Hi all.
I just wonder, if i am the only one getting this error when trying to start the game?
As soon as i try to start i am getting this message *Hinterland Application has stopped working*
I am using vista 32-bit, could that be the case?
I did the following before posting this,
Install the newest DirectX 9 and also the 10,
Install the newest graphic drivers
Search the forum, No luck.

Hope someone can help me

Would you please post your DX diag so we can look at your system specs. HL works on Vista so that shouldn't be the problem.

Yes thank you that's the files we need:) Now looking at your system it should run the game without a problem. Now the one thing that possibly might be the problem what order did you update DX. If you first updated DX 9 then DX 10 the DX 10 overwrote the DX 9 files needed to run HL. If that's what you did then the solution would be reinstall the upgrade of DX 9. Hope that helps solve your problem.

Ok let's start from the beginning did you verify your files on Steam? Did you try turning off your virus scanner while trying to play the game? For example I have an active spyware scanner that would block HL so when I wanted to play I had to disable that program.
Now that you've made the upgrades needed did you uninstall HL, reboot and then reinstall HL. Some times once a program has a run problem it will keep having the problem until it's uninstalled and reinstalled. Hope one of these solutions works for you.

Am getting the same on Windows 7 latest build 64bit. I got the game from a friend to try it out as I like tilted mill games, and after buying children of the nile I figured woot another good game. Now I installed it, I did install directx9 over my win7 just to be sure as that was posted in other forum parts as well and no matter what compatibility I try to run it in, it gives me the same error, that it stopped working. So I thought I join this post. Oh and I do not have any antivirus running whatsoever, also firewall is not blocking it but even if it did, that should not give an application error. I have a router only.

Thanx

Deanna until Win 7 goes gold you have no chance of making any game work with it. Beta operating system are bad test beds since none of the code is finalized nor are drivers optimized. Very likely no game written for XP will work with Win 7 since MS has not been writing operating systems for gaming. Vista and Win 7 have the same kernal which has struggled with games unless they were written with those operating systems as targets.
Sorry to not be able to offer more help but I have taken part in MS beta tests and found them to be problemic when it came to games.

Excuse me, and really not take this personal or insulting, but if you can not help please say that no problem, but what sort of a professional attitude is it that an OS has to go "gold" for things to work on it? Say it should be non beta ok, but this was a bit sarcastic and just pushing the issue onto the OS instead of trying to find a solution. I find that rather unfair.

Treat my question as if it was vista if you please but it is not a vista clone and yes I also saw the black comb project and wished they did not stop it and turn to vista, but hey we can see it now in win7 so yeh I am totally aware of what win7 is made of, quite a few testers out there it seems hm?

But all in all whatever works for the guy before me having vista showing the same error may work for me too then ok I will do that. Especially since vista is very non-beta. So I am still awaiting ideas if anybody has any and wishes to help. If you mean to say that the game does "not" run on vista for sure please state that so I can stop looking for a solution. Thank you for the support.

Oh and btw about winxp games not running on win7, have you actually tested this OS at all? I may not own many games, but what I do have and have been playing with since I installed this OS is the following: sims 2, alien vs predator, jurassic park, neverwinter nights, black and white, crysis, cryostasis, need for speed, earth 2160, children of the nile, call of duty (newest), red alert (newest with expansion). Some of these games are demanding in graphics and need the latest dx. So no I am in general having no problems running my old and not old games on this OS, let them be xp or vista games as you can see and my dx runs quite fine too.

So very sorry that your offended by my explaination. Win 7 is the first MS operating system that I haven't beta tested. But I have beta tested software for over 10 years from game to operating systems. Vista is since you want me to treat Win 7 as though it's Vista is not a gaming operating system with all hardware configurations. Some games and software written for XP will work just fine with Vista and some will not work at all even in compatibility mode.

Most tech help on this site is from volunteers whose sole goal is to help fellow gamers to play the game.

I thought it was a straight forward response, nothing really to get upset over. I dont know of any games right now that officially support Win 7 since it's still in beta.http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/konfus/a050.gif

I did not ask to treat win7 as vista, you were the one who said it has the same kernel, I merely accepted this and said ok then whatever works for the guy with vista might work for me. May I citate you:

"Vista and Win 7 have the same kernal..."

And the straight forward answer with again all due respect did not ask me any details, did not suggest anywhere to look, but it did make the "assumption" that my winxp or any other games will not run on the OS. May I citate again:

"Very likely no game written for XP will work with Win 7"

An assumption which is based on I have no idea what, and I have prooved it to be wrong by listing games which I do run so are by me tested on win 7 64bit. So what I was upset about was that the answer was not addressing my problem, it merely made statements about an OS which was not the question, and made statements about games not running on it without ever even trying them apparently.

So yes was waiting for anybody who has an idea what could be wrong with the game not starting up on vista or win7 giving application error with latest dx 9 installed over the dx that came with the os, and drivers of year 2009.

But since I find no answer I just decided to thank my friend who btw has win2003 and the game runs on it and not buy the product. Good luck to the guy with vista, hope he gets troubleshooting from this forum.

Mouse is not a paid employee or representative of TM. Just trying to help you out in a direct way.

One thing you can try is downloading Directx9c, (2007redist). It may contain dx files needed by the game not covered in other updates that might work with MS 7.

Good luck getting it to run with 7, if you do, I am sure we would all love to hear about it- but I guess you don't own it, so how were you trying to play it, oh..nvrmind.

Thanks for the years of dedicated fandom and support Mouse... Have some cheese!:D

BTW- For the Vista user, please check that you have the dx redist, or try running the game with the /resetprefs command after the exe. (There are some dx9 dll's that are called by hinterland not included in some versions of vista dx10 - nor may they be in the latest dx 9 drivers. I may be mistaken on this but I believe this was covered in another thread.)

I'm sorry I have been PLAYING IT FOR OVER 5 WEEKS now on Win7 64bit and I have no problem. All driver that works for Vista/NT will work on Win7. The Win7 is much better then Vista or XP, So I like to say you are miss informed. The 7 is maximast for playing games.

I using a program that will set back all programs that run in the background. Try this program and tell me if it helps:
http://majorgeeks.com/download6148.html
It is a free program and free download.
Plus I running it in DX 10. works like a charm

@Deanna,
I'm a Win 7 Beta tester and the Win7 is closer to XP then Vista. Many of the "kernal" is from XP they using the streamline of XP to boost the speed and they even have tweek them to work faster and better.Games that was written for XP or even 95 will work perfect in Win 7. The Win 7 is faster then XP and MUCH faster the Vista. All games that I have playes perfect on MY Win7 box and I now have change it in to my main game mashine.
