Gotta problem getting the demo to run?

Post a copy of your DXDIAG.TXT file with a description of what the problem is.

Please, don't just say "it doesn't work."

Give us details on what the system is doing when the problem occurs and what the error messages say.

System requirements:

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 1.6 GHz or equivalent AMD(R) Athlon(TM) processor or higher
Windows(R) 2000/Windows XP Home or Professional (including Service Pack 2 or higher)
512 MB of RAM
64 MB video card (with Hardware T&L including Pixel Shader 1.1 or higher support)
2.0 GB of free hard disk space
CD-ROM Drive
DirectX(R) 9.0c
Mouse
Keyboard

Make sure you have the current version of DirectX 9.0c.

Microsoft makes updates to DirectX on a running basis without changing the number.

If you have had DirectX 9.0c for some time already you may need a slightly newer version.

The latest version is dated 08/08/2006 at:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx

This may cure your problems before you even ask about it.

EDIT: The demo installer will offer to install a newer copy of DirectX 9.0c if it is necessary. So accept the offer and let check your version. It updated my June 2006 version.

Info from the README.TXT file:

The Caesar IV Demo is designed to function with Windows(R) 2000/XP-compatible
graphics and sound cards. Drivers for these devices are provided
by Windows(R) itself or the respective card manufacturers and may
occasionally result in compatibility problems beyond our control.

The Caesar IV Demo does not support Windows(R) XP Service Pack 1.
Please update to Service Pack 2 before installing the Caesar IV Demo.
DirectX(R) version 9.0c April Edition and Microsoft(R) .NET Framework 2.0
are also required before beginning to play.

The Caesar IV Demo does not support Windows(R) Media Center Edition,
Windows(R) XP 64-bit Edition or Windows(R) Vista.

The Caesar IV Demo does not support Windows(R) 95, Windows(R) 98, or
Windows(R) Me since the application requires proper installation and
functionality of DirectX(R) 9.0c or higher. Microsoft does not provide
or support DirectX(R) 9.0c for these operating systems.

If you experience any problems, it is always recommended that you
obtain the latest drivers for your hardware. Driver updates resolve
the overwhelming majority of compatibility issues. Most hardware
vendors make their drivers available on their web site. If you are
unsure of a web site URL for a particular hardware vendor, you may
want to try accessing one of the popular Windows(R) software update
sites such as:

http://www.windrivers.com

Additionally, a brief list of manufacturer web sites appears below
for your reference.

Questions right away: since I don't have the newest DirectX 9.0c I want to download it too. Do I need to get rid of the older one? This new one takes care of itself once I have downloaded it?

When I try to start game it just restarts my computer and gives me a error log.

Hello.

I recently downloaded the demo of C4 and installed it fine. However, when I run it, it crashes at the loading screen when I try to enter the game proper (i.e. after I hit begin).

I note in the readme that Windows x64 is not supported. This is most likely my problem as I am running x64: can you please confirm that the demo will definitely not run under Windows x64, whether there is a workaround, and if it will be supported in the retail game.

I've refrained from attaching my dxdiag.txt because I think I already know the answer. If it should be running fine under x64 I will of course post it here.

I do hope this incompatibility is limited to the demo - I really liked CotN and would hate to miss out on C4.

konartis, your video and audio drivers are probably too old. You should update them. Your video drivers date from 2005 and your audio drivers are from 2003.

(Note: Use the Manage Attachments button below the reply window to attach the actual DXDIAG.TXT file to the message. On the attachment window browse for your DXDIAG.TXT file, UPLOAD, then close the attachment window. Then SUBMIT your message and the file is uploaded to the board with the message.)

I'm not familiar with the AMD naming regime, where does the Opteron stand in relation to the Athalon process in terms of computing power? This could be part of your problem.

You appear to have the same version of DirectX 9.0c that I do, but there is a newer version out and it may be a good idea to download and install it as well. See link above.

I just downloaded and installed the game from FilePlanet, I installed Direct X and the .net framework that came in the installer. When I click on play in the game it gives me a Visual C++ runtime error. Thanks for your help.

