Anyway, I can't install a driver at work, so I'll wait 4 more hours before I can do it at home.

Thanx also Keith for the screenshots; the second group has pics that reminds me sooooo of beloved :) C3:)

Also a lot of roads, makes me say that they must play a role on people's come and go and that people maybe can't go where they want as they did in COTN?

The circus is alot bigger than it looked in the screenshots:)

I am a bit worried about the exaggerated "look" the later Patrician houses have:(

Sweet, I'm happy there seems to be those funny worker animations in there still, always love those :P

Only thing that might disappoint me are the nice, but empty roads. I never liked having nice tiles or perfect roads before anything is there (as in CoTN). Prefer that they upgrade like the buildings (dirt path, cobbles, paved etc.) as that just adds to the evolving city feeling for me. Wish they could base them on usage or surrounding wealth.

That's a good idea.

Notice how the walkers actually used the road system?

i saw quite a lot of evolution/devolution going on there with the residential structures; worrisome?

I think we need to take into account the speed at which the city was playing - also seemed to be quite a small city (probably strictly for demo purposes only) to support what appear to be the equivalent of grand villas, so maybe when they played the city, the first thing it did was devolve!

It was revealed a while back that patrician elite housing would have 8 levels of evolution.

love the weather effects. or maybe that was just the game on high speed. either way there was diversity in weather effects.

Keith said it was hinted at before that patrician villas would have eight levels of evolution, looks like they decided to add four more:)

You're right I just counted the number of levels and there appear to be 12 levels of change in a patrician home.

I took the Gamespot mpeg file and converted it to a 50% smaller download in WMV format with a larger resolution so you can see some of the details a bit easier.

I am psyched! The graphics are stunning. I love how the buildings evolve and interact with the people living in them.:D

The road in front of the Noble Townhome doesn't change.

Disclaimer: It might mean absolutely nuthin. :D

Hmm I guess that TM couldnt figure out having the ships lower their masts (that awful 'high' bridge....)

it would seem that al varieties of housing have bin made to occupy the same surface area; pity i liked the way houses evolved in C3. I also remember reading that large insulae/taller housing were structuraly unstable, and actually less desirable. Rich people tended to live on the lower/street levels.

Certainly the richest villas in rome were known to sprawl over large areas.

Keith
06-01-2006, 01:52 AM
There were too many people that felt the opposite way, Merino. They didn't like the fact that the building footprint kept changing all the time ruining their pretty city layout. So I would not be surprised that the buildings in Caesar IV did not change in overall footprint.

Tontoman
06-02-2006, 08:02 PM
Hmm, if I remember correctly it wasn't just wrecking the pretty layout but a potential flip flop effect if you didn't have enough 'nice' surroundings. The expanding house would delete the nice tiles around it (gardens etc.), which would then cause the surroundings to be not nice enough over all, so it would devolve again until you rebuilt the missing gardens which would trigger an expansion and so on.

That was on top of having your housing expanding the wrong way and maybe blocking another house expanding. I remember placing statues (non deleteable by an expanding house) to make sure houses expanded the way I wanted them to and removing them later for the last stage.

So two issues for them to choose going the one footprint way instead ;)

To me it makes practical sense - if you own a house, when you 'do it up', you're not taking over half the neighbours as well!:D

Keith

The only people that would improve their properties would be the patricians, since most of the people in the cities lived in insulae or on tenament farms of the wealthy.

??? You mean it needs more advertising? The genre is pretty small relatively speaking, and I'm sure by now everybody who is a genre fan will have heard of it. Outside of those, however, I agree that more could be done to bring new people into the CB'ing world. Unfortunately that's up to the accountants! :)

Citybuilders are not your big advertising budget type games, because they haven't got the same size following as FPS and RTS games. However, they are popular with those that play them and people tend to remain loyal to them long after the other games are back in their case sitting on the shelves. Caesar III is 8 years old and people still play it.

More advertising would be great, but I don't think that they'll have any problem selling all the copies they make.
