It will help the economy at lot if the vacant cities were removed and new players assigned to existing nomes instead of lengthening the Nile. It's too long already!

Reed already said that cities that have not been logged into for a week will be destroyed. I'd imagine that if there are less than 5 on that side of the Nile in that nome as a result, that someone new will get settled there.

now my problem is that my city will likely be removed when I cannot log on for for weeks on end (yes I said WHEN not if)
I wish there was a way to set a "vacation mode" so the game gives you much longer before deleting your city :(

Reed said long ago that there is going to added a 'vacation' tab or similar.

Sounds like a new server is due, but I guess they can't make the new servers for when the Nile gets long. Usually it's a result of a server working at overcapacity, right?. Couldn't they make pararel nomes, sure not exactly correct having NileS next to each other.
How about incorporating account watchers, tribalwars has one of those systems. You can give someone in your tribe ( or a friend ) tha ability to temporarily log in on your account for a couple of days and watch over it keeping it active!

I'm thinking something like what the Nile DOES have, which is tributaries at the mouth. Sounds too complex to get right, though. You'd need a new formula for travel times, city seeding, and the graphical navigation would need an overhaul. But, it would be way more interesting... in some cases, camel caravans might be faster than ships!

and if we started at Victoria Falls, then we'd only have to grow in one direction! :D
Where the suckage enters the equation is if you're up one fork, and the fellow you want to trade with is up another fork. Don't think that camels can walk in marsh too well. ;)

/me thinks about the White and Blue Nile
you know I read that there were 6 tributaries in ancient times but all but these two dried up or were clogged with silt ect
and lets not forget the delta and oasis

Well, that's were the bridges (http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20046) come in. :D

Hasn't happened yet! I still have 4 abandoned cities in my nome.

I think the idea posted elsewhere about having cities inland to be accessed only with camels is good, as long as we can build a camel caravan so direct trade is possible.

I know for sure that I have only been here for 9 days and the length of the nile/abandoned city issue has only cropped up in the last few.
I think I read that it's only been beta 2 or 3 days before I came in but don't quote me on that, so at most beta has only been 14 days.
Purely speculative I would guess that it would require a database trawl to determine percentages of cities inactive for last 14/13/12/11 days, how many of those are level 1, how many of those have (n) buildings done etc as the last thing you want your Dev's to do even in a beta is blitz someone who started is close to level 2 palace and then had to go out of town for a week.
Reed is also working on a "Away from game" flag, which he might want to implement before getting violent with the blitz gun.

Once people leave your nome, if they were on the same side of the river (same raw material), isn't that a boost for you ? e.g. now you have fewer competitors.
Also, if new people join your nome they may need some help to get started. Yet at the same time they will be competitors.
If wonder if there will be more features for 'team trading' or temple-like things where one nome can pit itself against another.

I'm sort of hoping it will be soon. On one side of a nome near me, all 5 oil cities are dead, haven't seen any action from over there.
Of course it makes me want to make my 2nd city oil, except I'm not that close to doing it yet, only palace level 4 now.

As I've posted elsewhere I don't think it would be a very good idea to put new players in amongst established towns. The new players would be at a very strong disadvantage competing for trade against established towns. By all means the inactive ones should be rubbed out though.
Maybe if a half-nome has no working towns, they could repopulate it but it's still a different playing field to new players going to new nomes.
The all-dead half nomes would seem like ideal places for expansions.

If the city is dead, they are no competitioners in the first place. ;)

It´s up to you if you help them or try to ruin them. I´m not sure if you can hinder them much, though. I guess we´ll have to see how these things turn out.
On the other hand, remember the whining at the start when the market wasn´t populated? The new residents will have the advantage to begin with a maturend market, so maybe it´s not that hard for them.
