View Full Version : My first: Glyph

This is a small scenario, not too hard but I hope also not boring. Small because of it being the first I tried and because people, including myself, suffer slow-downs because of their PC not coping too well with the bigger ones.
I had a problem with the triggers, hope someone can advise. Since there is no help file with the scenario builder, I had to do trial and error and it was not clear to me how to delete previous triggers that I doubted were correct. I wanted to clear out all of them and start over but the builder kept counting upwards as though the triggers and events that I believed deleted were still there.
So Victory might suddenly occur or raiders aplenty where I do not want them. Thanks a lot for any comments.

Have downloaded it but am waiting for my new computer to be delivered so will try it out when I get the computer.:) Am not sure about the triggers thing as my last scenario I made was last year and have forgotten a lot of what I learned. If I come across any information on how to fix it I'll pass it on.

From my limited experience with the editor, my advice in the future would be to make lots of saves at certain milestones. Such as saving the scenario with a distinctive name prior to beginning the triggers so that you can go back to that save as a worst-case scenario.
I found the world level had a few things that basically couldn't be undone unless I went back to an earlier save. I'm not sure about the triggers, other than it automatically numbers things. I think you can rename them to more distinct names though, so I'm not sure the numbering means anything. Have you looked at the tutorials posted in the editting forum here that are stickied to the beginning of the forum? They and the responses in them helped a lot. :)

Yeah the stickied editor tutorials helped me a lot. You could always download a scenario and look at how someone else has done the triggers. I know that helped me also.

Hi Lioness!
Thanks for making it. I have downloaded it, and after I finish Waset, I will play it tonight and advise.

Hi Lioness,
well, I downloaded and won within 15 seconds :), WOW quickest game I ever played
LOL,
your goal screen is set up so if trader post was inactive that you won...
that needs to be changed to active
and yes triggers automatically number, but you can rename them to whatever you like. I suggest reading through, a lot of the old posts in the editing section. Chances are any question(s) you have, have already been asked and answered. If you post a question and don't get a response, try PMing or emailing some of the people who have created previous scenarios, most likely they will try to help, they are typically a very nice group of people
I am going to manual reset somethings and see how it plays :)

I'm always around here, so if there are any editor questions, I'd be happy to answer. :)

I had already started on a second one and figured out some things that puzzled me the first time around. The icons on the world level were definitely not working properly so I did it the same way the game-makers did and it suddenly made sense. Please download this one instead of playing the previous. Would be a waste of time.
Also thanks very much, so many reactions in so little time! Will definitely check out the previous posts on the editor.

Welcome to our family, Lioness! :)
I will download & play your scenario, warts & all! Especially before you put up version 1.1. ;)
Thank you for making scenarios! :)
EDIT: I briefly loaded it & threw down a few test buildings. All resources present, but you might have some problems with Barge Landings & Shipwrights. I was shocked at the 39 villagers, but it immediately went up to 100 after the smoke cleared. ;) I've seen this before, City Name & the Starting 4 Events Prestige.
I'm COTNed out today from testing, but will give it a whirl soon!
EDIT: I guess I DID get 1.1 ;)

Hi Lioness,
I am playing on the original version. I went through two seasons.
Things are coming together, but you started in Planting season, so I had no food the first harvest (or almost none), so things went to pot pretty quickly. :)
I did not get the instantaneous win that Karter got, but presumably that is because I didn't change anything on the world map. I intend to play it through this way.
I think you've got an interesting world map there. I am having to plan my prestige to achieve world map domination, rather than food. Nicely done. :)
Will let you know more tomorrow.

Thanks again for your warm welcome and comments on Glyph. I suppose I've got to do something else for a couple of days now, but I will work on it some more as soon as I get a chance. I learned a lot from your comments and the tutorial. Also I went through every single thread in the editor help section and copied whatever had not been said before or had puzzled me previously into a document for myself.
I think that this way, I was able to solve all the problems I had on this second scenario, Hotep, except for one. I cannot make the coastline take any bargelandings, although I have found out, by sampling the terrain which will take bargelandings in the "official" scenario's, that the bargelanding will only sit exactly on the border between -1 and 0 heighth and the part that is 0 cannot consist of flood plain. Obviously there should be no resource-sprites present. I have read elsewhere about someone having a problem with a spot where the bargelanding-structure assumed the correct color, pretended to like it in other words, and would not sit there after being clicked. It simply will not stick. In that case, it was suggested that maybe they had not installed the patch, but I have the European version so I should not need it. Is there a kind knowledgeable person willing and able to help? I could set all the world sites to "land" but I am childish enough to be a bit put off when I see a poor little donkey dragging an obelisk about or a block of limestone.
I have played it through to the end, testing every single site, once, to find what went wrong. After that I used all the pointers in the editorial section but I can still not be certain that the raiders will work the way I planned it. I think so, though. After the fort is conquered, the raider camp and raider supply camp should become visible and start spawning raiders. Of course until that time, the fort is supposed to spawn raiders otherwise people might not attack it.
Looking forward to any comments again

