How to embed images in your posts
You have an image you want to embed in your post, but not as an attachment. For example a signature image or animated smiley.
First, the image must already be loaded on a web site, for example your personal free space site or a game site somewhere.
Second, put the image URL between tags in the body of your message.
Example:
First, I have a Diana avatar hosted here: http://www.fengshuichat.com/sitearm/images/diana_10.jpg (http://www.fengshuichat.com/sitearm/images/diana_10.jpg)
Second, I code it in the body of my message like this: http://www.fengshuichat.com/sitearm/images/diana_10.jpg
And the result is:
http://www.fengshuichat.com/sitearm/images/diana_10.jpg
A simpler way from Keith
On the menu above where you type your message you just click on that yellow square icon the one with the black "mountains" on it. When you hover over it is says "insert image." Then just enter the URL of the place you stored the image you want displayed. This will display the image and in the message body unlike attachments.
Caveats
The image displays only so long as the original web link is valid. Otherwise the image will show X.

Four Steps...
1. Compose a picture in your game*
. Run the game until the time of day you want (evening, midday, sunrise, moonrise etc.)
. Put the game on pause <p>
. Turn the interface view OFF
. Scroll and zoom around until you like the view (consider all points of view... god's eye in the sky, up close and personal, in the city, outside the city, people and animals, landscape and sky, humor, scenic, things you like, bugs, etc.)
2. Take the screenshot
Remember to UNSELECT all objects (no green or blue halos or conversation bubbles) UNLESS you want them highlighted in the shot
If you want EVERYTHING included, including the interface, then...
. Leave the interface ON
. Press <f9>
If you want ONLY THE PICTURE, not even the little miniinterface icon, then...
. Press <shift><f9>
If you have an item selected, and you don't want the glowline in the shot (occurs when press <shift>), and it's ok to have the little miniinterface icon, then...
. Turn the interface OFF
. Press <f9>
3. Edit the screenshot (optional)
. Use Windows Explorer to locate your screenshots in this directory:
...C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\snapshots
. Select View Thumbnails to see the images
. Double-click the images to expand and view them as needed
. Pick the images you like best
. Sort them in the order you want to show them, and renumber and rename them with descriptive titles (leave the extension as .jpg tho')
. If you have an image-editing program, add text, diagrams, cartoon bubbles etc. Or stick your face on the pharaoh statue... whatever
4. Post the screenshot
On CotN or Fansite forums you need to be registered (free) with user id and password
Screenshots are located in: C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\snapshots
If you want to post your shots in a Tilted Mill Official Forum, then...
. Open a new post
. Type your message
. Click on "Manage Attachments" button
. Use Browse to locate and select your snapshots
. Upload them in order you want them to be seen
. Submit the post
If you want to post your shots in a CotN UserSet, then...
. Go to the CotN main web site (http://www.immortalcities.com/cotn/) and click on UserSets
. Log in (you have to log in again the first time, even if you're already logged into the Forum)
. You will see the links "[create]" after you are logged in
. Chose either StorySets create or SnapSets create
. Name your overall set (set names are easy to edit later)
. Upload the first picture
. Add the remaining pictures in the order you want them to be viewed (picture order is hard to edit later)
. Add captions... they add a lot and build your writing and creative skills! (captions are easy to edit later)

Not a trick but wisdom,
Do not over post... you probably know. but if you come here daily and post a COUPLE not loads but not limiting. your rank on the fourm ladder will go up, no need to troll or over argue either, [that G W Bush fourm that Ascura started lol]
anyways your rank will go up if you're patient. :D
Edit, C4 suggestions are ok what I meant to say is don't go overboard, 20 new posts in five minutes kind of thing, sure a bunch is good, but 20 in 5 minutes is overboard, suggest away. What I mean by argueing is non stopping degradement of why you are right and NOBODY else is correct... that is what i meant, keep it in friendly terms here this is a nice communtiy in comparison to War craft or sumtin like that sombody said, so nobody cares for excessive argueing, I hope were all cleared up. :D

*wonders if sitearm has mastered the edit button in effort to avoid double, triple, and quadruple posts* :D :p
Note to new posters. Two features will be your best friend. The search feature and the edit button. If you have a problem. Search first, then if necessary, post a thread or reply in someone else's. If you feel the need to answer several people at one time, you do not have to make multiple back to back posts. All you need to do is copy the relevant text and paste in your reply, if you notice there is a little speech bubble looking icon...click it, it will turn your highlighted text into a quote box like so. So you can address many points in one post without seeming like a spammer. :D

some people may not know how to use other smillies.
you just go to a site like these
http://www.bestsmileys.com/pageindex.htm (this one is the best and the one I used in the example)
http://www.clicksmilies.com/index.html
and when you want to convey something that the smilies here just cannot do you can add some of ya own....
by copy and pasting the the text given into your message.
it will look like this.....
hello all
i think i am going mad today h ttp://bestsmileys.com/silly/13.gif
when you hit submit thought it will show the piccy instead of the text...

