; Hi everybody
I've tried to install simcity societies on my new laptop. But when it comes to "direct x installation", the installation just freezes. my laptop already has directx 10 installed. Any idea about that .
thanks
PS : Vista is the biggest piece of j**k I've ever seen. Wish I had a XP installation disk from my old PC...

dude vista works just fine it actually runs games almost better than xp does now and you cant install xp over vista unless if you ahve 2 hard drives except you would need xp installed 1st then vista on the 2nd hard drive. I like vista more than i do xp now and for scs it says it is not supported on laptops.

Well, up to now, my laptop with vista is waaaayy slower than my old XP PC...
Anyway, I'll have to go with vista for now. Can anyone tell me how to go over that directx-installation-freeze problem ?

EA/TM has a post call Vista and stability on the SCS website under tech support. Please post if it helps. I'm buying a laptop tomorrow and want to know if it works before i buy the game. EDIT: um, actually there's a Vista support post just two post up. Look up! That might help. I don't know.

I've seen the vista posts. But my problem (for now) is not a game stability issue. It's the installation that won't work. When the installation program looks for directX, it just does nothing. It freezes. But the computer still runs, I can do other things on it.
Ps It seems, the problem is not only with SCS. I installed bitdefender, it did the same just before the end, but the installation was nonetheless succesfull. When I do a dxdiag, it doesn't finish it. Same freeze as with the game installation.

Ok I don't really know what I did, but now I can do a complete dxdiag. I also installed simciy4 without any problem. But still a problem with SCS. First it takes ages, second, after about an hour it passed the directX stage, but then after more than an hour the installation is still at the beginning...

I did a few more tests, trying to go around the directx installation. I've discovered the dvd could be linked to the problem. When I explore it instead of running it's very slow, gets slower, and sometimes writes "program not responding" for a while before starting again. But the dvd is clean, no scratch. Besides I have no problem whatsoever with in on my old PC. Now, I really don't know what to do anymore, or wher the problem could be (driver, dvd, dvdplayer,...)

SCS works just fine on the old PC?

Yes it does, except I can't run it with high settings. In fact when the city begins to grow, I have to turn all settings to minimum.

That should rule out the disc then, do you have any other problems loading software onto the laptop?

anyone has an idea ? I partly bought this computer for this game :(
I tried, instead of installing from the dvd, to copy the entire directory from my old PC to the new one, (without much hope) and as expected it failed (some files can't be copied...) Has anyone any idea on how to sort this out ?

You should probably bite the bullet and talk with a Microsoft tech, which will cost you some money. I had to do it once myself on Christmas eve about 5-6 years ago. I spent 4 hours on the phone with him and got my problem fixed. It cost me $35 at the time.
Other than that try some of the free techsupport forums like techguys.org, computerhope.com or similar sites.

I wonder if it would be possible to take an inter dvdplayer from my old pc and link it as an extern one on my laptop to see if it works

according to my latest research, the protection should be the cause... Anyway to do anythig ? Else I'll have to download an illegal iso from the net although I have a perfectly working dvd... :/

In case someone has the same same problem, I downloaded the game and installed it froma that downloaded version. Now I put my cd to start the game and it runs just fine. No CTD or freeze so fare

That sounds like copy protection.
