View Full Version : A Rediculous Request or The Library of Alexandria

Okay so we can build Pyramids and that’s wonderful, but something else that really made me interested in Egypt as a civilization was The Library of Alexandria.

I know this is a ridiculous, improbable, unlikely, and other synonyms request, but I will still raise it, just because I think it would be such a neat peaceful scenario

A. To build the sprawling marble structure

B. To create an incredible city with a strong economy, which many foreign traders visit. (So you can borrow their books and copy them quickly)

C. To create a city that can support an improbable amount of scribes

With victory conditions being a certain number of scrolls copied (if there are still victory conditions)

And hey, maybe we can build a lighthouse later?

Maybe the hardest to be absolutely historically accurate (as there is a lot of grey area related to both marvels) But it would also be the most visually impressive city built.

Just a thought, I know it wont make it in.

That would be fantastic! So many things come to mind when talking about Egypt.. So we've got pyramids and temples.. Maybe the library and lighthouse (as you said, they would both be hard to design as there aren't any 100% sure representations of the two - AFAIK, the only clues to how they used to look come from coins or text)... How about the Sphinx?

I think the Great Library falls out side the target eras of the game, so I would not expect to see it.

The Great Library is generally thought to have been founded in the 3rd century BC by Ptolemy II (309-246BC).

An expansion pack that would cover the later stages of ancient Egypt, a period when there was a rebirth of its former prestige and power..
Wait, the actual game hasn't been launched yet and we're already talking about expansion packs :D A lot of successful games have had expansion packs and/or sequels, and by the looks of it CotN will pretty much be a hit. So I guess we could expect an expansion pack, sometime in 2005. Frankly, I'd rather see the TM team involved in other projects, like an RTS. If you make the best CB yet, why not try your luck with the RTS market? Somewhere on their main site it says "Strategy, simulation, role-playing", so I guess they won't stop at CB's. We should wait until CotN is released, play it until the CD is on the verge of melting and then start annoying them with questions about their next release. :p

The TM crowd already have lots of experience working on a grand RTS project, so maybe that type of game will not be too far behind their current CB. ;)

:p

Was there a rebirth of 'former prestige and power.' ???

I recall a series of invasions. Becoming a appendage to Alexanders empire.
Then becoming an appendage of the Roman empire.
Then becoming an appendage of and Islamic empire.....

Culturally speaking. A lot of new temples were built and, of course, the library of Alexandria, which preserved some of the literary heritage of ancient Greece. Even though it was under foreign rule, Egypt was in a period of prosperity. The Ptolemies became 'egyptianised', the old temples and beliefs were left intact (even under the Roman rule). But it's understandable that this period is not included in CotN, no one would like to see Greek/Roman soldiers patrolling the streets of his city. When you speak about ancient Egypt, the first periods that come to mind are the Old and New Kingdom, not the Roman province of Egypt.

So far we've only seen pictures of pyramids as the major monuments. I'm guessing that there may be some mastaba building, maybe even a cave tomb. Who knows.

A cave tomb? Wow! ;) That is going back to pre-dynastic Egypt when the main center for the people who'd become the Egyptians was Naqada, isn't it? (this is me from memory, not nose in one of my books right now. ;) )

Vertical Shaft tombs of the early egyptians (or predecessors).

The story campaign will start at the transition point between nomadic
period and permanent aggriculture ???

They do play by themselves if you have a the player program for the people that created the smacker/bink format. www.radgametools.com (http://www.radgametools.com).

Thanks Keith. I loved the whole scene of the newly born one growing up.. then the death of the father. Wonderful graphics - it is how I imagine CoTN might look in game play. Fingers Xed!
So far any Egyptian puzzle games I have got refuse to work on XP despite saying they do. :( And I bought them cos of the foreword by some French Egyptologist praising the graphics etc. Sniff! Never got to see nary a one!
