In Pharoah, I could go out to the world map and then look at the land I'm suppose to build a city on in a "zoomed out" view. I could move the mouse over this map and quickly identify resources, etc. This was an invaluable tool in deciding how I wanted to lay out my city. Does such a thing exist in CotN? I'm getting kind of sick of not finding I have a Basalt Quary (or whatever resource) until several years into the game. Mouse scrolling the entire map doesn't do it for me.

A trick that mouse taught me in an older post was to pick an overseer's house while pause at the beginning of the game. Right click on it and you will see a list of available Overseer tasks, then you know you have Gold or Emeralds or Limestone to go find.

After you are done, just click the undo button.

Yes, the overseer trick works. In regards to Pharaoh, otoh, I clearly remember having to count individual tiles of resources before I knew what my city was capable of. I'm sooooo glad we don't have to do that anymore.

Theoretically is is possible to identify resource sites on the mini-map. However, you might go blind trying to do it...

Yeah you would think something as large as a quarry would stick out like sore thumb on the mini-map. That said ... CotN is light years faster than Pharaoh when it comes to the planning stage.

Tyveil: Mouse-scrolling over the entire map is the only solution I've found.

The place-an-overseer-trick is good. It will tell you IF a resource is there but not WHERE.

I've found that my whole first session on a new scenario is going over the entire nome and marking the resources, the shoreline, and potential barge landings. It's sort of peaceful and you can dream about what will go where. Often as not you end up placing your city and work areas in very good locations because your "back brain" knows where everything is now.

One time I played differently: I started right where the scenario opened, and only explored out from the core location as I built my city. As if I'd washed up on shore and had to start right where I was.

In Pharoah, I could go out to the world map and then look at the land I'm suppose to build a city on in a "zoomed out" view. I could move the mouse over this map and quickly identify resources, etc... Mouse scrolling the entire map doesn't do it for me.

The maps of CotN are larger than those of Pharaoh so they will take a little more to scroll around.

A quick way to move the view of the map is to drag the box on the mini-map with your mouse cursor around the areas of the mini-map. As you move that box the view of the main map will change in correspondence to the location of the box on the mini-map.

You can also do a click-jump type of move with the mini-map box. Click on a spot on the mini-map you want to move to and the box will jump there changing the view of the main map as well.
