Hi to all,
Well this is my first map. I have played it at least 30+ times trying to ensure all works as it should, I am certain you will let me know if it doesnt.
It is the first in a campaign I am considering. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did in making it. You have a character Grogo - The Ghoul who always whines to you, he is kinda fun. :)
Oh, please forgive the sound file -- LOL
I tried to make it sound Egyptian and I dont have the best PC recording tools.
For those who dont know
download the Bakatah.scn file into
C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\data\Scenarios
and the sound Bakatah.mp3 file goes into your
C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\data\Audio\Sounds
WARNING on Sound File Bakatah.zip
Because they dont allow mp3 uploads I named the file Bakatah.mp3 as Bakatah.zip
So just rename it from Bakatah.zip to Bakatah.mp3
If you dont want the sound file dont worry, it will work fine without it.
I judge its difficulty as Moderate I hope you let me know what you think.

I have downloaded your senario and it looks really nice, its just too stressful for me. Its not the things you have to do, its just that the raiders are not triggered by opening a site at the world map, and that does not give me enough time to get my city running. Its because im a slow builder. :D
But it works nicely and i really like it, i just dont like to be stressed. But so far every thing works perfectly.

Hi, I took a quick look at your scenario/map and it looks good. Your intro is great and makes you want to play it... I'll have to try it, though I usually prefer larger maps. Just curious... What's that strange sand-castle looking thingy in front of the limestone quarry? Can the peeps walk into that?
Karter

First I want to thank all of those who helped me in tutorials.
And the first set of raiders are a hidden camp (Libyan renegade)... the trigger is a Prestige of 17 or higher, that should allow you enough time to get a commander and a few soldiers. You cant destroy them. Once you go on the Delta Expedition, they close and join another Libyan camp where you can take care of it. From there it is pretty straight forward.
NOTE: if you go on the Upper Expedition that will allow you to build a grand Obelisk and up your prestige early on.
My intent originally was to have you make freinds with Grogo and eventually he would show you where the Libyan renegade camp was. But, decided against it, since there are plenty of other things to worry about.
And if you are a slow builder that is the key to very beginning.
The square thingie was an accident LOL
As I said it was my first map and I had almost everything all done and screwed up. So instead of trying to remove it, I decided to just leave it and try to make it look like something used to be there and was eroding. Maybe Osiris was playing in the mud and started a sand castle and lost interest. :)
Thank you for the comments.

Since your hint on how to build slow without being overrun with raiders, i have been playing your senario again. It work beatufully and i really like it.
I only have two comaplaints, but im not sure you can do anything about one of them.
1. theres too few villagers. Ive been lacking villagers trough most of the game.
2. I seem to have a problem with my city guard commander. He will only leave the house to shop, but not to patrol the city. I tried to delete him and make a new, but same result.
Even with these problems i can still play the senario without problems. Im quite a bit into it, and the lack of villagers hasnt ruined my city.
So really nice senario.

I originally had 160+ villagers and when I played I only used 100 of them and did the whole scenario with only 6 nobles, so I decided to reduce the amount of villagers. It was just a judgement call, I suppose I could add some more.
I added a snapshot on my original post you can click on that and see how I layed out my city, as an example.
And the commander, the way that works is you need to build at least 2 military equipment shops. One for armor and one for weapons, your guards dont like to patrol or fight without equipment. So even before I create a commander I build the equipment shops and the guard post. You will find as you go on, an army commander, once they have trained spearman, chariteers, etc. that those men will actually go and fight raiders, almost better than the city guards.
I think it works that way, I am still not exactly certain how it all works.
When I play the scenario, I create a city commander that has 10 city guard barracks and 2 guard posts, that way you have enough men to alternate and watch both areas. Later on you can switch some of the city guards to become archers or spearman, etc. But raiders, dont really cause alot of problems, what I found most important were shrines. For some reason, these people really love their gods.
I am glad you have enjoyed it thus far
:)

I had build military shops and all the city guards had both armor and weapons. Its proberly just a bug.
I just finished the senario and i did get by even without the extra villager. The reason i needed them was because i had a lot of failed floods in the beginning,so i needed more farms to have enought food.

