I have been noticing more and more that the wives of my nobles and educated elites are not shopping as they should. I had one overseer's wife who would only leave the house to attend feasts at the nobles' houses. Then she'd come right back home without so much as visiting the bakery or anything. The same thing, day in and day out. She sure liked to party.
So of course, her husband decides building that small pyramid isn't really that important and instead starts protesting right by it.
Has anyone else noticed this occuring? I have plenty of servants around for those that use them, but this still seems to happen every once in a while.

I've noticed that with the overseer and his wife, that she will sit and preen and party and preen while he is working. When he isn't working, they both will go out shopping, and even if you provide for them a servent, the servent only works when the husband is in town. Their kid will go to school and back home again.
Now, if you throw a religious festival, the wife and husband attend, then the party and pray needs are meet. She'll go shopping right after. Bring them home, send off her husband to work, and sit and preen, party and preen, and the whole cycle starts over again.

The servant is like a royal retainer, only for nobles. They carry goods and sometimes food. When things are getting desperate, they will get only whats nessicary or more than enough [depending on their budget  ]

The different social classes have different times that the wives go shopping.
Farmer's wives go out on Harvest at 7:20pm to get most of what they need and if they have less 2 or less goods and food to barter will head out 6am that day shopping, to do her chores afterwards.
Common merchants are weird because while Dad and children go out to gather resources, only Mom assembles or shops, and splits her life between the two.
What causes Nobles to go out shopping is still a mystery. It seems that foreign good stalls opening in the merchant area convince them to go out, and then they buy luxury and common goods on the return trip.
Setting the Overseer on "Do Nothing" puts the whole family in heavy shopping mode... until they start going to parties and yachting.

I think Wondertwin you will just have to kill her and thereby train her not to do it again :D

Nefret is right.
I had an overseers wife who would take about two steps out of the house to go shop and then turn right around and begin combing her hair the rest of the day. No common goods. No luxury goods. NO FOOD! It wasn't long before that miserable overseer was protesting and neglecting his tasks.
I applied the "Nefret solution" and the new overseer soon was joined by a fine, dedicated, shopping, wife who was later heard to say, "ahhh! all this shopping will make me drop!" But the house was filled with goodies! :D

Well, you can't kill them directly, but you can achieve much the same result by demolishing the house and replacing it after they move away...

They will also harvest resources for luxury shops. Educated elite don't get to use them.

They also fetch resources for gov craftsmen I believe. I'm pretty sure I remember them harvesting leather and acacia for my weapon and armor makers before...

I had two of my four noble houses being 'difficult' in a game last night, the wives simply never left the houses, all their needs indicators were red despite everything they craved being right outside their very home - literally.
In the end Pharaoh had had enough and demolished both their homes, needless to say the new occupants were extremely happy and acquired all the goods they needed.
Next time it will be no length investigations as to why the lazy wife isn't leaving to shop, the bulldozers will just arrive...

........the bulldozers will just arrive...
LOL! I suddenly had this thought about "The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy" :D
Oh, btw, make a note of the family name before you send in the bulldozer. I had a "non-shopper" Scribe family move into a newly built Overseers house after I knocked down their first house. They continued to do the same behavior in the new house. But I caught it, and bulldozed them a second time. This time they had no choice but to emmigrate. (..and about time..)
