For a second city is it better to stick close to you home nome or put a bit of distance between the two? I've found two sites I like one just over 30 minutes away the other six hours. For those of you that build well away from home-is it a problem?

the advantage of building close to "home" is that your ships travel between your cities quickly.. making supplying the colony easier and it tends to grow faster..
but if you build far away you expose yourself to new neighbors and trade opportunities... often the market is different and you can make a killing buying cheap goods at your capital and selling them for a profit at your colony or the other way around
but your ships will take longer to travel to and from...
new colonies don't start with a market though so you will have to build one and upgrade it.
also be sure you have extra ships because everything you used to found the city will vanish

I already found it a little irksome that my ships take 1.5 hours when I started off as, of course, it takes a while for your second city to have an exchange, ships and a market. It doesn't matter so much now as my second city has 5 ships so if I've made any mistakes with that one ship I have plenty either side with which to correct it.
I don't think I'd care for the six hour trip.
Good luck, whatever you decide.
Cheers.

a final piece of advice...
if you plan on building a city far away.. PM some of the cities nearby the location your considering and ask what the prices are for certain goods
I'm sure this information will help you decide
whatever you choose, I wish you luck.

I plan to put my next city about two hours distant from the others. Any closer and the market will be too similar and farther will make supplying a new city a little tricky.
I am always shuffling goods for upgrades between my cities. Right now I have a 36 min wait, which at times robs me of an early bedtime as I have goofed by one or two items and had to send another boat with the missing item.
Build boats.. plenty of them!

i am thinking of building my second city in my own nomes. On the other shore is what i want. Do you think the doubled temple bonus is worth it, since i have to sacrifice a possible good market position somewhere new ?

There won't be a double temple bonus. There will be a bonus in each city that has a temple. And of course the required donations are met. IMO temple bonuses are worth it.

i thought of it as doubled not as 2 times in one city but as simultaneosly in both city with only one full donation.
Thank you for answering :)

There are two pharaohs in my nome with cities on both sides of the river. It is very very handy for changing goods but you still need lots of ships. I have 18 and will build more tomorrow. 9 minutes is so nice. You only need one market too.

My cities are 4.5 hours away from each other, but I've been able to make a fair amount just selling low in one city and shipping to the other to sell at higher. The shipping time's been worth it, for me, to take advantage of both lower prices for what I need to buy, and higher prices of what I want to sell.
After a certain point, around when buildings take 4+ hours to build, I suspect city distance isn't a huge factor in the colony's growth any more anyway. And compare about how long the city will be small enough for that to make a distance, vs. how long the city will be around in all.

I started off with Bronze and with Bast as my god, He likes sandals.
So I picked leather for my second city ,Having Bronze as a resource I picked my leather city in a nome that had Ra has a god because he likes sculptures,Both my cities keep my gods happy but are an hour and a half away from each other.
Just saying it depends on how you wanna play it.

You really jump into the game :D
The funniest thing of the game (in my own play style) is exactly same as you're doing that plenty
By this reply, I beg Reed that don't do the travel time cap as someone mentioned before like 24 hrs limit. Just let the game run wild by itself.
I'll be back to discuss more about this later. Heading to bed now... 3 am

Ah, according to activation of travel time capped @ 24 hrs, no more need to discuss what I'd said in previous post. My plan in the game is canceled and I regret that I chose Cedar as my 2nd city.
I'm sad :(!

I don't think cedar sales are impaires by cap: you can trade with many more people, so more ships will be needed.

I think the "optimum" is around 7-9 Nomes away. This is between 2 and 3 hours travel time, which is manageable, with a slight overlap in your market coverage, but essentially doubling your potential market for goods searching.
As an example, Thanitopolous is located at 86 South. I placed Luxor 8 nomes farther south at 94 South. If I ever get a third city, it's going to be 8 nomes North at 78S. In this way, presuming Level 10 Markets, i'll have all the way from 68 South to 104 South (Or 36 Nomes) worth of "market space" to trade in. This also means that should I choose, I can buy goods from deeper in, where they are more likely to be cheaper... and then resell those goods down south in the lesser developed area for a slight profit, helping to ensure continual upgrading of the area are new players need new things. :p

I put my second city one nome away. I kind of liked that- I don't need to upgrade it's market past level 1 since I can buy listings from my main city and buy/sell orders don't have _my_ market as a range limitation.
I kind of wish I'd put my third city further away than I did, but oh well.

i have put my second city in the same nomes as my first. i don't need a market there at all and 9 minutes are so short :)

I put my expansion 24 nomes way to prevent too much overlap. I figure the time they start overlapping I shouldn't be too far from my third city.

Mine are 17 away. Its far enough that market overlap will be minimal and close enough to ferry goods back and forth without too much pain. As long as you have lots of ships, that is.

I planned my second city 10 Nomes away (3 hours) from my Capital & I am definitely glad I did. Entirely new Market range with no overlap at M5s & new trading partners. My 3rd will be 10 more Nomes away. I keep a supply of Marketable goods at both sites to sell.
You will find out that there is no real reason to transfer a ton of goods back & forth all the time. Plan on about 10 boats per city to handle whatever comes your way.

10 boats per city is usually what I keep
I can also speak from experience that it is not so beneficial to build close to your first city.. while it is faster I only find myself shipping things off and on... and I don't have the "whole new market" that I could have exploited.

I'd say it depends a lot on what resource you want. For instance I built a few nomes north of my main city to get emeralds, as there was a major emerald shortage in the area (big surprise eh) and it was obvious I needed to get a chip in the game cause my crappy oil town just wasn't gonna cut it.
I don't see any real point in building more than 10 nomes away though, as you'll get all the market coverage you need without stretching your supply lines too far.
