Is the Steam version of Alexandria compatible with the boxed version of CoTN, or do you need the Steam version of the game?

I downloaded the Steam version last night(and have the boxed game) and it plays fine. Am not sure if it logs on to Steam everytime I play or not? It takes a long to load the game from clicking my CoTN icon on my desktop. I seem to have to click several times to get it started...

I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I haven't been able to get Alexandria on Steam to play today. Is anyone else having this problem?