I am having the same problem as Nova from above. I run the game fine up to the point where I click "Begin" and the game crashes on a Visual c++ Runtime error.

Did you reboot after the the .NETFramework install?

Try disabling your virus scanner before playing.

Did you install the game from a XP user account that has Local Administrator priveledges?

You can try shutting down background applications in the MSCONFIG setup, reboot, then try the demo. START > RUN > type: MSCONFIG, under the STARTUP tab uncheck all the apps there. A reboot is required afterwards. Windows will reboot without those items. If the demo runs after that there is something on that list that is interfering with the demo program. You can re-enable each item on the startup list one by one, rebooting each time then trying the demo to find the program that might be causing the problem. You can re-enable them all if you still have a problem with them off.

Your video drivers look to be pretty new, I don't want to sugggest a newer one, but it's an option.

Your audio drivers are a bit on the old side now, dated 2005, they may need updating.

Try running the game from a lower desktop resolution. Try restting your desktop to 1024x768 or 1280x1024 isntead of the 1680x1050 you have it set for now.

I have a problem. I installed the demo fine etc. etc. everything normal, but when I run the game, the cursor (hand) appears and the music is played. But there is no image. I try to click everywhere and sometime I hear sounds like I've hit something. It's like the monitor didn't exist. My system matches the requirements.

I also seem to be getting the Runtime issue. I start up the demo, click "Start New Game" on the main menu and "Begin" on the scenario screen. The game then gives me an error message noise and freezes on the Loading screen. This error message appears:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a44/Phaethon/error.jpg

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program D:\Program Files\Sierra\Caesar IV Demo\CaesarIVDemo.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminat in and unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."

I've got the latest video card drivers and version of directX 9c.

The demo has the required DirectX drivers and will install them if you wish. I did.

Anyway thank you Keith for reminding me of them. :)

I am ready to go now...... hopefully you won't see me on this section soon. ;) :D

edit after played the demo/ Installed the game and what else came with it like DirectX.
No problems and I am using default settings of the game. BTW my laptop is almost two years old and no new drivers since I bought it.

I have updated video and audio drivers.
I am running on SLI Nvidia 7800 GTX's and I have tried both SLI and single card...neither work. I have tried every resolution possible, same error for all resolutions (tried all of both in game resolutions and desktop resolutions). I tried with all audio disabled as much as I could (you can only minimize the volume on some settings). My sound card is a Soundblaseter XFi with the latest drivers. I have performed many restarts after installation of game/drivers, etc...

I have minimal programs/tsr's running on startup.

I will try safe mode, but I am sure the results will be the same.

Any other suggestions?

Alright I have tried everything both Keith and Phil suggested and I am still getting the error (in fact in Safe Mode it wouldnt even load the menu and gave me an error in Japanese). Both harddrives are internal, my sound card is a Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer, not the newest thing around but I have had no problems with it in any other games. I checked the Nvidia site and 91.31 are the newest drivers they have, installed with an admin account, tried running with a low resolution, killed all background processes, (msconfig), downloaded a patch for .net from Windows Update, & rebooted several times. Any other ideas? Thanks :)

I've had a couple of display problems...

First, my graphics card is an XFX Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT (128mb ram). My OS is Windows XP sp2; my processor is an AMD athlon 64 3500. I'm running it on 768 mb ram.

One thing I noticed here (that I also noticed with Glory of the Roman Empire) is that the shadow maps don't draw right. Instead of drawing properly, they draw some sort of speckled gray-and-standard-color image; shadows don't work for me.

Next, reflections don't display. Whether or not reflections are _on_, they don't show themselves in the water.

I don't know if this is just my card, or my system, but there it is.

Edit: I installed the directX version that came with the demo.

Thain
08-16-2006, 03:27 PM
Yes, the 91.31 drivers are the newest, but the game may not work with them. Just as a suggestion TRY the 81.95 drivers and see if that helps. Only suggesion right now.