Observing the elusive developers in their natural habitat
Developers are a busy but shy breed, difficult to observe in their natural habitat, coding, eating cake, and occasionally reading and posting in the crazy user forums.
How does one approach these cautious creatures to observe or even communicate with them?
Step One: Identifying Developers
Developers are easily identified in the field by their black and white feather markings that look like this:
http://www.fengshuichat.com/sitearm/images/tmill_avatar.gif
Step Two: Communicating with Developers
If you have been fortunate enough to find a rare Developer Post, you may click on "Post Reply" to reply directly.
Voila!
Step Three: Communicating with Developers privately
If you need to make a private communication, for example a request to the webmaster, you may click on the Developer's Name, then click on "Send a private message".
There you go!
Step Four: A Master List of Developers
Click on "Members List" at the top of the screen.
Click on "Join Date" at the right of the screen.
Developers are all listed on the page.
Done!

Observing the elusive developers in their natural habitat
Also, to add to that, once you have spotted a developer, click his name, then "View Public Profile". On the profile page, there is a link called "Find all posts by [Name]" under the "Forum Info" section. Click and enjoy all the knowledge the developer put into the forums. :)

Version 1.1: What to do if you read a problematic post
The forums are meant to be a safe place for productive and fun discussion. A post is problematic if it contains harassment, fighting, or rude content. If you feel uncomfortable reading a post, it is problematic.
In general it's not a good idea to try to "correct" the poster in a public reply. Better options are:
Option 1:
If you do not know the poster, the safest bet is to click on the Report Bad Post icon at the top right of the post. The icon is a small, red-border triangle with a vertical black line in it. When you click the icon, a small message box appears. Type in a brief comment (e.g., "problematic", "harassment", "fighting", "rude") and then click "Send Report". The forum staff receive these notices.
Option 2:
If you think it will be productive, you may send the poster a Private Message providing your feedback. They may not have realized the impact of their words. Keep it brief.
Reflection:
I (Sitearm) cannot speak for Tilted Mill, but my personal observation is that they try to keep "hands off" unless something gets heated. By your giving them information on posts that concern you, TM may be in a better position to know if and when to do something.
It also alerts us that I or any of us may be considered a ... insert negative word here ... because what we consider OK comes across differently to some. "Turning the other cheek" is hard work... it's good to "keep a big stick handy" when you do it, just in case! In this case, "Report Bad Post" is the stick.

How do you include quotes from several threads when you would like to incorporate your answer into a single reply? Sitearm I have seen you do this very effectively. At the moment I am reduced to quoting someone to reply to one point, and then posting another reply quoting someone else to reply to theirs...
sitearm
09-26-2005, 08:54 AM
One quick way is to open multiple browser windows for quick copying and pasting:
1. Click "Post Reply" to start a new post.
2. Get the first user's quotes...
....A. Open a new browser window
....B. Open the first user's post
....C. Click "Quote" to open a quoted reply
....D. Highlight ALL the text from ... blah blah blah... to ...
....E. Copy it to your new post
3. Get the second user's quotes...
....A. Open a new browser window
....B. Open the second user's post
....C. Click "Quote" to open a quoted reply
....D. Highlight ALL the text from ... blah blah blah... to ...
....E. Copy it to your new post
4. Edit your new post (add your words; select which words to keep from user1, user2; etc.)
5. Preview your post and correct as needed
6. Submit your post
NOTES:
1. If you do not see a quote box it's easy to fix. Edit the post again and make sure the quote tags ( ... ) are correct. The most common problem is losing one of the square brackets ([ or ]) when copying or editing. Add them back and you're in business.
2. There are other ways but this way assures you are quoting exactly what the other users said.
How do you include quotes from several threads when you would like to incorporate your answer into a single reply?... At the moment I am reduced to quoting someone to reply to one point, and then posting another reply quoting someone else to reply to theirs...

