I hate the editor for this game... normally I love the map maker... but with this one, its just... I dont know, overly complicated?
Did you guys make it this way on purpose, or does it have to be this complicated because the game is 3d?
I cant even draw out the high flood plain like it says in the tutorial on this forum because when I set the numbers to 1, 90, 6 nothing happens! I see the map wiggle a bit like its being edited but I dont see anything show up... and if I right click I get hit with a huge river bed in the shape of a big round blob!
I even tried to carve out the river bed first and still nothing happened. This is really irritating. :( Note, that this didnt happen at first untill I deleted the one I was fiddling with and started a new one...
Oh, and why dont the arrow keys work?? I cant get the settings for Flood Plain because when I go to set the Fine elevation it skips over 89 and either jumps to 91 or 87... if I wiggle the mouse a tiny bit I can get 88, but not 89! Arrow keys to set the elevations would be help full. Keep the sliders, but make it so we can use the arrow keys on the keyboard, or atleast the number pad! =S
Im not going to be very happy if I have to reinstall this game just to get the blasted editor to work right.

Dreamsoftwilight: the settings are -1, 90, 6 (that's negative one)
When you paint floodplain you will see the map darken and drop down.
You quoted +1 which is above water and would elevate the terrain (making it wiggle a bit) but leave it light grass colored.

Have you tried turning down your mouse sensitivity setting in Windoze?

I suggest you read Matts lessons, they should help you a bit. You can set the fine elevation to 89 by clicking above the ball, instead of clicking on the arrow. Click on the black bar increases (or decreases) the elevation by 1.
Best advice I can give you is to be patient, you'll get the hang of it. Press F2 and use the tilde to move the camera easiest and fiddle around with elevations for a while, those two things are the most... annoying. :)

Ok so I was reading -1 and using +1... give me a break I went to bed at 5am (girl friends website I was working on)... and then woke up at 7am because I couldnt go back to sleep after feeding the cat...
Anyway... I read Matt's tutorial #1 three times before, during and after fiddling with the game... even read through the other 3 tutorials (just not thouroughly since Im not that far yet).
However I stick by my previous comments that the arrow keys/number pad need to be added as tools to the editor... and a one-click river maker would still be nice. ;)
While taking a break I tried out that satelitte data site, and I got (I hope) the bin and hdr for Alexandria.

Agreed.
I read your post several times and overlooked the missing negative sign myself. Another victim of too little sleep. Good eye sitearm9.

Since Matt is here (sorta lol), how do I get the data files to show up in the editor once you get them from that satelitte site?
I have them in the file that the manuals says I need created, and I have the text file with the max columns and max rows (or whatever it is)... but it doesnt show up in the elevations list...
I believe Kieth had this problem, but I dont know where his post about it is.

/me continues the "Random Map Generator Script" chant that will soon permeate the boards.
It doesn't even have to be perfect.
I can fix/change the resources stuff if I don't like what the script did, but rivers and interesting landforms -- I just don't have the gene for. A World Level random generator would go nicely with this, just make sure a player can import basalt, granite, and limestones and gets a couple traders selling luxury wares.

You have to rename the HDR file to DAT to get it to show in the import list of the editor.
Plus you need that new TXT file with the rows and columns listed in it.

I hope noones takes this the wrong way, but I'm just wingin it. I do everything visually on my scenarios and when I run into issues, I refer to the editor giude and lessons for help. I don't use elevation numbers, my flood plains seem to be doing fine when I test the map, but thats just me. Some answers in other posts I'm waiting on to be answered. The editor isn't that hard, really.. and I've just made Starcraft maps in the past.
