View Full Version : Clairification on Commanders please

This is a question that has bothered me a bit and now is the time to ask it so we are all sure.
How many soldiers can a commander command? I have seen that it is 10. Now, is this 10 actual soldiers which would be 3 1/3 soldier's homes or is it 10 soldier's homes which would in actuality be 30 soldiers. This can make a big difference where to conquer a Raider city that says it requires 100 soldiers. That would mean at least 34 soldier homes and 10 commanders and that seems to me to be way too many commanders.
Would just like clarification on this since it will definitely effect your level of educated elites.

Shirkon: One commander can cover as many as 30-45 soldiers (10-15 barracks) that I've seen. Above that you'll likely need another.
The real place to check in your scenario is the world map: When you click on a city to conquer, it will tell you how many army commanders (and sometimes navy) you need.
Rule of thumb I'm using is: stick with one commander to train troops, no matter how many troops, until world level map check confirms whether I need more.

Yeah I finally figured that out. I'm on the Iunu scenario and the Bediuin City needs 100 soldiers to conquer. Too bad it didn't specify there that it was 100 charioteers not just a mix of 100 soldiers. Had to go back and reassign the archer's and spearman to charioteers. With the 100 soldiers it requires 3 commanders and I have 114 soldiers which means each commander is leading 38 soldiers. It just didn't make sense that 1 commander could only command 10 soldiers like one of the threads stated. Would mean the commander was more of a sargeant or corporal then an actual officer.

Some missions only require 1 commander and 40/60 mixed military :D Like siearm I don't add commanders unless required 1 does the training.

I had one scenario that required 100 trained charioteers to take a nearby enemy city. It said I needed 3 commanders. I only had one. I still won easily.

If you hover the mouse over the icon telling you the number of soldiers needed, you can see the breakdown of exactly which soldiers it wants before actually attempting to send your army, and thus you can know what kind of army you'll need before meeting any other resource requirement.

What were your losses? It is possible to win even if chances are less than certain, but troop and weapon losses are always higher and take longer to replace, if you need to go out on multiple missions.

I don't believe there is any fixed ratio between Commanders and troops built in. My belief us that's only determined by the scenario writer, who sets the requirements for each goal on the world map.
My guess is you can require 5 Commanders and no troops at all to win a battle. Will know more once I graduate to the editor.

...although that would be typical of the no-hard-numbers, simulating the organic flux of life, approach to the overall design of the game...

In the 100 charioteers to 1 commander, I had very few losses. My outcome was given as "very high" and my casualties "very low".

multiple commanders seem to train more soldiers at a time. Usually. When I have educated workers slot free I usually add commanders in military scenarios.