01-13-2005, 03:54 PM
I did the scenario with 8 nobles and around 30 villagers left. I did not go very fast so I could build without problems. I enjoied the scenario and it works very well.
Karter
01-13-2005, 03:56 PM
LOL I confirm those failed floods, for whatever reason, it seems as though the floods failed 75% of the time, I actually had to add rich flood triggers to keep things at a reasonable pace. Maybe, because many of the sites require food it causes it to act a certain way.
As I said earlier, I am not certain as to how all things work
:(

Nice scenario, very interestiing and flows well.
I got my city to a self-running point and then just did Build-and-bash with the army.
I did experience a couple of raids where the raiders simply walked through the center of town and left. They walked right past the Palace and (in one case) down the road all my Nobles shared.
I had all the requirements done and only had a Prestige of 65. That was because, for some stupid reason, I thought the Granite Quarry was across the river, so I had to mine emeralds and open Lachish (I got my Chariots ready-made through trade). Only to discover that I could have had all my Obelisks built and carved by the time my first one showed
I didn't have any problem with Villagers, had plenty available. 58 IIRC

I noticed the raids like that too. I had one raid where they by-passed the city entirely. I have no idea, whats up with that, or if I am supposed to add some other parameters.

Nice scenario Karter!
I enjoyed playing it and liked the personal touch with the Grogo character. :)
Thanks for using the 'random' function when you added the terrain features. I like the plants and trees to look 'real.' My computer thanks you for keeping the map at a reasonable size also!!! It never bogged down at all with your map. Nice job! :D
Karter
01-24-2005, 08:57 AM
Thank you NumakNatut III
I have likewise enjoyed your maps.
It is very interesting to see how people build their cities, yours obviously is setup entirely different than the way I structured mine. LOL I think yours looks better :)
I am workiing on the sequel. I am/was hoping to have a 4 map Campaign.
In the next one, you meet up with Ej'baara The Beast, it so happens to turn out that he is the brother to Grogo. Though, he doesnt speak highly of his brother. Sibling rivalry, I suspect :)
but I am having a little trouble with it, It all centers around an elaborate irrigation system you have built and one of the criteria was to acquire 5000 food.
However the food function apparently doesnt function properly :(
While you can test for wheat, barley etc. as a combined unit it appears as though it doesnt/cant add the totals together. We will see what happens.
Again thanks for the comments.
Raccoon_TOF
01-29-2005, 05:35 AM
I believe there is a way to test for 5000 food in the city, perhaps using a combination of player "variants" variables, attached to objects defined as granaries / bakeries with the required totals stored in them, and a series of triggers. However, if you want a simple solution, just add a site on the world level that requires 5000 food to open, and then have your victory trigger require that site to be activated. You could name it something simple like "Famine Storage Granary" or the like, depending on the storyline of the scenario...

Hey Karter
Thanks for the nice scenario. I enjoyed it. I see you made prestige not as easy to get but loved how you had all the resourses on the same side of the river(My overseers are tired of schlepping their sandals from one side of the map to another! )Looking forward to your next one. Thanks again.

How do I take in-game screenshots?Next to the game options and scenario info buttons, in the lower left of the game screen, there's a button that looks like a sun (circle with three lines coming down from it). Click on this to take a picture. You can also press the F9 key or Print Screen key. If you want a picture without the interface for the game, press Shift+F9. The pictures will be in the snapshots subfolder of the Children of the Nile folder on your hard-drive.

Hello Karter,
Hopefully we haven't lost you... I see your last log-in is over three months ago.
A very enjoyable little scenario... nicely done world map, etc. I appreciated being able to complete it in one sitting (17 game years.) I'm getting ready to play your sequel now.
Note the stone carver... He didn't mind living in the pit one bit. :)

I haven't quite finished the scenario yet. I've accomplished everything on the map. Now I'm just hanging around building stuff to get my prestige level up. I had 95 prestige just a little while ago and built a sphinx and my prestige went down to 81. curiouser and curiouser.
I've enjoyed the challenge. I like the map and the fact that most everything I need is on it even if it's very difficult to get enough prestige to have the overseers you need. That adds to the challenge, but it requires a lot of vigilance. I'm adding a snap of what my city looks like before I get to the end.
Thanx for all the work that went into this. I've enjoyed playing it very much.