Sincerely,
Phil

Just so I am clear a new demo for a new game requires an older set of video drivers? Will there be a patch for the demo? I have updated everything possible for my system and still get the runtime error. I run a super clean system very few programs running in the background.

Whats the deal? I have bought all these games and am no less excited about this one but eh... frustrated and one can only work so long on getting a game to work. ^_^

I have an issue with what I assume is the copy protection (securom?). I get an error message that states:

"A required security module can not be activated.
This program can not be executed (7000)."

As you know, it's pretty much impossible for me to have an illegal or backup copy of this game since, well, it's the demo! I really wanted to play this, so I tried some anti-blacklist software as well, and it just produced a slightly different error, same text but code 5014 instead.

I know this is probably out of direct control of the developers, but I hope I can get some help on this. I'll post a dxdiag just in case.

In some cases, running the RegisterDLL.bat file found in the same directory as the Caesar IV executable (by double-clicking it) will fix the Runtime Error on startup.

I' pretty sure it's just a case of my computer not being up to standards. I'm below on processor speed, my video card is likely not supported. But I've been able to run other things where I'm below system requirements (Half-life 2 for one). On the off chance there's a fix:

I get an 'illegal instruction' error when I try to run the demo.

If there's a fix short of upgrading I'd like to know :D

Hi. I downloaded the demo anxious to try it. I entered the game, then I go to the options menu. After that I can't move the cursor anymore. I'm having demo problems, mainly with performance. My system meets the requirements, but I get massive lag during game-play. Mouse clicks don't respond, cursor movements are very slow and delayed, keyboard commands don't respond, that sort of thing. I'm able to get a decent performance with everything put right down to minimum and the interface camera to restricted, but the game view is so close in to be essentially unplayable at that point.

Attached is my DXDiag. Any help or suggestions would be hugely appreciated!

You may have a bad install. Try it again.

Your audio drivers could use some updating.

If you still have a problem, do this:

1. Right click on the Caesar IV icon on the desktop or the Caesar executable file.

2. Select Launch Analysis from the right-click menu.

3. Look in your C:\ root folder for a file called AnalysisLog.sr0. Zip that file and send it to the following email address with a description of your problem: support@securom.com.

You may have to update your NETFrame install.

You'll probably have use low video settings. Your card may not be able to keep up with game on higher settings. Try using the BEST PERFORMANCE setting in the video settings menu of the game.

@ benteln in Norway! ;)

Very interesting! This is a laptop you have with "only" Display Memory: 64.0 MB Graphics Controller..........which isn`t much to exspect with, to be honest.

Instead of Current Mode: 1024 x 768 (32 bit) try 16bit , but I haven`t got much hope. :(
Your display-driver is from 10/8/2004 . It would be woth a try to look at TOSHIBA`s if there is a "newer" one.

You have a TOSHIBA Satellite L10

Ram is also a little short.........but just about.

Try the demo on low settings, switch off virusguard and firewall and have a try again! :) Good luck!

Of Course Phil! Deadright boy! :)

Bentel can`t exspect much with such a weak machine. Even the demo is rather straining so we can hope for further "customers" when the retail-thing is out. :p

Other than that...........my ATI 9800 XT handles the demo "with one hand"......so to say :p

I'm having the same problem as Kuplo, the people and the animals are seriously screwed :D

My graphics card is ATI Radeon X1300 512MB DDR2.. I've tried setting the graphics to 1024 x 768 - 16 BIT, both in the desktop properties and in the demo itself, but it doesn't make any difference.

Everything else is just fine and works a treat :)

DXDIAG attached.

Is this an ACER-laptop or desktop?

at first try instead of Current Mode: 1280 x 1024 (32 bit)
1024x768 16bit

your graphdriver Driver Version: 6.14.0010.6587 happens to be ATI-Catalyst 6.1 from 12/1/2005 (oneandahalfyearold!!)

Try the latest ATI-Catalyst 6.7 from July 06

It's a desktop.

I was unaware that I was using an old catalyst since I did update my video driver from ATi last week. Perhaps I didnt download all of the necessary packages to update it. I've downloaded the files that ATi has listed and will try again.

