Does anyone have any ideas on how to create a cataract?

After playing around at modding existing scenarios, I decided to try my hand at making one from scratch. I looked around on the internet for an ancient Egyptian site that had some historical significance (as well as a map I could use as a reference,) and finally settled on Swenet (now known as Aswan.)

So far, the project is going well...I have a story board for the events and triggers, a plan for the world map, yadda-yadda. The one thing I can't quite get is geographic accuracy - Swenet was located below the first cataract of the Nile. The editor is not being very cooperative in making an actual waterfall, and so far the best I can do is a lower elevation in the middle of cliffs with the "light desert" terrain colored blue.

So, I dug through the forums to see if I could find some assistance. Darkdragoness posted the same question a few weeks back, but I never saw any reply, nor any other threads about waterfalls.

I read somewhere that someone created a waterfall... one of the threads in the user created forum, I believe. How could you accomplish that? I tried for awhile, but I wasn't getting far. :p Any thoughts?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to create a cataract? Any suggestion would be welcome (well, any suggestion other than to pick a different site. :p )

I had your same thoughts, as to creating a waterfall.....

and in my playing around...I was unable to come up with a good solution
after several attempts, I abandoned the idea..but didn't explore all possible
ways

Any suggestion would be welcome (well, any suggestion other than to pick a different site. :p ) Unfortunately, the game only allows one water elevation at a time. My only suggestion for the cataracts would be to use the various rocks under the unit section of the editor to simulate the appearance of the cataracts. You could raise sections of the land up in the center of the river to the surface of maybe just below the surface in order to place rocks there. I can't really see a way to get the white water effect though.

June '05 is hardly a few weeks ago. ;) :) Here's a link (http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5066)to a thread where there's brief mention of a waterfall and general terms of how they did it. Posts 9 and 11 are the ones you are interested in. (Using the forum search function I found it in just a few minutes. :) )

Welcome to our family, Mr. Gig! :)

Here are some examples of the best I've seen in COTN. NumakNatut (http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5600) was trying to emulate waterfalls & rapids.

Karter the Magician™ could probably put in a fake river & real waterfalls with moving water. :D

Ah, you are strong in the way of search-fu! I am no match! :D

I tried drawing the river at -8, then -16, then -24, then -40, and while it does make a nice effect it's no waterfall. However, your rocks idea coupled with the link you provided might just be the way to go. I really appreciate the help.

As Wodinoneeye pointed out:
There probably arent any 'waterfalls' with 500 miles of all of egypt, but the cateracts (rapids) are effectively the same thing (just not vertical).

After checking Wikipedia for "Cataracts of the Nile" and GoogleEarth for the Aswan region, I think a wide section of river punctuated with rock formations would be more geographically accurate. Again, I apprecite everyone's help, and hope to have a scenario available for download very, very soon!
