is it just me or does it seem that you should be able to punish people and act somewhat like a dictator.

Punish people if they commit a crime. Act like a dictator was something really common in Rome (I guess every 10 emperors, 8 would be crazy dictators). so yes, let us rule prohibitively with the people. Burn the whole city down if needed!

You said it right. Being a dictator was something common on emperors. But we play the role of governors not emperors. Governors cannot be dictators if they expect people to move to the city and develop it.

So we can't go on rampage and slaughter the whole people? :( Just because you're not the Emperor? :( I personally wouldn't do that but often it would be cool to save the game, kill everyone for fun and then load back and play it normally.

As I understand it we are governors as mentioned above. So it would be doubtful that we would be given carte blanche to do what we will to our people.

The people could rise up and kill the 'dictator' if he got too abusive.
The 'mob' was something even for the mighty Emperor to be wary of.
And for a governor who exceeds his authority (proconsuls had the imperium - the power of life and death, but not the right to destroy something that there were only delegated to manage).

what if the senate gave us total control over everything within the city. in acutal roman times governors had the power to be dictators without all the military privialges.

Abuse....
Raise taxes to get money now, but unless you build infrastucture with it etc..
you waste it and lack of reinvestment in businesses causes you economy to go down, resulting in a smaller tax base in future.
Taxing the rich (who do that reinvesting thingee) to buy off the cities parasites (who dont generate wealth) may gain short term political gain, but result in smaller economy and attracting more parasites....
Too many public employees for too little need, handsitters being paid instead of working at real jobs and generating wealth.
Overtaxation for self aggrandizements hampering small businesses, putting them out of business and onto the dole.
Remember, more than one Emperor (even the senate in republican days) were driven out of power by the people when they were too abusive or incompetant.

So much republican BS & so little time, Woody...
The separation between the high end ("rich") & the low end ("parasites") is what makes governments fail. It is a numbers game. Such failed governments need the iron fist of dictatorships or the lies of fascism to retain power.
Fair profits by those to actually make products & provide services over rich investors who actually do no work at all is what makes the world turn. Investors & inheritors need to be taxed highly, while workers need to receive a fair wage cuz they are the ones who buy the products that make business rich.
Question
Why do businesses need welfare at all? I thought you republicans believe business owners were the "better" & "smarter" people?
President Clinton raised taxes immediately after taking office. It led to the longest period of economic expansion in modern times. It was across the board, not only the rich prospered.
republicans have nothing but HUGE debt. They are economic disasters. Supply-side economics is a proven failure. It does raise all boats, but only the rich have boats.

Mr. Duffy, this belongs in the outside world. Parts of it do anyway.
Obviously make the observations you think are relevant to history, but don't editorialize.
Thanks.
PS- Woody, please be advised as well.

Agreed. All of it does. However, Woody made a political post that I could not allow to stand. Probably way too much of a response, though.
Sorry, Jeff, I've been slipping a bit lately.

I liked simcity because after you build your thriving (and for me blindingly beautiful) city I like to save off the game add unleash all of mother nature's fury upon it. Im one of those special children who love to make somthing and then smash it, I always was that way For me that's half of the fun. so I would like to see somthing like that in civ, like a volcano (pompeii) an earthquake
or locusts!!!:D maybe even a tidal wave. this would make the game even more enjoyable for me and other peeps too im sure..... and people who don't like the idea dont have to click on them.
Im sure this has been mentioned before but I thought it could fit here...somehow:confused: ... and so I posted it (too change the mood)
and as for me maybe I should see a theropist:p