Ye gods, I had no idea my hard drive was so full!

So I've cleared up 11gb worth of space, done a systems clean-up (including emptying of the temp file), turned off Windows Firewall and my anti-virus.

Loaded up the demo, set the settings way down, dropped resolution 16 bit and to a lower resolution level, left the camera at "Normal" since I need that pull-out overview distance.
There's a moderate improvement. The game is still sluggish, the scrolling is very clunky and sluggish (with the scroll speed increased, the screen will whip around, but also not stop moving when I indicate, and when a building is selected, it's even more awkward), and mouse-clicks are still not as responsive as they should be. For some reason, the buildings are rotating on mouse movement rather than the R key (for example, if I'm trying to place a building, and move the mouse, the building ghost image rotates rather than moving to the new location). Too often, I click to place a building and it doesn't respond.

I realise my system is not optimal, but it's also not that bad. So, where am I at here with the demo? Is there anything I can do, or is this normal?

@ Kuplo,

Now hold it! You say you DID install an ATI only recently!

***Perhaps I didnt download all of the necessary packages to update it***
There is only one package or you choose the driver only and CC-Center only.

I am afraid that your Acer Aspire E360 does not seem to allow the original ATI-drivers installed, which means you have to go to the acer-page and look for a driver, fitting YOUR model, there! (looks like OEM-stuff inside)

And do I have to run a Catuninstaller first? Also, do I need to disable my AVG anti-virus before doing any of this?

And yes I am a pain in the ass ( :p ) but where do I update the sound drivers from please?

Thank you Manni :)

Cleaning up was a good idea! 11 gigs of? You should have defragged straight away!!
OTHER THAN THAT.......you could do more cleaning off C by getting rid of the useless restore-points from years running XP.

I believe the bad performance of the demo is the lack of Ram... Gallifrey!

I installed the demo on 3 completely different platforms.

XPS Gen 3 Desktop
XPS M1710 special edition laptop
alienware system

On all 3 .. same problem .. loads fine click start game and plop the VB error you see 10 other people talking about on the front page. 2 of these systems are running ATI cards (ATI xt800 and xt900pe) and the other is a nvidida go 7900 top of the line , all are running the latest sound and video drivers.

Actually, and tips on how to get my drive cleaned up would be greatly appreciated, there's clearly a lot of junk on here.

When I drop the resolution right down to 800x600 16 bit, I get better performance though still with some of the glitches I mentioned before (largely hang-ups and non-responsiveness). I know 512 RAM isn't huge, but it's been perfectly fine for my gaming up until now (and I haven't just been playing Caesar III ;) ).

Thanks for the help thus far!

No, Im sorry but you are wrong in this instance. The Acer computer comes with a built in Nvidia chip. I have already long ago disabled the Nvidia chip in the bios.
The ATI card is a card that I installed myself that I bought from a local electronics store.

Anyway, I did just update the ATI drivers to the most recent version and it did take care of the grahpics abnormalities, though it did absolutely nothing to help performance issues.

Scrolling around and zooming in and out is still excessively laggy and slow. Although zooming in and out is worse than trying to move around the screen.

So updating the drivers did help and it did fix the problems of the pleebs in my city from being all messed up, but it didnt help anything as far as performance is concerned.

The only way to get what I would consider to be acceptable or even good performance is to use the settings to set everything as low as possible, although even then, zooming in and out is still slow. And of course the zoom level at that point is totally unacceptable since it's being really restrictive as the video screen informs me before choosing it ;)

Anyway, the pleeb problem went away, so thank you for telling me my drivers were outdated, updating them has fixed that.

I have tried all the different combinations of settings that I can see and the only one that gives good performance is setting everything to bare minimum. Im hoping their is another solution to this because at bare minimum the overall view is way too close and well..... Things just really dont look all that nice......

