. I don't have a router though so I don't think that that is the problem. Thanks for the fast reply. Would my directx printout help you?

Yeah, wouldn't hurt.

I'm not sure what else to suggest, but maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling the MySQL connector if you haven't. Someone else may have other ideas as well.

Any software firewalls, such as ZoneAlarm, or even the Native XP firewall? I would check these to be sure they are set to allow you to connect to the internet in the game. The XP firewall comes with XP, so be sure to check if it has an exception listed for Caesar 4. Also programs like McAfee have firewalls in them, and you must set them up to allow connections. If you do have a firewall and are unsure how to fix this problem, just say so.

Hi Cagnanopy,
Yes I do have McAfee but I was unaware of it having a firewall in the program. I'll look to see if I can find it but if you could tell me more specifically how to do the exception it would be appreciated. I have made the exception for the XP firewall though.

Thanks

Hi!

It is the same problem here as Biggus' only that mine is the german version, so no patch available....
Reinstall... firewall exception... firewall off... router config changed etc etc pp - nothing...
the only difference is that i get TWO errormsgs.:

1. Can't connect bla bla
and then
2. that i need the original gamedata (got the prob with the tradelanes... change as forumadvice and it worked - thats why i reinstalled...)

now i got two probs: first can't play online and second crashing when opening trades....

For anyone interested in i added my dxdiag...

hope that somebody can help

McAfee is a suite, where it has several things it does. If you have its firewall active, which is quite possible, you would need to add exceptions to all active firewalls. Windows firewall is different than other firewalls since it will allow outgoing connections without any trouble... its when you get sent data back that issues pop up...

Anyways, you may or may not have McAfee suite installed, which has the firewall with it.....

"McAfee Personal Firewall

1. Right-click the McAfee icon, point to Personal Firewall, then click Internet Applications.
2. In the Permissions list, right-click the permission level for an application, and click Delete Application Rule.

The next time the application requests Internet access, you can set its permission level to re-add it to the list."

The above, is a bit helpful... though try this link on how to do it...

Link for McAfee firewall (http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=372526)

With the above, you should be able to straighten out the problems if there are any. If it is in the exceptions already for mcafee, give it full access. If that doesnt work, try reducing the level of security a notch and try again. Unfortunately, I don't have the program on my machine to be very descriptive, hopefully the stuff I posted can help atleast.

What are you using for a firewall? What about routers on your network? In truth, no configuration of a router is necessary to play games unless you host, but sometimes a bad setting can make them angry, so it would be helpful. Also, try reinstalling the .NET 2.0 and the MySQL that are on the Caesar 4 disk... just autoplay the disk and the options will be in the menu... if it asks, just use the repair options. See if that helps.

The Firewall is SygatePF.... standard and... errr... cheap so to say ;)
The routerFW is set to let C4 pass through thats all i 'configured' in the routersetup... not necessary but maybe it helps, don't know....
The reinstall-thing: i did reinstall everything, i tried it with repair and complete delete and reinstall. I tried it for the main game for NET and for mysql....
Even with a shut down FW and the router out (direct connect to I-Net, my girls here hated me for that, cause they can't go online for some hours... ;) ) nothing works - i am at an end i think... -.-

I have no idea who you are or what you're problem is. Please post in you're own thread. Thank you. This is about ME getting on the net. If your problem is solved by my thread then fine but if you have a problem please post your own thread.

Hi again,
I have Mcafee but I have the online version not the suite. When I right click the icon in my task bar there is no option for the firewall. So once again thats not it. I think we can solve this if we keep brainstorming. Thank you so much for the input. And Aspergillus sorry if I came off a bit rude I didn't mean it. I'm just getting a bit frustrated about this whole thing.

Thanks

Ok, are you located on a home connection, or at a school? I know a few people that have run into issues in other games while at college because of certain programs running on the school networks for security and such. If you don't have any other programs running that may block your connection, I am not totally sure what it could be if not the school thing. I'll give it some thought though.

Hello once again,
No I'm not at school. Yes i'm at home. Just a thought... I had just downloaded Microsoft's XNA Game Studio Express (Beta) and Visual C# 2005 Express Edition AND SQL Server 2005. Could it be possible that one of these is interfering with the connection?

Thanks Rickus Biggus

Bye All,
Well sadly enough for me there is no online part of this game. i wish there was for I feel that I've paid for it. I do wish I had about $10 back for this part of the game which I cannot access. People seemed interested and genuinely supportive but now I'm not even getting posts from moderators or even the members of Tilted Mill. This only makes me feel as if they were washing their hands clean of me. That may not be true...but that's how it feels. Can no one fix this problem? Not even the people who have made the game? I CAN play the singleplayer game...and I will because I find it a truly entertaining game. Although the Online portion of the game would have extended it's life...for me anyway. Now when I complete the game I'll have to think twice about spending the amount of money again on another game from Tilted Mill or the Caesar franchise, unless it's from a different developer. I do not wish to think this way but I also don't like to throw my money away either.
So everyone ENJOY the game to the fullest you can. Play online and compete against each other...Best one another. Maybe on the next go 'round I'll be able to join in. I may still pop in to see if any fixes come up, but who knows.

'Til the next one

Its a forum, so you may not always get prompt responses... I would maybe post your issue in the technical support section of the forums... there are people there dedicated to this issue that may be more keen on particular issues that this game can cause. Best of luck.
