I have just started on the online games and this map is my first. The scenario had population in brackets beside it but no mention of the significance of that. The targets for the map were reached after 11 years 9.5 months but there was no target reached screen appearing, does this mean that when doing the online games this doesn't happen? I also noted that I was ranked 5th but the person who won took 19 years to complete and has the bigger population, although the scenario asked for only 5000 with no mention of more needed or wanted. Are you meant to continue to play to build up population after you achieve your goals, and if so for how long. I don't really understand what you are meant to be achieving here and would be gratefull if someone could explain it to me for this and future chalenges.

Population contest are just that, you need to shoot for the highest population in order to win. Don't worry about the victory screen in the population contest, just keep adding people to your city for a victory. Don't even worry about achieving the other ratings or how many years go by. Keep spamming the people until you win.:D
The other contests are a bit different, but population contests are a bit easy imo. Here is one of mine from the past so you get the idea.

Thanks for your reply but if I understand you correctly the game goals are irrelevent, so there would be no need for patricians with services to make my prosperity level and no need to put in so much culture venues only houses for population which would be plebs and just enough equites to service them. If that is the case why is there a win goal at all, it doesn't make sense to me, the scenario just isn't explained that way when you start up. Had I known this I would have saved lots of time and money for importing luxury goods that were not needed and building up the game for the winning levels. So do I now delete my patricians to free up space and their services and build more houses instead.

The goal for the population contest is total number of population. The other ratings and game goals are irrelevant in the population contest. If I were you, I would keep the patricians since they bring in property tax income. You will need this income once your population swells up to 20 or 30k. The trade routes cannot bring in enough income to pay the workers when the city becomes huge so build a patrician population as well.
The "High Score" contest deals more with the total ratings and large patrician populations help with the total "High Score". Maybe that is more your cup of tea.
