View Full Version : I think I'm developing a split personality over SCS

I've been waiting a long time to make up my mind over SCS, as someone who has been playing the simcity games for over 10 years. With each piece of new info I read about the game the further I get from coming to a decision.

I think like most old school fans, when I first heard that their removing alot of the standard features (power, water, transportation, etc) I thought to myself that their dumbing down the game. But then I realized something, even though I've been playing simcity games all this time, I've never really master or gotten to a point that I can say that I've "beaten" a Simcity game.

The big arguement for me is how the game is more focused on social values and how the city will grow and change depending on them. At first I thought to myself " that's horrible, now all I'm going to do is put some buildings down and watch everything grow." But then I think I had an epiphany , isn't that what I like to do in sandbox sim type games?

So now I've reached a creative impass and I really don't know if I'm going to get SCS or not. Is anyone else still in the middle over SCS at this point?

like i said in other threads, it isn't a simcity game but it might actually be a really good society builder like other tilted mill games, caesar 4 and children of the nile.

I'm still of two minds about SC:S as well. I need a better idea of gameplay, the demo would help. I might preorder it anyway just for kicks. CU won't be out for a LONG time to come, and I enjoyed my $20 Caesar IV well enough. Call it $70 for two games worth about $35. I think I can do the write-off on SC:S with that in mind.

I'm not confused but I'm not going to pain everyone by restating my position.

From the beginning I had an idea how it was going to play and so far everything I've seen hasn't been a surprise. That said, I think there is potential in Societies. When I model the game in my head, I see possibilities and I think this will be a way better game than Ceasar (I'm playing 3 atm). It's why I lurk here following Societies' progress. But I think the game won't really shine until after the modders get their hands on it just like Simcity 4.

Hopefully more transit options can be modded in. I'm also hoping regional play will come in an expansion pack with land annexing and multiple cities per region with multiple accounts for family play on the same region. Working air and seaports would be great too.

I think SC:S is a world away from Caesar 3 in terms of a city-builder. To get a better idea of how the game might play out, try Children of the Nile or Caesar 4, which, aside from the graphical similarities, also feature a 'pull' game mechanic, where citizens will seek resources etc for themselves, as opposed to the 'push' mechanic of the resources finding their way to the citizen a la Caesar 3 (and Zeus, Pharaoh etc)

I haven't been this excited about SimCity since SC2k. SC3k and SC4 were a bit disappointing. I like the new concepts, but as intriguing as the new system as and as nice as the graphics are, I'd very much like to see some new transit options and airports and seaports. ;)
