View Full Version : Game crashes on starting campaign

Hi

I am so frustrated, I bought the game from the US as I couldn't wait for it to come to the UK only to find that I can't start a camapign as it (like others here) falls back to the desktop when I attempt it. XP then prompts me to send an error report to Microsoft.

As far as I can tell, I have plenty of power to run the game. 2200XP Athlon, 512DDR Ram, 32Gb spare HDD space and a 64mb Geforce Video card with the most up-to-date drivers downloaded last night from NVidia.

I attach my DXDiag text file in the hope that someone here can help me. Now I go back to trusty Pharaoh to build a civilisation and await a reply

Thanks in advance

Your graphics card is a Riva TNT2 - don't think that's supported. Did you also try the tutorials?

I have played the odd scenario and tutorial and they were fine. I am not going to be very happt with darling hubby if he forgot to put my 64mb Geforce in when he swapped my bits and pieces over to a different machine LOL.

I hope thats all it is

I'm also having the same problem and I can't even play scenarios except for the ones i've created. I am also able to play the tutorials, so I don't know what could be the problem. I would also like to know why this is happening.

Your soundcard driver are a bit old too. If changing out the graphics card to the newer one doesn't fix it, look for updated audio drivers.

I am going to the shop tommorrow and getting a 128mb geforce from the storeroom (yes i own a computer shop!!!!), so I am hoping this will do the trick...........................I am so frustrated!!!!!!!!!

The Riva TNT card doesn't support Transform and Lighting, and that may be your problem.

I posted a small list I found:

It worked, just fitted a Geforce 128mb card in and now I have lovely graphics and no jittering cursor either.

I'm having all the above problems. The game crashes to desktop on all but the tutorials, there are workmen stuck at the dock, marching in place, a barge has grounded over the storage depot with the stone, there is other stone across the river, and workmen occasionally hook up to it and tow it across the river as across land, but it doesn't get to the site. Overseers stand there in confusion. I've taken most settings back to minimum, but I think this game is still larger than I can run. My experience would suggest that many problems are related to lack of computer resources.

Yes --- this would indeed seem to be the problem. :(

What sort of system are you running? It's quite possible that if it is a lack of resources, a small upgrade to your system could substantially improve the performance.

I'm running on a high-end laptop on WinME, and I feared this game would be a close squeeze, though I had looked forward to this game a great deal and decided to try it. I've been able to finesse other high-end games into running---but I think this one has hit the technological wall. My memory is maxed at 512 and my CPU is a PIII 1gig with InVidia Go. On Children of the Nile, I can run the tutorials smoothly, the graphics work fine, and with a Dell touchpoint mouse and a touchpad, I have no trouble with maneuvering, all with the video controls set as the game comes out of the box. But when my game stalled on an endless pyramid build, I decided to move on to the Scenarios, and suddenly nothing works. Even with every control on video set to absolute rock-bottom, it still won't load any Scenario or the Campaign---It persistently crashes to desktop when I click on the item.

Next step: I'm going to install on a newer, higher powered XPPro laptop to see if it behaves better, and, last-ditch, on our desktop.

I do wonder if the WinME OS could make a difference, and if I should install that XPPro I've had waiting in the drawer.

I'll look into the NVidia Go graphics card you're using, to confirm that's compatible, but I expect it is.

A suggestion though, since you're running WinME (applies to Win98 as well) and an NVidia graphics card, you may have better luck with older drivers. We've had better results with the 53.04 drivers found here (http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_53.04.html).

Hope that solves your problems.

Brilliant! I downloaded the driver you suggested and the crash-to-desktop error disappeared.

When I did get the Grand Campaign up, I had a totally whited-out map except for the cities. I chose one, and began play. Once assured it was going to run, I went to settings and Restored Defaults. The map acquired details, the landscape acquired fog and dust, and the game ran as it ought.

Thank you very much. Your help was dead-on and may well improve the machine with other applications.

What sort of system are you running? Let's start there, although I don't expect it is HW related, as you can play the tutorials and scenarios you create. Ruling out hardware problems is a good first step.

I am new at this forum stuff but here goes. I am having the same problem as Miw-Sher had. I have the Nvidia Riva TNT2 and realize I need to get a new video card. I was just wondering if you had any suggestions as to which card is the best - (not the most expensive) for this and other games. My computer is a Dell Dimension 4100 with 867 megahertz Intel Pentium III with 384 megabytes installed memory. I checked out the list mentioned previously. Any suggestions you could give so I don't purchase a dud would be helpful.
P.S. Oh, by the way, I run Windows XP.

Hello, I am new to the forum also but am having the same problem. I am able to play the "Learn to Play" scenarios fine but it crashes when I try to do the Grand Campaign or stand alone scenarios. I know I have an ATI Rage 128 Pro video card which I saw earlier is not compatible with Lighting and Textures so I have them cut off. I have the video settings set for performance. My question is why would the tutorial scenarios work with this video card but the campaign won't?

Honestly, I'm surprised it works at all. I wouldn't expect the game to get past the loading bar.

P.S. Oh, by the way, I run Windows XP.

If you are looking for an ATI card, the 9000 should run Children of the Nile without any problems, but doesn't support all the features in the game. The next big step up would be to a 9500 or newer, which are Dx9 native cards, and support all the game’s features.

Looking at NVidia, the GeForce 2 should run Children of the Nile without any problems, but doesn't support all the features in the game, and the FX5200 or newer which are Dx9 native, and support all the game’s features.. More info can be found in Jeff's post (http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showpost.php?p=34177&postcount=2)

I'm also having problems taking snapshots. When ever I click the button to take them it takes me back to my desktop. Here’s my dixdiag file.

Doesn't sound good. You can still use your computer's PRINT SCREEN /PRNSCRN button to make a screensave to the clipboard memory. Then open a graphics editor like Paintshop Pro or Photoshop, etc. an PASTE AS NEW IMAGE and then SAVE it as a fle to your computer. Then upload it here.

It looks like you have a Rage Mobility video card. I don't believe that card supports Hardware T&L and that it is DirectX 9 compatible. This is likely the source of your problems with the game.

Keith

Hans is right. Rage cards don't support T&L. Time for a new video card.

Here's a list of popular cards that do and do not support T&L:

Hi,

I am having a similar problem. The 3 tutorials play fine, but when I try to load the grand campaign or a scenario, the screen goes black and I am immediately returned to the windows screen. I am attaching my dxdiag file for you to inspect. I am not a technically savy person, so any assistance or advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I would really like to play your game.

I was told my text was too long so I will send it in two parts if you need the rest of the information.
