Hi everyone. I'm a fan of games like Caesar 3, Zeus, Emperor, Pharaoh, Simcity and so on. I was looking at the screenshots and features of Caesar 4 and i though of a detail that is missing in many of these games. It's unrealistic that when you place a building it apears instantly. Buildings should take time to construct like in real life. What do you think?

That's what i thought was missing in the CB series as well. It should just continue the way it is in CotN: the builders haul materials there, an when they're all there, someone builds it. BUt i think there should be MORE than one builder per building... please... poor bricklayer when he built the Cult Temple! ;) , poor stone carver having to finish the Great Pyramid by himself! :eek: I got tired just to watch them!

And welcome to the family, mad_genius! :)

Welcome.

There are several threads discussing various types of construction ideas in the Caesar IV section. I know I've seen this suggest at least once or twice before. I'm hopeful that they will use something along the lines of the "Children of the Nile", their previous game, model where the homes are constructed by a resident or worker. Depending on the time scale the game uses a more detailed construction rising slowly may or may not be possible.

In general a lot of us would definitely like to see more construction in the game, especially the large public monuments, roads, and other public buildings.

Like Keith I recall having this discussion before, but it is a worthy point and bears repeating.

There are several other computer games where contruction is shown, rather than the building automatically appear. It can even add a certain tension if you need a certain type of building to defend your frontier. A good example of construction graphics is "Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth".

is it safe to say that the construction style of cotn may be copied?

Or at least similar in concept.:)

I also like AoE III's deconstruction of buildings where if you pound a building with artillery or just shoot at it little bits fall off and it takes a while to demolish it completely.:)

I think COTN is a good model of construction, since buildings do not appear from the blue, but do not take a too long time to grow (exept cult temple, which is reasonable).

Maybe in C4 there could be some sort of "construction teams" with several builders that would work together to construct the buildings. The city would have to have some "constrution headquarters" to employ builders.

However, how can the headquarters appear before the constrution teams, right. :p
Maybe when we start a city, people would start slowly by building their how houses and a primarly headquarter to start an unexperienced team. As time passes and education improves, the headquarters would "evolve" (or be "evolved" by us :D ) to create more experienced teams.

Or maybe some of the inhabitants could some sort of "specialised people" like in civilization games.
For example, you are commanded to start a new settlement on some location and you start by alocating some houses. As people arrives to ocupy the houses you could receive a message telling you that there are a certain number of builders (Special people) among your immigrants that offered themselves to build a basic headquarters to start educating other people about their profession. That way teams would be created and the city could start to develop normaly.

There would be different types of special people to help the city in many ways.

The Builder - crutial to start a city;
The Teacher - good for starting schools or academies;
The General - would allow you to start training your military;
The Scientist - some people have talked about research. He would be the one starting it;

I cannot think of more for now. But maybe this is just an impratical idea. What do you think folks?

Private citizens could stilll build their own houses, but most of the initial public buildings could be done by soldiers. As the city expands, building could also be accomplished by more "traditional" methods such as bricklayers, stone masons, etc.

I dunno. Personally I think it took too long to make the buildings, especially in the beginning of the scenarios where you had to wait for the palace and whatnot to be built. Also, if your builders are a long ways off it is troublesome waiting for them, especially if you need to get this building done in order to move on to something else. It just took too long, and I would sacrifice realism for speed any day.

i wonder if this time building construction would require additional materials besides concrete?

That will depend on the buildings of course. Patrician housing might require paint for the frescos and perhaps marble. Government buildings might require marble. All construction might require wood. Timber will be far less scarce than in CotN anyway, Europe still had massive forests back then.
