IMHO, I feel the best thing this game has done is bring the TM fan base into direct contact with each other. I have met some of the nicest people trading and chatting with them. The personal interaction has made it alot of fun. Some of the scrolls I have received are very creative making it feel like I am dealing with a pharaoh from ancient Egypt. creating a small piece of role playing.
This interaction has created some friendships on both a personal and business level. The fact that your success depends on the trade system and market system is and interesting twist. the trade has taken what could have been a solely single player game and turn it into a cooperative adventure.
An ingame chat system would facilitate this comradeship. I feel that this is what would help separate Nile online from other games bringing a fellowship to it that is lacking in other games.
I believe that Nile online has and will continue to strengthen TM's fan base.

I enjoy it for the same reasons.
As for the in-game chat, if it were between two people then perhaps... if it were chat channels, I'd not care for it. I've experienced too many MMORPGS to know just how that can ruin any immersions / atmosphere.
I'm quite happy with scrolls for now. After all, the ancient Egyptians didn't have 'phones. :P

I really agree, and an ingame chat window would be really great. Scrolls are like SMS, takes you an hour to figure out what would only take 2 mins in real time :)

Umm, real time where? In 2008 or ancient Egypt? :P

I wouldn't want chat channels either, or I don't really know what I would feel about that. But I would like to be able to chat directly to someone, but maby only one on one

real time in ancient egypt. And one can't complain that it is strange to be able to chat with people instantaniously because, first of all we already have teleporting boats. Secondly, we have teleporting scrolls

I agree that and open chat could be a problem. I had in mind a one on one type chat.

I'd be all for a one-on-one chat, possibly through the scroll system, as an extension of the new (and utterly useful!) icon system, so that maybe when I pop open that new scroll from my pharoah, it can tell me:
Pharoah Joe Blow (City A, City B) (Online) writes:
Clicking on City A or City B would (ideally, since there's nothing else you can possibly do at the moment from clicking on it...) open a Direct Trade window with them, so you can ship goods (maybe even with a tooltip displaying how long it would be to ship something to there rather than having to see which one's closest.) and clicking on their name could send a "Pharoah Dreadmime would like to speak with you. Accept Y/N?" and initiate a sort of one-on-one direct chat. I sometimes feel like some crazed news-starved Pharoah out here in the boonies when i'm discussing a trade with someone via trades to see that 5 minutes have gone by and I haven't gotten a response...
I'd break my F5 button if this game didn't auto-refresh for me. lol.
As to what I like most about this game? I think not only that it's just as easily played not talking to anyone really (In that eventually, you can find just about everything on the Market and never say a word to anyone.) as it is with deeply involved trading and relationships built with various pharoahs even from far away. (My longest trade to date has been 22 hours. lol. ) That and well, I love to see all the creative suggestions by various players, like this one-on-one chat, only to see that a few days later, a new update comes out and there's that feature fully implemented. I can't tell you how nice it is, in this day and age, to see a Development team actually listen to their fanbase. I actually came to TM (even though i'd played CotN and Caesar) from Simcity Societies, looking for help when EA didn't wanna provide it, and loved the amount of Developer interaction with the fanbase on things they could. Even though I don't really "play" SCS anymore (simply too buggy still for me sadly, and I refuse to continue to support EA on a buggy product that never got fixed.) I kept checking back, to find this literal Gem of a Game here. I've been promoting it everywhere I visit. :p

I agree wholeheartedly, PhilL. My fear is that MILTARY will be implimented soon and all this building and interchange utopia will cease. I think a poll will indicate many players feel the same..though probably just as many players are salivating to hack and slash on their neighbors.
At least it is fun for now.. :p

It was already stated that the military will be used for "King of the Hill" scenarios, not attacking your neighbours. They said that if you don't want to join in, you don't have to. :)

Things I like about Nile Online:
* It's a city builder (no violence, yet)
* I don't need to invest 4 hours at a time to get anywhere, simply 10 minutes here and there suffice
* People are really nice to interact with, haven't had a bad experience yet, except for some unanswered scrolls (but now I can tell if those people were ever online again).
* It's addictive, but I really don't know why. I just want to get to the next upgrade or expansion, but I don't know why. Still I just like building stuff, so maybe that's it.
* I like the engagement on the forums, from both the user base and the developers (well, team Reed ;) ) .
* (Edit, as I forgot this one) I love the fact that Nile is a lightweight browser game. I can play on any computer, from anywhere. This is a huge plus, since I can now play from my Linux machine in the den. Check progress in the morning from the Windows laptop in the kitchen, or even make some trade deals in my lunch hour at work.
So all I can say it that I'll be hooked for a while, and I'll have to carry a laptop to the family gatherings when the holiday season is upon us so that I can honor my trade agreements ;) .

What is most different about this game, as compared to other multi-player online games I have played, struck me last night as I was thinking over someone's long post while I was getting ready for bed.
In every other online MP game I have played, there was some strong benefit to my being logged in many hours, which I can be since I am retired. This garnered me the gratitude of my friends and the amnity of those who were not my friends. In this game, there is no real benefit to my being logged in so many hours. My workers bake bread and make bricks just as fast while I sleep as they do while I am logged in. Yes, it is good to be around when changes are in progress, such as right now when my work force is increasing since I expanded my palace, but for the most part I can accumulate resources without being in the game and spend them in infrequent visits between other activities.
At first I was a little dismayed, thinking how I had lost one of my biggest advantages over the younger and more aggressive players who don't have so much leisure time. Then I realized what a liberating thing that was for me. I don't ~have~ to stay glued to the screen for eight to sixteen hours a day in this game in order to avoid disappointing my friends, because nothing is lost when I don't. :D

I honestly can say I love everythng about this game. I think if it never changed from now I would keep playing it for a long time.
Trading is probably the bestest part. Market trading and private trading. The tension when you are going for that last push to get all the goods for an upgrade. The planning when you are trying to work out how many hours it will take to produce all the goods needed or should you try and sell something quickly and buy what you want.
Seriously I'd give this game as it is already 100/100. I've already introduced a few people in RL to this game and thats saying something.

I would have to agree that the social interactions are the best part of the game. I've strengthened existing friendships and made new ones though the Nile Online. I've also introduced my husband, his brother, my best friend and her husband to the game. Addicts now, the whole lot of us! :D

Yes, I love the social interaction, but that is just part of the whole. The game is very addicting & I have lost my life (and my mind). OK, more of my mind.
Management is very tough. I absolutely love this part. I can only imagine the chaos & pulling-of-hair & I only have 2 cities now.
As far as chatting? I do it all the time. Dat's what scrolls are for! :D

I like that Nile Online is an online city-builder / economic game without excessive complexity or military aspects. A game like Kapi Regnum lost me pretty quickly. :o
