Woke up today to find someone had taken over one of my monuments. I had the only two in the nome. Even more interesting he/she had also taken over a L5 monument a couple of nomes away. This is a new player with one L4 city. Who incidently I helped with a welcome to the game package a few days ago.
I quite enjoyed the feeling. Busy building some soldiers so I can try and get it back. I need the limestone. But really its not that bad.
My monument was guarded. There are a few around with 0 soldiers guarding them. While i don't like PvP that much this is fun in away. When I tune into the game twice a day I don't know what i'll find now.
Its not a bad part of the game but on the other hand I'm not going to try too many times. If S/he takes it over again I'll simply get a different one and leave them with two. There is not a lot of interest in monuments in this part of the world.

I don't know what to think. That's something. Definitely an accomplishment. Could earn you some powerful enemies very quickly, though!;)

Now s/he has started selling limestone at 6 on the market. He took over Ra the Hedgehogs unguarded monument so Ra could finally leave the game. Now that he has two hopefully won't be any more hassle.

I'd really like to have a monument, but it seems like such a hassle! You have to pay all that bread to keep up an army to take it and guard it, and then the minute you turn your back, some noobie takes it over and you have to build more troops to take it back again! gack! I might never get the courage up to even try.

That is how it might be at some places, but there are other parts of the world where most monuments are completely undefended, and several of the ones occupied by bandits have no defense at all. They are simply up for grabs.
In general I would not advise to take on a monument until you really need the limestone yourself for further expansion of your city, but if they can be taken so easily, it might be worth the investment to quarry some to sell it.

Yeah, I don't know if I want to bother with monuments in the new world. I do enjoy the bonus with them though.

Is it just a time bonus for transporting goods or are there other bonuses?:D

Is it just a time bonus for transporting goods or are there other bonuses?:D
Four bonuses: Decreased travel time across all cities, production bonus across all cities, defense bonus at the monument, and prestige (rank) bonus that builds over time. :D:D
http://www.immortalcities.com/nileonline/wiki/index.php/Monument_sites
Building a monument to level 5 requires a great deal of limestone (20500 limestone) and several days (86 hours). A monument provides a 1% production speed boost per level for all resources and all cities that a player owns. This boost is additive to the temple blessing. Two level five (5) monument plots will provide a 10% bonus to all of their owner's cities. If a temple blessing is activated, the temple blessing bonus is added to the monument bonus and the total production bonus becomes 20%.
As of patch 0.57, monuments will also provide a 1% transport speed bonus per level for all transports to and from all cities and monuments. Two level five (5) monument plots will provide a 10% transport speed bonus.
A monument also provides a 10% power bonus per level (including level 0!) for the units stationed at that monument. A level 0 monument has a 10% bonus, while a level 5 monument has a 60% bonus. As of patch 0.54, the bonus increases the lethality (not the defense power) of the defender's units in combat. For example, 600 units versus 400 defenders with a 60% bonus will usually crush the defenders, but they may not take the monument every time (less than against defenders with a 0% bonus) and they will sustain more casualties than normal.
Another mysterious aspect of the monument is that it accumulates prestige, which itself increases a player's rank. How exactly prestige figures into the ranking calculation is currently unknown.

Yes, there is a defender bonus, BrazNomer and I ran an experiment on this, "spearmen are deadly againse Cariots". I sent 19 spearmen against his 10 chariots, the battle came out even, I lost 3, and he lost 3, so the defender bonus is equal to the level that they are deadly. And there is a production bonus across all labor in all of your cities 1% for each level of the monument, so if you have two at level 5, you get 10/5

You can't say much with such low numbers--the randomness of the battle leaves too much to chance.
