View Full Version : Roads & intersections

Ok, it's easy to lay down roads. But I'm confused by two things:

1 - sometimes I try to place a road so it'll connect to another section of road, and the game refuses to allow it. It'll place the road several 'microtiles' away (not a full 'square') instead, as if there's a hidden obstacle in the way. Most often this seems to occur if I try to connect new road to an existing corner that has one of those automatically 'wrapped/placed' little white stone benches on the corner sidewalk. So the question is - are there actually some limitations to where you can 'connect' new road tiles?

2 - One help-message/alert told me that my Sims "seemed to be meandering around and going nowhere" and mentioned either building more roads/checking intersections or building more mass-transist options. So ... do multiple intersections create Sim-confusion in terms of walker-decision-pathfinding?

LadyCrimson, I'm not totally sure I understand exactly what you are saying, but I also had a problem last night.

Apparently we cannot connect roads to intersections unless they exactly match up with the intersection. The game will create a weird loop to the other road instead (from a different direction) & I was unable to undo button it. I had to bulldose it (several times).

In this image, my road network was basically rectangular & I added those better houses in the lower section. The light green house extended a bit to the right & prevented the new road to perfectly line up with the intersection. So, I had to make the new lower road loop bigger than I wanted. Then I filled in the space with two new homes on the lower right.

So it looks like either we connect to intersections exactly, or we have to connect a bit away from the intersection.

Of course, this is initial observation only with limited gameplay.

Sometimes I can't place a road inbetween two buildings (below, pic on the right), which I assumed was for the same reason - the tiles not lining up just-so - which sounds similar to what you're describing.

My other 'problem' (below, the pic on the left) is different, I think. Not sure if the picture helps, but if I put the green square right by the road corner and click, it places the road tile elsewhere. But not always ...

Hmmm, interesting. Perhaps it is easier to do on pause?

Left image ~ It looks like you might have moved the cusor a bit to the left while placing & it caused a sidewise road instead of up & down? I have already successfully attached roads to rounded corners, so it is possible.

Right image ~ I believe you need to start your road over the existing road & draw it out, instead of just starting at the previous road edge? This road should definitely be possible.

In my image, I added the middle road in the left part after the much larger rectangle road was made (I deleted one building to do this), so adding roads in the middle where the space is limited by other buildings IS possible.

Placing roads in SCS is a bit tricky at times. We just need to learn the rules & weirdnesses ;)

Nope. :(
I did notice, however, that the places it would do this last night, when I reloaded the game this morning, suddenly I could place them. So it appears to be an intermittment bug I have regarding roads and buildings, I don't know?

Tried that too - didn't work.
You don't need to start on an existing tile - the game will add the extra crossover 'green tile' as when it thinks/builds the intersection tile.

Well, LadyCrimson, I just got back from my tutorial city on Continue Play with your thread in mind.

I could not complete this road straight into the old road on the right & it is probably due to it being too close to a corner & a corner is just like an intersection. I then extended a new road from the corner & that changed the corner into an intersection. I still could not complete the road.

What the game tried to do was create a loop down from where this one ended & connect to the bottom of the corner/intersection. Didn't want THAT!

So I nuked the road & those houses along it & built the road a bit lower so that it intersected with the intersection exactly.

No other problems were noted & yes, I had to start on top of the old road at times & not next to the edge of the old road.

My conclusion is that we need to stay away from corners & intersections a bit, or make the road exactly run into the old corner/intersection.

Disclaimer ~ I have not patched yet. Seeing what the vanilla game is like for a few days.

Ok, since my last post, I reloaded the game made these roads (full game ~ no tutorial). It looks like we can do quite a bit with SCS roads, but it can be very tricky. All these roads, plus a bunch of deletions took about 5+ minutes.

Sometimes, you have to do something & cut back after you make the first one. Also, be very careful when you release the road tool, keeping in mind that the game will make everything that shows in the overlay, even some really weird stuff (loops). Just keep the button pressed & back up to the preexisting road so that nothing gets built.

The two tiny ovals on the left could not get anything attached to them except at the curve & not the middle. Top left was the smallest oval that could have a mid-intersection.

Much better than I expected. We can do a LOT! :)

Holding down CNTL when using the deletion tool, only deletes roads.

(Because there is a true 3d, full fledged traffic model with the roads, the intersections have to meet specific critera, which is why they have to line up. Caesar, and Cotn, everything could just mill about and go around eachother- not the case here.)