So if anyone has any solutions other than to reduce the resolution to 1024x768, then I'd love to hear them

P.S. I did just do a defrag and registry cleaning using Microsofts LiveOne online service. It cleared something like 1500 registry items that were apparently no longer in use. Ummmm, havnt noticed any improvements however in performance overall of my computer by doing so.

for a sound-driver you will have to go to the www of your motherboard manufactorer. In your case it seems to be System Manufacturer: INTEL_
System Model: D865GLC ...if I`m not wrong.
There should be a driver for your on-board-sound-chip available.

Good job done there, but HOW could I know that you`ve put some EXTRA in??

Anyway, if you have a look in your dxdiag again there should be the new Catalyst visible.
When installed it has the number 6.14.0010.6626 (this is indeed Catalyst 6.7)

In addition to what Manni said, you seem to have 2 harddrive units on your system. If the secondary is either USB or other type of plug-in unit, try disabling/disconnecting it, then try to run the demo and see if that helps.

I do want to ask a favor though. WHERE did you get your audio drivers? Just what I need. If you could provide a link where I could download them it would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Phil

Hello Phil,
I actually have 3 hard drives. The K drive is indeed a USB drive but it is not holding anything, it's a completely blank drive and no swap file or anything like that is on it.

If your talking about the realtek ac97 drivers? Then I just googled for them a couple months ago I believe. I wish I had kept the link so that I could give it to you, but I didnt see that I would need to do that. Sorry.

The only thing I'm wondering is (and I am NO computer expert so please don't laugh if this is ridiculous) my son set up both systems with partitioned HDs for me...one partition (C) for programs & one (D) for My Documents...could that be causing a problem? It hasn't for any other programs but it's the only thing I can think of that these systems have in common. One is a Dell laptop, the other a desktop. Dell is Intel, desktop is AMD.

The only problem I can see with the partitions is that the demo may not like being on a drive other than C:.

Also, if your son setup the partitions to be compressed that could be causing the problem. The demo probably needs to be installed on non-compressed volume of the hard drive.

You should uninstall your current video drivers, reboot, then install the new drivers. The computer will use the default VGA drivers it comes with during the reboot so don't worry.

My system is a Dell Dimension XPS system, 3 yrs old. Their topend machine.

I assume your are not running one of the Windows versions that the README.TXT file says the demo won't support. Basically 2000 & XP SP2 are all that is supported.

Well, good luck. I'm about to drop so I'm going to get some sleep. I've only had 2 hours rest this morning and I've been up since 10PM last night. :)

The securom people replied speedily to me, and fixed my copy protection problems! However, now I have more issues! Again, these don't appear to be driver related. First things first, I get the runtime error too. That wouldn't be a major problem, i know the fix. However, the fix doesn't work! What's happening, in addition to runtime errors, I get an error on scenario load (at the beginning of the load) that reads: "Unable to register COM interop. Message:Requested registry access not allowed." The game then crashes, and I get the runtime error and that previous error simultaneously when trying to boot the game again, preventing it from starting.

Also, when I run the fix, I get:

It registers scriptserver.dll just fine and dandy, but it doesn't register RomeScriptInterfaces.dll, and i still get the other interop error.

The fustrating thing about this is that I KNOW I have admin rights on this account. It's my only account on the PC, and it's the account where I ran the registry fix not 10 minutes ago that securom gave me, which required admin rights. This is really funky and I've never had this happen before. My DxDiag is the same as before: http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=10707&d=1155760288

I for the life of me, cannot understand why developers lately are so intent on releasing hopelessly buggy DEMOS that a *VAST* majority of people are having issues with. This certainly doesn't spell out success for the final product!

Oh, and Phil, your suggestions are mostly nonsense.. "Remove your generic CD Drive" or "Downgrade to 2 year old drivers." .. Good god, do you know ANYTHING about technical debugging?

The problem is you need to update your .NET Framwork before running it. Keith has a link somewhere in this thread. THEN try running the .bak file.

Other than that Runtime errors are because you have too many or the wrong programs running in the background, but do try the file after installing the .NET Framework update first.

Sincerely,
Phil

I've already checked before I was able to run the game, and I do indeed have the latest .net framework version. At least, the install on MS's site gives me no option to upgrade or anything, I don't know how I could tell exactly what version I have.

