I gotta think that fluctuates depending on who's in charge. ;)

I lived in D.C. for 14 years and really miss that Obelisk now that I'm back in Texas.
Don't get me wrong... I do enjoy seeing all the cows around here. But I'm not exactly tempted to go out and make a pair of leather and rush sandals! :D

Apart from that one, where can you see other obelisks? The only one I've ever seen was in Istanbul, outside the Sultanahmet Mosque. It was raided/presented (depends on who's telling the story) ages ago to the Byzantines and has been there ever since.

I believe that Paris and I think also London have Egyptian obelisks on public display. These were taken from digs in Egypt and not a pseudo-obelisk like the one in D.C., which one can actually go inside and to its top. It is an obelisk in shape, but that is about it.

Theres bits of Egyptian stuff(tm) all over europe, especially Rome, France and UK which had bouts of Egypt-mania over various times. A lot the Roman structures are "inspired" by Egypt, the Brits in our usual way just nicked anything we liked the look of. Theres an Obelisk in London (Cleopatra's Needle) and you'll find Egyptian artifacts in a lot of museums around the place, especially in London.

Ok, ok so it's a wooden matchstick obelisk that's only 13 inches tall....but it did make me an "A" in physics. :D :D :D

Off in a somewhat backwater section of NYC's Central Park is an actual Egyptian obelisk. The history of this obelisk seems to be that it was one of 2 erected at On by Thutmose III. Sometime between 23 BCE and 12 CE Romans transported these obelisks to Alexandria and set them up in front of the Caesarium. These obelisks became known as "Cleopatra's Needles", although there is no direct connection. Sometime in the early 14th Century CE, an earthquake toppled one of them. Pause for a moment to ponder a 200-ton monument that stood in one place for 15 centuries, was moved, and then stood in the new location for 14 centuries. Then take another moment to ponder the one that didn't topple and stood for another 5 1/2 centuries. In 1877 Khedive Ismail Pasha offered Cleopatra's Needles to both New York City and London (the offer may have been made to other cities as well). New York originally demurred, and London accepted only the toppled obelisk. Two years later, New York decided it would not be outdone and accepted the one that was still standing.
After arriving in New York, it took 16 pairs of horses to haul the obelisk from the Customs house to its current position.
