It would be great if this could have a chat/shout box window
along with an address book (someone else suggested)
that way you could get real time feed back from other online players
:)
this is a nice (very basic basic basic first step), cant wait to have it turn into a realtime MMO

Yes, I agree also. We need to to have some in-game means of letting other players know that we have a need for an item that is not being traded, etc.
Example, some of us can't upgrade a building level without an item like kohl, which is not currently available for trade by any city, etc.
It doesn't have to be big or fancy just a simple box that lets players post comments. (Might be good to have an abuse function on all posted comments too.)
I could be on the bottom of the game screen somewhere.

We used to have advertising and request threads in the alpha. It was fun, but I think with already over 800 players all these messages will soon get annoying.
If you want to limit it to your trading partners, you can mail them directly (though an adress book would be nice).
And if you need kohl, why not drop a message to your nearest kohl trader?

There's also a problem in that market conditions vary widely - you cite a lack of Kohl. In my neck of the woods, there's quite a lot of it on the market. So that would require a sort of "regional chat box." But how big would the region be? Probably there would have to be several for different ranges; that would get excessively complex.

I'm with you, Sakasiru. While the idea sounds great, it will turn into a chat room requiring moderation. More work for Reed.
If implimented, please have a total off button, TM, with no residue.

In Alpha, I had a suggestion like this to be implemented in the local temple. So you post something there to the local community.
Well, in Beta it's different, because all the people in the same nome will probably need the same goods, essentially. So what about a shour box (or wall to post on) located in the market? You can see the shouts as far as you can see normal offers, or maybe just one nome further...

Perhaps there could be a PM function added to the player profile. That way you could send a player a request to trade for his export item directly.
Example, on the Nome map, click on a city, then the player's name, then on his profile screen there could be a small box where such requests or other communications could be posted.

That exists already: just click the small scroll icon next to the players name.

Ok, I didn't know that. I've only been playing for two days and haven't found out all the little features yet.
Is there some way to setup a trade with a specific city so that only that city can buy what I have to sell and I can buy what they have?

If you both have ships, you can negotiate via messages and then send as much as you see fit.

No, not yet at least.

Actually, doesn't only the "other" need a ship? We can negotiate credit via scrolls & their first shipment would be cedar.
We can totally remove the Market from the game, no?
<which is my point>

Yes, but not exactly how you put it. Private trading networks. Alliances.

I donīt see your point. I made a few deals at the market, and I made a few "pirate deals", as you put it. (BTW, in Alpha, I called it black market ;) )
I mailed with someone with cedar, and was able to trade some henna for my first ship. Then I found someone I can trade oil with and even was able to get enough cedar for*him* from my previous dealer. Now we can exchange our wares and make both perfume.
I found some more pharaohs who will trade oil for henna, one with kohl for henna, one who sells me sculptures for perfume... All without sitting at the market and hoping some items show up for ridiculous prices while piling up bread in hope I get them fast enough. All it cost me were a few kind words on virtual papyri to names I know as well as to complete strangers.
I donīt think anyone would deny you a reasonable request. Worst that can happen is getting no answer (Iīm looking at you, TomNobles! ). Well, there are plenty of other pharaohs out there ;)

Well, the first real advantage to a chat/shout window is long threads like this would be reduced
I am thinking much along the lines of World of Warcraft chat where you have different channels
a nome channel for others in your same area
a trade channel for goods, etc
and whisper function where you can chat directly to someone and noone else can see
as it is, if you send someone a message they may longer be playing the game
lets face it...it is almost easier to do trade within this forum than it is in the game IMHO

OPEC! Wait and see when the numerous oil traders even the playing field. LOL :D Please check your private messages.
You know you can click on a city name in any nome, select and send a message to the Pharaoh there. Make a deal, make friends!! Pity the pharaoh who does not return the agreed on terms. Word will travel up and down the Nile about a Pharaoh's unfair trading.

A lot of you don't, even though I have claerly explained it all day.

Just what I posted, no? You both didn't need a ship. Only the other who sent you cedar? Then you built your ship & were off to the Black Market (Dat works too!)
All without sitting at the market and hoping some items show up for ridiculous prices while piling up bread in hope I get them fast enough.
This is exactly my point. Why is there a Free Market, when you all don't use it any longer. How can the Free Market be fixed so that you all experienced players go back to using it? You all have removed it from the game.
The Market System is broken if we all eventually go Private Market & stop using the Free Market. I thought this was a beta. Improving the game, instead of "how to use exploits".

None of this is the point, but you all keep stressing it.

The easiest way to fix the market is to turn all nomes for all to see what all cities have to sell not just the few around your city.

that is extreme imo .. .maybe the starting market should be able to see 1 space further on each side....

More like forced to stop using.
I could buy gold for 20 & emeralds for 40.
Wonder what price my jewelry would be?
Hmmm.....20 + 40 = 60 + profit...Hmmmmm
Want to buy some?

Cuz TM gave you an exploit. You come at this from a position of emerald power, Tomnobles. Your opinion is a tad skewed.
I could buy gold for 20 & emeralds for 40.
Gold is only 10 on the market & the emeralds I saw were not 40. Try truth with your arguments. Let's be real.

Look, a few worlds ago, we had this same argument, with me standing in your shoes. Except the private market deals were made over the steam chatroom at times I wasnīt online.
Appearently, the developpers think this private market as a part of the game, or they wouldnīt have encouraged it through making us able to send scrolls to everyone and sending ships relatively cheap and fast (compared to earlier builds). As you state, the point is that everyone is able to join the private market. Nobody is left out except those who donīt want to trade via private market. And if those are so many, they should be able to set up a going open market without the private dealers.
So, the needs and wants of all are thought of. Itīs just that the private market right now is going faster than the open, but thats neither a problem nor something that will persist. The open market needs time to mature as it has before, but it will soon. Meanwhile, let those that want to make their private deals. They take nothing away from you; just think of it as deals going on in nomes far away from you.

Private deals take away from everyone except the ones making the deals. When everyone is new and all need the same things, if everyone posted some of their cities resourses (at reasonable prices), everyone would have a chance to let their city grow.

Oh, for crying out...
Everyone can make those deals! There are soooo many players out there! Why donīt you just try to find one that has the thing you want? The ressources are distributed fairly even, so donīt tell me someone is taking away something from everyone.
I bet Tomnobles is currently at his very limit producing emeralds for everyone that mails him, yet everyone is bashing HIM instead of those sitting on emeralds producing nothing at all or putting up small amounts at ridiculous prices. Why donīt you blame THEM for ruining the market?

I say tax it...
5 per active ship?
you have to feed your crew right?
this money can then be distributed to lover lvl cities especially noobies who need a little help getting started
there... now it helps people right?

Haha, socialist egypt.
So, full disclosure, I've been doing mostly private trading. I still can't get the goods I would need on my market. My own natural resource is being flooded on my market. Now, that said, I don't understand why people who need goods don't just reach out to someone who has them and ask to trade? When I realized I couldn't get what I needed from the market, I sent out some scrolls and found some people to trade with. Cedar isn't my natural resource, but I found a nice cedar owner who was willing to advance me enough to build a ship. -Slytech

Hey.... I dont know if anyone already posted anything like this ( i kinda skipped the last few posts) but what about "My Requests" and "Requested Goods" links in the market alongside the "Current Listings | My Listings | My Sales".
Here you could input what you need and how much you are willing to pay for it, or check other people's requests to see whether you have anything they are searching for. Through this, private sales could be organised.
I realise that this is somewhat similar to the current market system, though it would add another element to trade. Currently the system seems focused on producers, and not so much on the "buyer".
