So I've been dismissing all the visitors that come into my town to get a higher turnover, to get what I want.

And it seems like if you dump everyone at once, you get back the same spread of visitors every time.

In particular I'm looking for multiple acolytes so I can have someone praying and researching at the same time. But I can't seem to get them to show up.

Except after my only light priest died. The next person to come into town was a light priest.

Are their appearances just really rare or will the game only send you singles of certain villagers?

Some followers are unique. =)

You can only have one Acolyte in your town at the same time. You can upgrade them into a Light or Dark Priest. Depending upon which one you choose you may also hire either a High Priest or a Necromancer.

When reading the manual (before deciding to buy the game) I had hoped for true unique followers. Like wandering heroes, bringing rare unique buildings for your town.
It makes the game play more generic and predictable to avoid truly unique elements like that. It need not happen very often, perhaps once per three long games (as to not removing the magic of it happening).
Also generally random events are exciting, and some other quests than begetting monies or foods would be appreciated.