Machine specs below

At the lowest settings possible though the highest my XPS does not show much lag. BUT the same mouse issue occurs regardless: No sooner than I plop down a few structures, the on-screen cursor freezes - and a ghost cursor replaces it. (IE: I still get the highlight effect if I go over a button, I can click on items etc.)

My system exceeds requirements. I don't have this issue with MUCH more demanding games, I have the latest drivers etc. and I have tested this on multiple mice.

Will this be fixed in the final? The game is unplayable as is. *sigh*

Sorry, that doesn't fix the problem me and billybob, and probably 5,000 other people are having.

Obviously the demo is bugged and flawed, and probably shouldn't have been released in its current state. This doesn't seem to bode well for the full game. I can't wait for the developers to chime in and explain the fact that on every gaming forum I read, almost nobody can properly run this demo. Developers need to understand, if they can't release a solid and playable demo, they can't expect people to BUY their product.

Chill out man. Complaining like this isn't going to solve the problem :)

Besides, I think you overestimate the people suffering from these problems. I'm the first one I've seen with this specific problem, and most people who are playing fine aren't posting because they're playing!

These things happen, that's why there's a support forum. Let's just be patient and wait for a fix :).

On top of what Manni said, your audio drivers are old and should be updated.

You also have 2 harddrive unts it seems. If the secondary is a USB or otherwise non-hard-wired drive, try disconnecting/disabling it and try the demo that way. All I see right now.

Sincerely,
Phil

I finally did manage to get the newer drivers for both video and sound installed, but it hasn't changed anything. I tried unistalling and reinstalling with the firewall and anti-virus off as well, still no good. I'm about ready to conceed defeat (possibly I could put it on my dads PC, which is way better than mine)

As for the hard drive their both internal, I don't think USB. In any case the newer one is the one with all the empty space and where I have to put the demo on, so I can't disable it.

Does it matter which drive I have free space on? On my original C drive I'v only got about half a gig free, but the other one has 133 Gig left.

Some of the new games I bought need larger page files. You might check your settings on that for getting games to run better. I have XP-Pro, sp2, and discovered how to enlarge my pagefile in the help info.

Since I made it large, up to 2m, I have fewer problems in the new games I've bought.

Don't know if this helps any, but it is another thing to take a look at.

Here is my weird weird problem with Caesar IV demo. i've downloaded and installed it fine. Runned it and when the map loaded, scrolling and zooming became so sluggish that it was impossible for me to play... so i've uninstalled the demo and i rebooted my computer. As Windows has finished loading, it showed a message error about Caesar IV (i don't remember, i didn't even care as i've uninstalled it) and then i had some problems with programs, like Windows Live Messenger that freezed on sign-in (it already happened to me once, when i tried installing office pro 2003). The only way to fix the WLM is doing a system recovery (if somebody have this problem), i've done it, and now i'm nearly "afraid" to reinstall Caesar IV demo. Ok, if somebody have the same problem... and maybe the solution...

PS: sorry if my english is too bad...

Looking at your dxdiag shows that your Nvidia-card uses a very old driver:
Driver Version: 6.14.0010.6172 from 7/2/2004

You should update that with the latest nvidia-driver.

The way is:
download the latest driver and store it
go into SOFTWARE and uninstall the old nvidia-driver there
reboot.... which gets you into safe mode
a help window pops up........answer with: NO THANKS
find the place where you stored the new driver and install it
reboot and you are fine!
For controlling matters........look into your new dxdiag to ensure the new driver(number) has installed.

Good luck! Bon voyage! :)

Can I just ask what is everyone on about the cursor is 'lagging' ? Do you mean problems with the cursor itself or sluggish movement around the map?

