Thanks

What exactly do you mean by "fantasy CB"? A game that doesn't try to reproduce actual periods in time, but features goblins and trolls (not the forum ones :p ) instead? If so, I don't think there is such a game.
The one that gets closest to fantasy-surreal-cartoons is Zeus. :D

That’s the idea elf’s and dwarfs and things like that

A fantasy CB almost seems a contradiction in terms. All of the CBs that I know appear to be clearly based upon some historical template (like all the classic CB games or even SimCity).
Nevertheless, a fantasy CB would present an interesting subject as there would clearly be no need to be limited to historical reality. All sorts of surreal objects could be included in such a game. It could lead to some extremely interesting and highly creative subject matter --- especially if the devs are inclined to partake in the occassional medicinal herb to aid their creativity. ;)

Do the LotR (Lord of the Rings) games have any building aspects? They certainly have an interesting mixture of humans, elves, etc.

Imagine building a fully functional Ogre city.
With Ogre market ladies. Now that's a chilling thought.
Seriously, if other genres have taken up mystical themes (especially RPG's.. RTS's too.. Lately, even FPS's), why shouldn't the CB do the same? Although I'd prefer seeing CotN-style follow-ups to Zeus and Caesar than a fantasy CB. Maybe we'll see something like that 3-4 years from now.

There is a very old game made by SSI called "Stronghold" (not to be mistaken with Firefly Studio's recent "Stronghold" series) where you build a fantasy city populated by Mages, Elves, Dwarves, etc. It's an old DOS game, so it's almost impossible to find. It surprisingly still runs quite well on my laptop though. :)

Not a CB, but there was an expansion pack to Civ 2 called Fantastic Worlds, which had scenarios based on Tolkien, Verne, etc. Some of the units created for them were really cool. I bought it as a stand-alone, but I think it ended up in a Civ 2 bundle eventually.

There was "Majesty" which was sort of a loose CB/RTS. I didn't really like it but others may have.

Warcraft is an RTS, not a city-builder. Fantasy city-builders are very much a rarity. The only one I know of are SSI's "Stronghold". "Majesty" has building involved and simplified "strategy" elements, but it's still not a City-builder.

Would Dungeon Keeper count? Kind of hard to say, but I can't come up with anything other than what has already been listed.
Hmmm, maybe it is time for someone to make a really good Fantasy/CB game? You could all but guarantee a profit on one based in the Tolkien world, even if it was one of the worst games ever. So a good one ought to do very well.
I can picture it now, the "introductory" levels would teach you the mechanics by getting you to build the Shire...
OK, probably never going to happen, but if it did I would probably buy it.

i have all of these apart from the old stronghold (have the new one of course) Most fantesy games seam to have a RTS flavor but one CB may come out at some time i think it would sell well :)

Ooh, I want to build Khazad-dum. And then, Minas Tirith.

The license costs for a LotR theme would probably be insane and impossibly to afford for an independent developer. That said, I'd absolutely love to build Minas Tirith (http://www.minastirith.com/). :)

Finally! I am not alone! You are the first person outside of my own head to mention the game that set me on the road to maddness!
Dungeon Keeper was my very first PC game and still my all time favorite.
"Heros and Imps and Killer Farts...oh my!!"

Yeah, that was a pretty twisted game. Might have to dig it out and see if it runs on my new laptop...

Maybe Age of Mythology and it's expansion Age of Mythology:Titans might meet the requirements :D But it's more about fighting the bad guys than city building ;)

I liked Age of Mythology but it seemed to be getting away from RTS as well.
Walk here, kill these guys, walk there, kill those guys. and so on

Definately not a CB, just like the Age of Empires games it came from. Placing buildings to allow more/better armies is completely RTS.

I've played all of the above games (except Dungeon Keeper, which I could never get to run) and IMHO Majesty comes closest to being a fantasy city-bulder. My wife and I both used to play it constantly, and I bought the expansion kit the day it hit the stands.
But, a fantasy city-builder in the style of the Impressions CB line doesn't exist. Perhaps TM can consider it for a future project.

How is "Majesty" like? I've always been curious and the demo doesn't really give much options.

Dungeon Keeper is an old game and I remember having a hard time with it after I upgraded my system.
I didn't like Majesty too much. There was no real challange and no depth to it. It would be ok to play if you just wanted to kill some time. It's probably fairly cheap to buy now. The game is not much better than the demo really.

What about 'Seven Kingdoms' and sequels? They are a little strange at first and more RTS than CB, but especially SK2 comes closer to a fantasy CB.
There are fantasy mods for civilization (1-2-3-etc). I have tried 'CIV II - Test of Time', which is not only the original game but has also some fantasy world to play in and the midgard-world to play (ancient nordic people). Somehow to have to get used to all the structures which have strange names then, I never could manage to like that. But if you are in fantasy and willing to learn a lot of new words this might be a game for you.
Majesty is just another AoE-clone (imo). It survived at most 15 minutes on my computer...

I would agree that Dungeon Keeper I & II are both fantasy themed CBs, if you include dungeons as cities. For a Turn-Based Strategy that is fantasy and also very old school find Master of Magic. It is highly fantasy themed and it is not just Civ with fantasy names. The magic system allows for a little bit more of the fantasy emersion experience than playing the Civ counterparts.
I am glad I am not the only DK fan out there.

I liked DK a lot, both parts. But I would not rate them as CB but RTS instead: The goal is to produce enough of your minions to win against your enemies. There are no goals with respect to your structures you have built.
