What are the very first three things you do when you get to a new map?

I do the following:
1. save a MyRestart file
2. clear vegetation (possibly not caring about buildings since I can always reload) so I can see what resources are where
3. look around for resources to determine where to start my city

My 3 first steps as follow:

1) Pause and save a restart
2) Look for a decent city start point based on proximity to available resources, especially for significant flood plain for dense farming.
3) plunk down my basic city start set of palace, farmers, nobles and shops

Pretty similar to yours, Maatkaamun.
This does bring up a minor nitpick I have with the game - loading a saved game always comes up running, even if I saved on pause.

1. Pause.
2. Put down palace, couple of nobles, 20 farmers, 4 common shops, and 4 brickmakers. Unpause.
3. When those are pretty much down I lay down 2 bricklayers, baker, priest, school, entertainer, 5 servants, 6 luxury shops, and 1 small mastaba.

This usually holds me for long enough to take a closer look at everything and begin thinking about how I want to lay out all of my religious, healthcare, and funerary services. My next step would be to add nobles one or two at a time while building up my resources and placing priests and services as educated workers become available.

 I just realized I put my name in the title lol. :D

If we're talking about what we do b4 we play, my list looks something like this:

1) Put daughter to bed
2) Put wife to bed
3) hit the head/loo

Hit the pause button,
1.look for the flood plain,
2.lay down some roads,
3.create the farmers part of the city,
4.create the brickmakers part of the city,
5.create a scribes area for assessing taxes,
6.do not put in any building just yet
7. lay down some roads for shops for elite housing and palace (still no buildings
8. save map as city name 1 which is my restart map

Oh yes I LIKE this question!

1. Open the scenario immediately hit PAUSE and save file as: scenario nubt 000 start etc. * saves a LOT of files as goes along *

2. Explore the ENTIRE map and mark out all resources including those needed for common shops, luxury shops, weapon makers, quarries, mines (they really HIDE those mines) * likes exploring *

3. Mark the WATER LINE (border between never-floods and sometimes-floods) near plantable river deltas. * hates being flooded ever *

4. (can I say 4?) Mark all eligible BARGE LANDING sites * has a 'thing' about barge landings eye twitch eye twitch *

At this point I can pull back and confidently identify areas for core city, work camp/remote city etc.

What are the very first three things you do when you get to a new map?

1. Save start file
2. Explore map for largest farming areas.
3. Place an overseer & right click to see what resources I should look for. Then delete overseer and look for the resources.
4. Check coastline for availability of barge landings.
5. If I need a very large pyramid, check for available sites to build it and place base.
6. By this time I should have decided where to start my city. Lay out road for palace/nobles/educated workers area.
7. Finally put down my first buildings.

How do you mark things? Do you mark them so you can see them on the minimap, or just so you can find them again while scrolling?

Maatkaumun: I use plazas under plants, trees; use roads to outline mines etc.

I mark to see for scrolling... minimap still can't see beans re details :)

P.S. I also use JuliaSet's trick to mark out areas for large pyramids before start building... make sure can do it when needed