I'm not sure if it is the same thing, but I was having trouble moving smoothly round the map at first, then I read something about freeing up the camera in the interface settings and while there I also noticed a 'side scroll' setting thingy, which I nudged slightly to the right and now the movement round the map is a LOT easier, prolly won't help everyone, but it might solve problems for some :)

And I apologise if it helps no-one and just forget I was here :D

Thanks for all the help, but I think I'm going to give up trying to get this demo running. I had my son re-format & organize both computers for me. My computers "were" all clean, organized & running great...now I'm getting worried that I'll screw something up playing around to get this game to work. (I've tried everything suggested). I guess I'll just wait to see what happens with everyone else and consider the full game when it comes out. What a disappointment though as I was SO looking forward to trying the demo...seems like it was forever coming out. :(

Can I just ask what is everyone on about the cursor is 'lagging' ? Do you mean problems with the cursor itself or sluggish movement around the map?

It's a bit hard to explain. If I adjust the "scroll speed", the map zips around when I push the cursor to the edge if I'm close-in in view (if the camera is higher up, there's massive sluggishness), but the problems occur when a building is selected (the zoom is also incredibly non-responsive - I use the mouse wheel and nothing happens, then suddenly the camera is way down or way up). If a building is selected, the cursor/building image chug along, and it's near-impossible to accurately place the building. I select the spot and click, but the building doesn't place, and often edges off in a different direction. This sometimes results in the building being placed in the wrong spot, as there's a delay on the mouse-click response. What also happens very frequently is that the building rotates according to the mouse movements. So instead of the cursor moving, the building ghost rotates.

Basically, it's a lack of proper mouse-command response, which makes the demo unplayable.

Which drive is your game installed on? You don't have enough free space on your drives, except for D: and L:. The game requires a minimum of 2.0 GB free space.

You have just under the bare minimum the game requires in physical RAM. Your system is reporting 510MB RAM not 1GB; the game requires 512MB minimum.

The audio drivers are a little old and can probably stand updating.

Right click on the Caesar IV demo icon or the Caesar IV EXE file and select the Launch Analysis from the list. Run the application. Then locate the C:\AnalysisLog.sr0 file in your root folder of the hard drive. Put it in a zipfile and attach it to a email address to support@securom.com with a description of your problem. They will examine the file and get back to you.

I'm not sure, but the MX4000 may not support DX9. I'll try to find out. DX9 support is required.

Your video drivers are a bit old and could use updating.

Your audio drivers are way too old and definitely need updating.

I have a weird problem. I don't get an error or anything it just doesn't run. I start the game it runs for a few seconds and then closes. I don't get any error and I don't get to any loading screen. The only way I know it actually starts is by using taskmanager. I have instaled the .net framework and the dx that came with the demo. My drivers are fairly new, I used forceware 91.31 and now 81.94. I uninstalled/installed the demo and .net several times. I stoped my AV and disabled my net connection etc. I've included a screen of my running processes. I had disabeled some services but enabling them back didn't make a difference.

Memory: 384MB RAM

The game requires 512MB minimum.

The game requires 2.0GB of free space to run. If you have it installed on drive C: you only have 0.8GB of free space.

The audio drivers are a tad old.

darcu

I know 512 is the minimum. But isn't it supposed to at least start with 384 mb. I would understand if the game would run badly because of the lack of ram, but not starting at all ??

@Keith: Well, it's 1GB of RAM, 2x512 running in dual channel(Windows reports only 512). I don't think that I'm supposed to have 2GB of free space AFTER the installation. I think that may be the requierment for the full game to install. Anyway...on what drive ? The one I have the demo installed on, or the drive with the page file. I don't think that that's the problem, but I'll try freeing up the disk space.

The only thing I can see to try according to your dxdiag.txt above is that you might want try running at a lower desktop resolution. Try 1024x768 just for the heck of it and see what happens.

I run a Audigy 2 sound card, which is older than yours, but I have the same audio drivers as you. No problems here in that regard.

