Certain cities come preassigned with patron dieties.

Click on your Administration Report, then hover over the worship line to see if your city has one. (can also see list in manual or inGame Help)

If you have a patron diety it means you're going to eventually need to build a cult temple and dedicate it to that diety. Otherwise people will complain a lot (more).

Cult temples are bigger (more bricks) than regular temples. Also need big vs. little statue (but you don't need that right away.) Best of all: cult temples look kewl!

btw what's the use of the statue? People can worship in it without.

I'm gessin' at this point... more effective with statue than without, but still more effective as cult temple w/o statue than normal temple?

In my last scenario I made a temple to Sobek with statue, but they still preferred the cult temple to Sobek without statue. Was not ever able to get big statue.

You can't dedicate the temple unless you have the statue.

They are worshipping to any god at that point. A temple dedicated in name only is still seen as a generic pantheon type-thing - pray to whoever you want. Check your worshippers as they pray and you will see that they are thanking Isis, begging for Hapi's mercy or just grooving to Osiris.

A dedicated cult temple limits who they can pray to, but is much more effective at meeting religious needs. While your citizens can still pray to any old god in an undedicated temple, they are quite happy with that - or at least won't be for the long term.

That's partly true. However, a dedicated temple does not "limit" who your people can pray to. It simply increases the satisfaction people get when they want to worship a certain deity.

For example, when you have a cult temple undedicated the people will be able to worship any god. When you dedicate that temple to Osiris, the people will be much more satisfied when they want to worship Osiris. However, if they want to worship other gods besides Osiris, they can still do so.

If I recall correctly, I think David Beebe said that a undedicated shrine or temple has zero effect on your people's religious needs.

I think David was referring to shrines. Undedicated temples do provide some religious coverage, while undedicated shrines do not.

Anyway, usually shrines and may be an undedicated temple are enough to keep people in the green. I never dedicate a temple. Sometimes, either because it is a goal or because I am building a big monument, I dedicate a cult temple.

I agree with vic_4. I usually have tons of dedicated shrines peppering my city. Sometimes a dedicated Temple and only a cult temple if it's a requirement. Cult temples do look very nice, but can be buggers to place in small areas (Abu) when so much other stuff needs to go there.
