View Full Version : Good news for TM about 'other' game

One of the other 'build a roman city' games coming out this June is being published by Enlight. You know, Enlight. The people who use Starforce.

Personally, I'd buy any number of city-builders if they were good games. It's not a 'one or the other' thing for me. But since I do not buy starforce-infected games, I'll scratch this one right off the list. I think a lot of people will do the same....

-MB

PS: I haven't heard much about the 'sim-city' Roman game, but I thought it was coming out soon, this summer maybe? It seems pretty quick to be releasing something we just heard about. I'm keeping an open mind, but I think 'C4' is the one worth waiting for...

C4 I will probably pre-order and that's a big thing for me. Anything else I'll wait and see what others braver or dumber than I am think of the game.

What's that "starforce"?

What's that "starforce"?
A miserable degenerate little security feature on their disks (but not all of them) that causes major problems for many legitimate costomers sometimes they can't install the games and I heard that some times it screws up your computer! BAH:mad:

Jodet, didn't you already create a thread for your rant against Starforce? I'm sure you did.

As I said in the other thread, the copy protection used is more than likely not up to TM. It's their job to develop the game itself. Copy protection is added later once marketing gets ahold of it. More than likely this game like all the others from VUG/Sierra and TM will use SecuROM.

Does someone know if Starforce messes with the installation of Norton anti-virus? just bought Norton 2006 but can't install it (spent 5 hours trying) and i have a game with starforce on my laptop (i also removed the game but still no luck with Norton)

Sorry, don't know if Starforce affects Norton installation but I haven't come across that as a Starforce related problem.

Uninstalling the game isn't enough to get rid of Starforce from your pc. You might like to have a read here how to detect and effectively remove Starforce from your pc : http://www.glop.org/starforce/remove.php

but I know Norton messing with a lot of things... I changed to another and more efficient one long ago... ;)Agreed, I got a new laptop about a week and a half ago, preloaded with Norton, which I have never used before, but it seriously grated on my nerves and lasted two days before it got slung out and replaced with the same program I use on my big PC *sighs happily* all is calm at my desk now :)

@ Schmophit

next to the available "Starforce-remover" there is also a "Norton-Remover" exisiting. Mind you though......it does not get all Norton/Symantec-stuff out, but the most important.
It is worth searching the regggy for norton & symantec after the tool, cos there is still plenty o`muck left.:p

Regards :)

To Schmophit & King Faticus,

the official Norton-removal-tool from here:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html

As far as I remember it can "only" delete the (still) fully installed Norton. (do read the read-me which comes with it)

By the way..............it is nothing "illegal" but is made by sym itself.
Over 50 000 downloaders can`t be wrong!

I have helped two users so far to clean out reggy by hand with the leftovers from N-Sym. It did last some time and still plenty coming...........

Regards

If you uninstall Nortons, a good registry cleaner should find any registry entries left over for it. Try RegSeeker, that I pointed out in the other thread "Free handy registry cleaner program (http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8078) ", or the one Manni suggests. Even if they don't get all the Norton entries it beats doing it all by hand.

Even though I was having no issues at all with Starforce and it had been quietly residing on my hard drive for more than year, I went ahead and used the removal tool and got rid of it and didn't suffer any problems as a result.

Make a restore point of your system first. Then export a backup copy of your registry. If anything does go wrong that should get you back to where you are.

Run the registry cleaner. If you use RegSeeker, the one I mentioned in that thread (see thread for images of program) check the box on the bottom of the RegSeeker menu that makes a backp of all the things it finds.

You can delete any registry entries and keys one by one once the program has scanned through. You just right click on the one you want to delete then seleted delete or you can delete all the items with the Select all function and then delete.

I had not cleaned my registry in the two plus years that I've had this sytem and I had way way more than the average 500 entries they say the normal user will find. RegSeeker found over 3000 entries in my registry. I scanned down the list of items it identified, made sure they weren't anything I really needed and the deleted them all. I still have the backup file RegSeeker made if I need it and the backup of my registry.

I haven't had a problem yet.

Ah Manni, KF is very very brave when it comes to throwing things at MarkDuffy. Try to convince him that this reg cleaning business is not any more difficult than that. :p :D
(Even I'm doing it constantly, the reg cleaning thingie I mean. :) )

Hmmm - but there's a big difference between swotting MD and wiping your registry off the computer. * Thinks - there must be a joke there somewhere - What's the difference between swotting MD and ...........? Goes away to think about it*

Maucat here you go lol http://www.cosgan.de/images/more/bigs/a025.gif http://www.cosgan.de/images/more/bigs/a043.gif but done lovingly (?:D ) as KF does.

I do my registry cleaning nicely with a software and my laptop loves me, never giving me troubles so far. (More like me giving it hard time while editing too many too big photos.)

You forgot to mention to then check run all your applications/computer functions immediately to see if anything is broken (reboot...).

I LOVED Caesar III and it would be really awesome if I could get the next one. I've got 64mb of integrated graphics... wondering if this would be enough (I'm not particular on running any game on low or high graphics, I know my computer stinks).

?

King has Norton? Hahaha. Piece of trash.

I have never cleaned my registry that I know of. What's a registry? Is that computer stuff?

and the image of me is a box with an x in it, probably from my security setting, so there!

I also lost smilies on MSN messenger & know not how to fix it. I'm keeping my security on KEEP OUT, so don't offer any help. :p

:D

(Damn, after hitting post, the image came up this time! )

EDIT: Finally tripped over the solution. Somehow I turned smilies off. Used the TOOLS section to turn them back on. Blind squirrel found the nut! :o

That "other" Roman game financed by Enlight and published by CDV will NOT use Starforce. After the public brouhaha about Starforce CDV have decided against using it on their future titles.

Are enlight folks who created Imperial Glory?

That game's not bad and battles are good...
not a Cbing of course but not so bad, even better than Total war in my opinion, quite light and fun.

Enlight made Seven Kingdoms (I think that was the title). That was a good RTS. Starforce is not being so their new title might be of interest. Still Heart of Empire Rome would be a liklier purchase if that and the Enlight title were side by side on the shelf. The Tycoon series has provided me with a fine gameplaying experience. That said the Enlight game does look very interesting. I wonder how they will interpret citybuilding. Overall having three or so Roman citybuilders to choose from is not the worst of dilemmas:) .

Seven Kingdoms II was one of those lesser-known gems. It was great, but kind of felt incomplete (several features in the game don't seem to work correctly). :)
