It is possible to build two (or more) factories of the same kind. Is that useful? I intend to experiment with two brickworks at a time.
I could assign 22 Workers to brick building, spending 40 bricks altogether (two level 2 brickworks.) Building a level 3 brickworks cost 10+10+45(as I recall) = 65 bricks, allowing to spend 19 workers for brick building. Mmmh a small advantage.
Perhaps it would be better for inexperienced new players, to allow only one building of a kind in the first settlement.

I've found that VERY useful... and how would TM be able to differentiate between two facotires of one kind in a new city and two factories of one kind in hte same players second city?

You have to make choices: building sites are limited, so you need to choose how you want to orient your city, what you want to produce, what to sell and what to buy.