Version 1.1: How to see Who's Online
1. Go to the Tilted Mill Community screen where all forums are shown (if you're not already there, click on the "Tilted Mill Community" link at the top of the screen).
2. Scroll to the "What's Going On?" section at the bottom of the screen.
3. Click on "Currently Active Users"
4. You will see a "Who's Online" screen that shows members and guests who are currently online.
Benefits:
Seeing "Who's Online" can be handy for several reasons:
. It's fun being part of a group experience. Energy is often very high when a lot of users are in the forum. "The more the merrier", as they say.
. You can PM (private message) or IM (instant message) a buddy, knowing they're there and likely to respond.
. You can see what threads and posts others are reading, that you may have missed, and check those out too. As of Oct.05 there were over 5,700 threads and 65,700 posts!
Identify Privacy:
Sometimes, for whatever reason, you may wish NOT to be observed as being online:
. For Guests this is not an issue. Your activity is visible but your identity is not.
. For Registered Users, you may go to your User CP (Control Panel) and check Edit Options - Use Invisible Mode. Your ID will now show with an asterisk: MyUserName*, indicating that your ID is not visible to others.
. Don't forget to turn off Use Invisible Mode if you want your buddies to know you are online.

If you use Sitearms method and have a few windows open, but to various different search engines, instead of other posts, you can also use this to copy and paste different pieces of relevant text and links, by highlighting the text/link/address you want to include, then press Ctrl + C to copy the text, then click back to your post and press Ctrl + V to paste it into your post. This is handy for little snippets of text or for links to entire websites.

Experienced and fast-learning forum members use Private Messaging in addition to Reading and Posting Messages.
Private Messaging is good for one-on-one feedback or discussion, including arranging to get together separately by email or chat to work on a project. Private Messaging is not subject to search engine crawlers.
Reading and Posting Messages is subject to public search engine crawlers. What you post will be available for years. Use "Edit" or "Edit - Delete Message" if this concerns you regarding any of your messages. (sample search: "tilted mill forums [your user name here]". Click on "[More results from www.tiltedmills.com]" or "[More results from www.immortalcities.com]" links)
Recommended User CP (Control Panel) Settings:
Enable Private Messaging: .................................ON

Version 2.0: What to do if you read a problematic post
The forums are meant to be a safe place for productive and fun discussion. A post is problematic if it contains harassment, fighting, or rude content. If you feel uncomfortable reading a post, it is problematic.
In general, it's better to try to correct the situation privately rather than publicly. Private options include:
The forum staff receive these notices and, if enough are received, will tend to do something about them.
Option 2:
If you think it will be productive, send the poster a Private Message providing your feedback. They may not have realized the impact of their words. Keep it brief. If they reply in a rude manner, do not attempt this option with them again. See Option 1.
Reflection:
My personal observation is that Tilted Mill try to keep hands off unless something just gets too heated. By giving information on posts that concern you, their staff may be in a better position to know if and when to do something.
What one of us considers OK to say in public or in private may come across differently to someone else than was intended... or perhaps not. "Turning the other cheek" is hard work... it's good to "keep a big stick handy", just in case. "Report Bad Post" is the handiest way to express concern and move on.

[posted in the spirit of Bizarro World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bizarro) ;D]
Version 3.0: What to do if you read a problematic post
The forums are meant to be a place for violent confrontation and drama arousing satisfyingly intense emotions of rage, righteousness, shame and anger. A post is problematic if it contains niceness, tolerance, useful information, or willingness to accept other points of view. If you feel comfortable reading a post, it is problematic.
In general, it's better to correct the situation immediately and publicly. Public options include:
Option 1:
If you do not know the poster, ridicule the content immediately. If you do know the poster, also ridicule the poster. Try to pick words that will infuriate or embarrass in the fastest, deepest way possible. Type in a brief comment (e.g., "no", "wrong", "idiotic", "ill informed") and then click "Submit Reply". The forum members will all receive these replies and be delighted.
Option 2:
If you think it will be productive, immediately post a reply on any topic other than what the poster said. If they reply in such a manner as to stay on their original topic, do not attempt this option with them again. See Option 1.
Reflection:
By having hilarious thread jacks and marvelously dramatic forum fights, most of us can feel satisfyingly better off at the expense of only a few poor souls. It's worth it!

Hee Hee Hee lol Sitearm. Like the colours too. :D

Is this some sort of secret club? Can anyone join and where do you sign up for it? Do you all have a leader? And what do you do in this club? AND *ack! Stops to catch breath for a mo* Even though us mere mortals down here on the lowly "online members list" can't see you, you can see us, SO!! My Number 1 burning question is this.....
Can you all see each other? http://www.fengshuichat.com/sitearm/smileycon_images/13.gif http://www.fengshuichat.com/sitearm/smileycon_images/15.gif http://www.fengshuichat.com/sitearm/smileycon_images/10.gif
And more to the point, what are you all doing back there? Is it... umm.. you know.. naughty? *giggles* Can we join you? http://www.fengshuichat.com/sitearm/smileycon_images/4.gif
Why don't you come and join, you'll see yourself then! ;) :D