I finally finished this very enjoyable scenario. I'm posting my final screenshot of the city after the winning screen came up. For some reason, probably my complete lack of knowledge, I couldn't take a snap of the winning screen so I could post it too. Is there a magic way of doing this that I don't know about?
At any rate, I enjoyed the challenges of this scenario and have downloaded the sequels and look forward to playing them. Keep up the excellent work.
Thanks Karter! I enjoyed this scenario very much. It was nice and easy, and I had enough to do all the time (haven't played CoTN after last summer). :o :p :D

I've enjoyed this one very much as it suits my fast building style. I love the extra touches and characters you include in your scenarios as well as the unusual challenges that the original game didn't think of. I hope you keep building more because i enjoy playing your scenarios much more than the original game.
P.S. I still can't figure out how to take a snapshot of my win screen.

Actually, is Karter still around? Is he still making scenarios?

So I am playing through this one (VERY well done, Karter, if you are still around!) and I have also run out of villagers.
I got so into building that I forgot there were only 100 on the map. LOL
So, I think I will start again and take out a few Nobles (had 15 last time), so to help with army and labor camp creation, and I should be good.

Okay okay :)
Now I remember......
You are correct, it IS NOT a zip file ..... I just named it zip
so just rename it from
Bakatah.zip to Bakatah.mp3
The sound file is just for the opening credits...
It was my attempt at a phony Egyptian voice LOL...almost embarrassing...
I can't remember why I did it like that... I think because some people didn't know how to use WinZip (or didnt have a zip program)
But, I knew they could rename it
See the original post as to where to put the file
Sorry about the confusion....

Hi there,
This is going to sound very stupid but for some reason, when I try to download this particular zip file... I get a message saying it is not a valid file?
Now, I've downloaded quite a few user made scenarios over the years and have never had this problem... this is the first time I have encountered it. I have managed to download the other scenarios in this series and they all downloaded just fine.... except for this one.
I've tried with Mozilla, Netscape and IE... but Winzip still says the file is invalid and there is *nothing* to actually unzip?
Is there anywhere else I can get this particular file?
Thank you to anyone who helps me.

Sorry, it looks like I never downloaded the music. I can't help there. Not sure Karter still has it.
EDIT: Please note that I am NOT a Techie in any way.
I just downloaded the "zip" file & it wouldn't open for me either. Soooo, I reread post #1 AND #51. Apparently it is NOT a zip file. I renamed it to Bakatah.mp3 & changed the download type from "zip" to "all files" BEFORE I did the second download. It came out as an mp3 file. I transferred it to my COTN Sound folder & it works! I just got through testing it. It is only a voice file repeating the words on the Scenario Info screen.
(I might have had the same problem when I first dled it waaay back then, & gave up & am a bit more experienced now. Karter said it wasn't necessary to play the scenario.)
We probably need clarification from Karter or Keith to test with this new info. :)
Keith
04-23-2007, 09:09 PM
Yep, I didn't see that it was actually a renamed MP3 file.
You don't need it to play because its jsut the briefing audio that is supposed to play at the start of the mission. You should have the briefing text which is all you really need in the SCN file.
I found voice on the MP3 a bit hard to understand because of the amount of the echo used.

Sort of necro'ing this thread but catching up on player scenarios and I recalled your campaign from way back.
Very fun scenario ... I liked the feeling of all those resources and having to balance focus'ing vs getting spread too thin. My city was a bit unstable in the mid ages since I went for more 'look' than normal ...

Hey gang,
Just completed this level and loved every minute of it. Spent the whole of a wet and windy Sunday afternoon in London (and most of the evening) playing it. Took a while to drag my prestige up but I got there in the end. The lack of a grand obelisk import site meant that by the time I had quarried one, the prestige from it had plummeted! I probably should have settled for the stele import and stockpiled them instead. I'll try that next time.
Keep those scenarios coming:)
Eddie