Well, Lioness, here's my report on Glyph ~ I loved it! :)
Your Grand Obelisks are worth waaay too much! I shut down the Basalt statue blank import sites IMMEDIATELY, cuz I was overrun with 600 & 600 of each very quickly. ;) Your opening/upkeep requirements for all WM sites were too easy, except for the prestige requirements that I really loved!
The Nile worked amazingly well with no problems at all. The dark brown areas were actually covered with water & definitely covered during high floods. I have imaged my city & all the one of each I transported across the Nile to build (one limestone block at a time! :D ). One of each Dedicated Temple & statue & even a Warship.
You will see the Pharaoh Death hit I got with about 1006 Prestige (He was buried in a Small Mastaba. :D )
World Map is Complete. I took out the Raider Camp last, cuz he still hadn't sent any Raiders at me & got tired of waiting. However, it's World Map display didn't have the Raider icon (I think I have seen scenarios w/o it that still sent Raiders). No Grand Obelisk earned for that one. No Win Screen either, but I don't need one. Win Screens are just a waypoint in the way I continue play.
My Lab on Normal of Failed Flood worked out as expected & Jim will be happy. Fields only worth 12-8-4.
Thank You, Lioness! I also see, but haven't read yet a NEW scenario! Very Kewl :)
EDIT: One more thing. You will notice in my image that all your preexisting buildings are still there. However, I had to turn Jewelry Shop & three Farmers with blocked doors.
With your newest, Hotep, two of your shops have blocked doors also & will need to be turned as I play it. I had no problems placing Barge Landings to the south of your new scenario. Lots of places there. Can't wait to play it.

Lioness, if Hotep is a different scenario, you should start a new thread with it in it so people can find it on its own. :)
Just a general comment on the raider icon on the world level. The icon shows up if a box ("Spawn Raiders") is checked when the site is created in the editor in the world level. The icon is only to let the player know that is where the raiders are coming from. Checking the box and having the icon show doesn't generate the raiders. Raiders have to be generated separately in the trigger section. So, it is possible to have a site with the icon that doesn't generate raiders or a site with no icon that does generate raiders.

Hi, Lioness!
I played through this one, and boy there are a lot of imports! :)
I did get the win screen, but I didn't know it until I went to check the scenario instructions.
Also, I can't attack the raiders, despite having 12 spearmen, 12 archers, and 12 charioteers in my city. I don't get the option to attack them.
Other than that, I am all done. Very cramped, and interesting! I found I needed many less nobles than normal to manage with the scarcity of villagers.
Also, this taught me something. Sometimes 12 nobles aren't necessary. I had a massive surplus of food here with only 6. Of course, there were no food costs on the world map, but still, I found that I had about 2900 food in the harvest each year, with only about 1000 needed for the government workers. And there were quite a bit. I had 3 bakers, 20 brickmakers, 8 bricklayers, 2 stone cutters, 10 papyrus makers, 2 overseers, 11 laborers, 1 commander, 12 soldiers, 5 priests, and 2 scribes.
You taught me that sometimes the extra nobles are more trouble than they are worth! Thanks for that! :)

Oh, there it IS!
PS ~ I agree with, Jim, Lioness. Open a new thread for Hotep! :)

I have worked it over and played it out a couple of times. Everything works except the Victory Screen don't pop up, you have to press the eye to see it. Oh well, some day I will figure it out.

regrettably, I think your scenario may be broken :( :(
if you will notice, that upon opening your map and not even doing anything, that clicking on the information screen, will bring up a win screen.
I have tried deleting triggers, goals, re-inputting them and am unable to get it to respond correctly.
On occasion, I also had maps that I first started and would not function properly. I think it has something to do with the very first trigger input with the editor.
It is as though it has a blank trigger at the very beginning, that doesnt show anywhere, but does indeed exist. I think it may have to do with the auto-numbering. In typical programming variables usually start at 0
ie;
input 1 = variable 0
input 2 = variable 1
input 3 = variable 2, etc
but when they get deleted or reassigned (on occasion) the editor starts showing at
input 2 = variable 1 instead of variable 0, if that makes sense
the editor is very lacking in this area and great care must be taken when creating or editing triggers.
I found that I never must delete my very first trigger created. I could change it or leave set to do nothing, but, I never delete it
Again, I maybe wrong, but I had several maps I had to abandon due to this glitche, or maybe it is something else I am / was doing.

Thanks, Karter! I will take care to do the same next time.
It does make sense, actually. I have only just begun learning about computers but in several instances I felt the scenario builder assumes the person using it thinks like a programmer.
Luckily a lot of people enjoy playing a scenario with or without the win screen and everything else about it works.
I don't think it is worth the hassle to load this world map into a brand new scenario and do the world level from scratch. Rather I will now make a new one again. Live and learn is the ticket.:D
