I happen to be listening to Shelby Foote's Civil War: A Narrative, on my IPod. This morning driving to work I heard a segment in which a cavalry captain in N Virginia, one John Mosby, had been captured by Feds while on a recruiting expedition. He was building a partisan cavalry unit.
He was imprisoned at Fort Monroe where he overheard plans to move Breckenridge's divisions up the James River to join Gen. Pope who was facing Jackson. Upon exchange, he immediately informed Gen. Lee of the move, allowing Gen. Lee to make the decision to reinforce Jackson.
Just thought it was cool.
