Healer problem

Hey folks,

I've just started so my apologies for the noob question.

The first time I played, I had an herbalist following the party and he would cast his healing spell all the time while avoiding combat which is what I expected.

Second time through, the herbalist insists on jumping into combat and never heals. I've tried two different herbalists with the same results.

What am I doing wrong? Do I have the wrong class? Is there a setting to make them cast instead of melee?

Make sure they have a wand in their hand ;)

The autoequip feature for followers is pretty silly, it gives melee equipment to guards you have upgraded to archers and to spellslingers like herbalists.
