View Full Version : Brickmakers - remove after large stockpile?

I have been making an unusually high number of brick makers for my building boom. I usually keep several bricklayers around, but usually two through five brick makers. But when I start my big boom of government building, I need hundreds sometimes thousands of bricks, so I'd have over ten brick makers.

When I don't need anymore bricks I remove about six of their buildings. Anyone else besides me do this?

Is there a downside to doing this?

Hi Ashkir!

Sounds like you're doing fine. You've run across one of the "dilemmas" regular players struggle with - do I delete a building/person or not? If/when you delete any brick makers you don't need any longer, you'll probably see the number of vagrants in your city increase. If your city has a large number of vagrants, people may start to get unhappy with security conditions unless you build some city guards and a commander to patrol. Personally, I try not to delete buildings/persons, but that's just my style of play.

If you haven't yet discovered or experimented with brickyards, I'd suggest doing so. They allow you to "stockpile" larger numbers of bricks AND to place a supply of bricks far from your brick makers - especially useful if you have any remote camps (perhaps for mining or quarrying)

I'm usually building something, so I never seem to have too many bricks. Large Sphinx can eat up a large number of excess bricks. I'll have as many as a dozen brickmakers in a city depending on the mission goals. I keep my brickmakers and bricklayers busy constructing buildings, or mastabas, or statuary around my city. I can't recall ever having to cut back on the number of brickmakers.

I need bricks early & often. I start with 10 minimum brickmakers, standard 8 layers no matter how many makers, 2 brickyards (so I can delete & move one of them) before I ever come off pause. Later they just pile up, agreed. No worries. At the end of a scenario, I will usually have thousands of bricks.

The start game needs tons of bricks, especially on Hard Difficulty for early prestige.

I refuse to nuke my brickmakers/layers, cuz they feel the pain & also they deserve to be treated well & spoiled cuz they served me well (and probably would get mad & become vagrants anyway).

I move my brickyards, but never my bricklayers. Same reason. I place my layers by my brickmakers. Once the layers get to the brickyard, they keep returning to it, so distance doesn't really matter that much.

I am with Keith and Tink on this one.

I start with 10 brickmakers in the very beginning, and work my way up to 20 to 24 in nearly every scenario. I build a lot of brick stuff and I want it to be finished in an instant when I build it. With 24 brickmakers, I can hold 2400 bricks in inventory, and with brickyards I can go far beyond that (I can't remember what a brickyard's limit is right now).

Not that I want to have bricks in inventory, at least not for the first 12 or so years. Then they start to pile up, and in the endgame, they are coming out of my ears.

I'm cool with that.

I also never delete a building, unless I'm redesigning an area of city that I planned poorly. That's common, because I don't plan very strictly; I get an idea and then go. But whenever I delete like that, I always place a duplicate in a new area of town, hoping that the guy will go there. Sometimes it works, and sometimes not. But That's the most I can do.

I believe it's 500 bricks per brickyard

Really? I've had brick yards with more then 700.

A brickyard holds a max 600 bricks. Distribution by deletion is 200 max, so be careful if you delete a brickyard with more than 200, or you can lose bricks w/o enough new empty brickyards available.

After having multiple brick problems, I've started building whole hordes of brick makers. It usually still isn't enough early on, but eventually I run out of things to build and they pile up. When I got enough, I just started blowing it on massive statues and such (the ones that only need bricks, to leave my other laborers available).

What exactly are the disadvantages to deleting a building? I had never done it until last night, and I only did it then because there apparently were no peasants left to fill the buildings I needed. I had no idea how to get more peasants, and thought that maybe if I deleted some buildings I didn't need anymore that the people might migrate to where I needed them.
