They probably want to keep them all uninform in size and game related. Other than that I couldn't say.
I know you can limit size (both pixels and bytes) on most forums.
And as far as game related is concerned we are a pretty inventive bunch and I'm sure there are a bunch of artists (or atleast graphics designers) here, I think you might see a lot of cool game related stuff. Glyphs, Photos, In-game shots, There is just so much to do with the era and I would love to take my Photoshop to some of it :)
Perhaps if TM feels a bit ambitious they could find/make a hack that opens up the privlege to Senior Members only (I know you can do it for phpbb) to try and stem the completely new people coming in with no sence of community (...yet) with their animated-action-anime-avatar, and Im sure if they have a rule about it being in some way related to the game or CotN it would be followed. (or maybe im just a dreamer)

I agree that personal avatars would be nice. However, I think "allowing" only senior members to do so would be a bad choice. My main concern would be that it would invite silly, nonsense replies just so the poster could gain the "privilage" of adding his/her own avatar. I personally like to post at my own pace. Granted, I don't post often but I do read almost every post that is posted here. Perhaps after the game is released there will be more options for avatars. ;)

Maybe the administrator(s) of the forum could create a larger variety of avatars for use to choose from.. Personally, I'm quite happy with mine.
If you really want to have something unique in your posts, you can add it to your signature, like some have done on the forum.
After all, it's not the avatar that counts, it's what you actually write.
Yeah I think the problem could be avoided if there were more selection of avatars, Though personaly I dont think I will use a Glyph avatar as... well to be honest the background colour just doesnt thrill me, and it doesnt seem to flow with the rest of the forum. maybe a sandstone colour background, or a darker grey like this forum. If it were changed I might use one, some are pretty cool. (Am I alone in that critique?)

The blue background goes with the "Quote" and "Post Reply" buttons, the two little blue folder icons in the upper left corner and with some of the smilies. ;) And I think that's one of the original Egyptian backgrounds for glyphs, otherwise the admins might as well have used pink. :p
Thing is, there is a function - in words at least, as an option to choose a personal Avatar where you pick the one you are using. Except there isn't a way to insert it.
Making Avatars all the same size is easy - it comes built in as a Command in the forum - at least that's the way it works on mine. We encourage cat based ones, because my books area about feline aliens, and I got a stock of freebie gifs to give to folk who haven't found one.
It literally won't let you post one bigger than the size we set. ;)
If there was a mandate to only use Egyptian based Avatars, and the size is pre-set, it shouldn't be a problem.
However, if Tilted Mill wish us to stick to game based ones here, fair enough. It is their main site, after all. I was only asking because the option was there. If it hadn't I wouldn't have mentioned it.
Absolutely, what you Post is more important than an Avatar or even a sig, but its the pack beast in us - we want to scent mark a bit of this site for ourselves, leave our distinct Mark on uit in a nice way. ;) Like choosing Avatars and sigs. It's a harmless Human trait, at this level. :D

I've been to many boards that don't allow personal avatars. It's no big deal and I really don't miss them. The current system suits me and it gives the site a look of uniformity which is easy on the eye and less distracting.
But generaly on boards with avatars everyone has their own, so we dont need to read the poster's name, we can just see it in the corner of our eye and know who posted it. That doesnt work here, because I think 10 other people share that avatar with you Keith.

Gee, I didn't know it was such a chore to read a name like "Josh" or "Keith" and not know who it came from. (Especially, when names are in such a nice large font.);)
I like this way. No questionable avatars making questionable and in appropriate personal or social or political statements. No complaints from people objecting to someone else's choice of avatar, etc.
Keep it this way, Tilted Mill.

Yes, but they don't provide their own avatars there and I construct all my personal avatars to reflect the nature of the board or the game. Since I can only have one avatar at a time at VU, my current one reflects the board for Zeus/Poseidon. Otherwise I'd have one for Pharaoh, Emperor, and Caesar III boards each.

Maybe Luminaries and playtesters could get their own avatars to add a little variety.

Well, I'd rather prefer to see my personal (unique?) avatar also here, because it is what I see in all other forums that I take part in. Helps a lot to find my own postings in a thread...

Actually, I had no problems with the absence of avatars earlier. They tend to clutter up pages and while it could make it easier to recognise people, it often leeds to an uncontrollable riot of images, which would would need to be patrolled by the moderators.
I'd rather have more "staff approved" stock avatars instead of customized ones. I want to keep the Egyptian theme rather than have a picture of Condaleeza Rice or a picture of a tank or something equally anachronistic.

I'm just waiting for the guy who quarries that black stone....
Meanwhile I'll stick with the completed obelisk :)

I've seen this before and becomes an eyesore to look at.
