I cannot get the game ( purchased from EB games ) to install on my machine.
During the InstallShield Wizard Set Up, when nearly all the files have been downloaded, at the “ Publishing Product Information “ stage, the “ InstallShield Wizard Completed “ screen appears, but with the lines – “ The Wizard was interrupted before Immortal Cities could be completely installed. The system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, run again “. The only option is to finish.
The game will install on other machines.
I have a 2.2 GHz ( Celeron CPU ), 640 MB RAM, VisionTek XTASY 9200 Video Card, Sound Blaster Live audio, Sony DVD-ROM drive, 11 GB hard drive space available, Windows XP.
I have updated all drivers, defragged hard drive, cleaned drive etc, increased page file size to 700 MB.
HELP!!!

Hi Flatcap,

Check out the link to Microsoft TS below for instructions that may resolve the problem.

Please let us know if their instructions work.

Thanks,

Got as far as the Access Permission/Default Security screen, but I don’t know what “ user account “ is or how to add.
Just for info’ I tried some other investigations.
I uninstalled Warhammer 40K ( previously installed with no problems ) and tried to reinstall but as with Immortal Cities, when the InstallShield Wizard program got to the “ Publishing Product Info “ part, it crashed to desktop. Two things have changed with my system since I installed Warhammer 40K. I downloaded the Windows Security pack SP2 and I installed the Sony DVD-ROM.
I also reinstalled other games ( Sacred, Divine Divinity, Nemesis of the Roman Empire ) with no problems.

I can also report this problem.

The install worked fine on my laptop, but will not work on my wife's desktop. This has not happened with other games.

I am enjoying CotN quite a bit on my other machine, but it has to go in for repairs. If this error is not fixed quickly, word of it could inhibit sales of what is otherwise a good game.

Any progress so far?

Quick question - something that may be going on here. What Service Pack are you using? The game installs fine on my machine with SP1, but not on the SP2 machine.

Could this be the issue?

The Microsoft Help linked above did nothing to stop the problem, btw.

Flatcap:

The "user account" is the ID that you use to log into Windows. Some people have Windows set up to log in automatically to remove the need to enter their password every time they turn on or reboot their machine. If you know the ID that is used to log into Windows, that is what you should add to the "Select Users, Computeres, or Groups" window described in the Microsoft KB article that Greg linked earlier. Simply type the user account into the text box that is labeled "Enter the object names to select". When you enter the text, click Check Names to make sure that it is found properly, and click OK.

I'm doing research on potential issues with InstallShield and SP2 at the moment. From my early findings, it does indeed look like a problem that people are having with SP2 and InstallShield installers. It's a somewhat rare problem that doesn't occur on everyone with SP2, so it's pretty hard to track down the exact problems. I'll be doing some more research this afternoon and will get back to this thread with more info later.

In the meantime, a potential work-around that may or may not work is this: If you have enough hard drive space, create a folder on your drive and copy the contents of the CD to that folder. Then, run the setup from your hard drive and see if it makes a difference.

Hopefully there will be something better in my research this afternoon.

Cheers!

I was in the process of doing this exact thing as I read your reply, strangely enough.

No go. Same error.

I tried adding my “ user account “ code, but only got a “ name not found “ result. Reinstalled all new drivers and a few Microsoft updates plus deleted some programs ( Nero/Kazaa ) and amazingly Immortal Cities installed with no problems. Just for info, Warhammer 40K installs, but does not run, but that’s a different story.
Anyway, thanks to all for the help.
Can only recommend to anybody with similar problems to keep trying with updated drivers etc. Oh! I probably owe Sony an apology. I really thought it was the DVD-RW drive.
About the game – looks good, spent a couple of hours going through the tutorial.

Nice to hear Flatcap.

Can you precise on which drivers you updated? I am having this problem with CotN and also Rome: Total War. Both worked fine on my Service Pack 1 machine.

Anyone find a concrete way around this?
My game still won't install.

Everything is updated, dx is fine, no corruptions, just stops installing at the publishing bar and says it was interrupted

Nothing in this thread helped either

edit: Also on account on the computer is me so I am admin

Hey del,

This is unfortunately a known, but random issue with Installshield and XP SP2. Most folks have no problems with the installation, but there are a few people that run into this issue. We're still investigating and trying to find the root cause of this.

If you could post your dxdiag so that we can check for similarities between your machine and others having the same problem, that would be terrific!

Thanks!

Hi shahtrughna,

Flatcap is the only one that I've seen have any luck getting around this. As he posted above, he used Windows Update to install various fixes and checked for latest drivers for his hardware. That's about all we can offer for suggestions right now, as this is an undetermined glitch between XP SP2 and InstallShield.

If using Windows Update and updating any out of date drivers doesn't work, please post here and let us know.

Thanks!

Hi guys, how are you? I just got the game, and was having the exact same problem, using SP2, installation interruption, blah blah. Well, after a lot of research and what not, I found that two services were disabled on my computer:

Distributed Transaction Coordinator
Distributed Link Tracking Client

Apparently, these two services have something to do with allowing a user account access to certain directories, scripts, processes, etc. When they're disabled, it appears as if the computer doesn't have all the information it needs to verify account permissions. The two services above are dependant on these two services:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Security Accounts Manager

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) should be enabled by default, so you shouldn't need to worry about it. To check the other services, go to the start menu, load the run dialog, and enter "services.msc".

Here's what I did to get it all working:

Open the start menu
Open the run dialog
Type "services.msc" and hit enter
In the Services dialog, go down to "Security Accounts Manager" and see if its started. If not, double-click it to load its properties. Set the startup type to "automatic," click "apply" then click "start." Once it's started, hit the "OK" button.
Go to "Distributed Link Tracking Client" and see if its started. If not, double-click it to load its properties. Set the startup type to "automatic," click "apply" then click "start." Once it's started, hit the "OK" button.
Go to "Distributed Transaction Coordinator" and see if its started. If not, double-click it to load its properties. Set the startup type to "automatic," click "apply" then click "start." Once it's started, hit the "OK" button.

The services need to be started in that order if they're disabled, or the Distributed Transaction Coordinator won't start due to its dependencies not being loaded.

I'm unsure if this next bit is necessary, but I did it just in case:

Open the start menu
Open the run dialog
Type "dcomcnfg" and hit enter
Load the "Component Services" screen
Expand Component Services > Computer and go to properties on "My Computer" by right clicking
Go to the "COM Security" tab
In the "Access Permissions" section of the dialog, click "Edit Default"
Make sure "SELF" has the proper permissions set to Allow, mainly "Local Access"

Once that's all done, close the dialogs and reboot the computer.

After I did all that, CotN installed perfectly and loaded fine with no problems at all. I hope this helps!

Sshahtrughna, I've had success helping people trying to install the older citybuilder games that seem to hang during the install process that may help you get CotN installed on your machine.

The problem with the older games is that they would get to 99% and then just sit there or the installer would seeming just quit, the install progress indicator would just vanish and the person would be left sitting at the desktop. Previously the advice was to just let the computer sit for anywhere between 20-50 minutes and often the install would complete. Most of the time it was successful but no always.

Your problem is a little different in that something is causing the installer for your game to to quit. Try the following:

Reboot into the Safe Mode with access to system devices so you can use the CD drive. Install the game in the Safe Mode. Then if successful, reboot into the normal startup mode and run CotN.
