Has anyone, who recently got the game, tried out the editor yet? What's it like? Is it easy to use? What about the scripting element...do you need to be a programming wizz kid to use it?

I believe there is another thread on the editor and some people have tried it and discussed it there.

I only opened it once to look around, then jumped out and found the manual and skimmed it. It's a menu interface with lots of buttons! There's a map making module vs. a scenario/campaign module etc. kinda' like Zeus editor.

First impression is it's trickier making maps. Not in terms of painting etc. but in terms of designing.

In CotN the land height is a big deal because of the annual inundation. So land height is a LOT more controllable in fractions vs. integers of height units.

There is land that is always dry (safest building area), land that is always wet (river), land that is usually flooded annually (normal inundation - crop area), land that is flooded periodically in the harder scenarios (unusually high inundation - don't build here unless you're willing to rebuild every several years).

Sorry I can't respond about scripting in depth. But first impression was it has menu settable event triggers etc. like Zeus editor. I am not doing full justice here but next time I look will add if I can. :)

Does the editor or other parts of the game have a random map feature like Emperor. The maps were often awkward to play, but a great challenge.

I think that was answered in another post as... (sorry) "nope".
