View Full Version : Game stops at "creating world"

I was playing hinterland fine up until quite recently, now it simply won't load anymore.
Oddly enough, hitting "start game" doesn't actually do anything unless I move the game screen or resize it. After I do that,
the game stops at "creating world". It loads up the bar to that point, and then stops.
Stops entirely, it stops trying to read from my harddrive, according to process explorer it stops using CPU. I can't do anything except exit the game.

I have the game on STEAM and i've already tried deleting local content and redownloading it, it stops at the exact same point.

I'm running an adequate system, with all the updated drivers from TODAY. Athlon X2 4600+, 2 gigs of ram, 8800GT(512mb). DirectX is the latest, videocard drivers are the GTA IV set that just came out (180.74?) I went through the incredibly annoying process of getting my Soundblaster Audigy 2 drivers off of their website.

I've tried changing resolutions and it doesn't help. Switching monitors does nothing (The game could use widescreen resolutions btw). Changing programs in the background is also useless.

Any ideas? I saw that you were requesting a DXdiag in other parts of the thread, so here's mine.

You could try resetting your prefs. There should be a resetPrefs bat file in the game directory, or you can run the game with the -resetPrefs command line parameter.

Other than that, did something else change on your system when it stopped working?

All sorts of things are different now, my PSU exploded on me and took one of my harddrives with it. I't wasn't the harddrive that STEAM was on, but it did do all sorts of crazy things to my registry settings as all of my drive letters were changed. Also considerably more problems that, yet again, i can't imagine being related to steam or gameplaying in any fashion.

-Resetprefs seems to have done the trick. It's working now.

Thanks. =)

I'm having the same problem but can't find the game directory. Any help here? Thanks.

I found the directory, but couldn't find a resetPrefs.bat. >_<

This sounds kinda like a problem I'm having (I posted about it on this Tech Support forum, a few posts down from here).

How do you get to the directory?

The game installs itself, by default to

C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Hinterland

In that folder, there should be a 'resetprefs.bat', which you just need to double click on.

If there is not, you can go to the following location on your hard drive.
NOTE: the application data folder for both XP and Vista is hidden. You need to view hidden files from your folder options when browsing files in your User Name folders.

XP-
C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\Application Data\Tilted Mill\Hinterland

or
VISTA-
c:\Users\<User Name>\AppData\Roaming\Tilted Mill\Hinterland

Delete the whole folder.