I'm also getting an unhandled Win32 exception error when I launch the demo .exe. Installation went fine and I allowed the DirectX 9 installer to update my existing DX install (which was previously from 2/06). FWIW, I already had the .NET framework (2.0.50727) installed as well as Visual Studio 2005. I manually ran RegisterDLL.bat and verified that it successfully registered the RomeScriptInterfaces.dll and ScriptServer.dll assemblies with the .NET framework. Unfortunately, this didn't solve the problem. So I also tried the following:

- installing the 8/8/06 release of DX9.0c
- did a complete repair of my .NET 2.0.50727 install
- tried using the "Launch Analysis" from the right-click context menu of the C4 icon; the unhandled exception still occured and C:\AnalysisLog.sr0 was not created

None of these things seemed to help. I am a local administrator on this system and my hardware meets/exceeds the minimum system requirements for C4:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
ASUS A8N32-SLI
2GB Corsair TWINX2048-3500LLPRO
BFG GeForce 7800GTX 512MB
Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic
PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 510 Express/SLI
Logitech G5 mouse
Logitech G15 keyboard

All of my hardware is using the latest firmware (where applicable) and the latest (non-beta) drivers directly from the hardware manufacturer. I'm also attaching the results from dxdiag.

FWIW, these are the type of exceptions that I'm getting:

Unhandled exception at 0x7c8eefa8 in CaesarIVDemo.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x3df53dea.

Unhandled exception at 0x7c8eefa8 in CaesarIVDemo.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x3df53dea.

Yeah, I understand that. My point in trying that was to see what information is contained in the AnalysisLog.sr0 file and if this exception could possibly be related to SecuROM in any way. Considering that this should have produced the C:\AnalysisLog.sr0 file (if I understand correctly) and it didn't, it would seem that the unhandled exception is occuring prior to or during the code that is executed via the "Launch Analysis" context menu item.

I do see problems with your system. I'm guessing a laptop, right?

Your CPU is inadequate. You only have 790MHz where the minimum for the game/demo is 1.6GHz, so it won't work unless you replace the motherboard.

You also have your screen resolution set too high. Change it to 1024X768 (or as close as possible for laptops). Your video drivers are also old. Upgrad to either 81.95 or 91.31 depending on which your card supports.

Lastly your audio drivers are outdated as well and need to be updated.

Sincerely,
Phil

Okay, I tried reinstalling it on C: and clearing some space, made no difference. I've given up on that computer.

I tried downloading it onto my Dad's much better computer (2.2 ghz, GEforce4, etc). But halfway through the install his computer abruptly died. I don't think it was related, he's been having heat issues. But his computer is completely trashed, it won't boot up and it's hard drive might be fried.

He was inexplicably running Windows 2000 (why his newer machine had an older operating system I don't know), which I didn't realize at the time I installed. There's no chance that trying to put the Ceaser IV demo on somehow set off a chain reaction that killed his computer, right? I need to be cleared of responsibility on this, especially since I'll need to be borrowing money from him to upgrade!

I seriously doubt your attempt to install the game did any damage. The installer would probably have crashed to the desktop during the process with an error message that's all.

How do I get DXDIAG.TXT as my demo is not working on my computer?

As Gallifrey mentioned, click START > RUN then type DXDIAG and click OK. Let the program finish checking then SAVE your results to a folder where you can find the dxdiag.txt file like in your My Documents folder.

Comeback here. Reply to this thread. Type a mesage, then below the message area click on the Manage Attachments button. On the new attachment window, BROWSE for your dxdiag.txt file. Select it. UPLOAD the file. When it is done uploading close the attachment window. Now click on SUMBIT REPLY. The file and message are sent to the board.

Greeting all,

Wish I was happy to be here. I read this painfully long thread only to find out ( on the second to last page ) that the MX4000 isn’t supported. If I’m not mistaken, I had to buy that card to run CoTN. Buying a new video card every time I buy a Tilted Mill game is not what I had in mind at all.

What I find most disappointing is that ( from the looks of these posts ) the same problems that plagued Emperor are already evident in Caesar IV. Emperor was ( and is ) a great game except you have to be an engineer to get it run. Parts of this thread read like an application debugging session which should obviously not be the case just for a game.

The real point is that there are obviously very few games of this genre and those of us who love this stuff need you guys to succeed. The false debate about the popularity of this type of game is driven by the fact that so few of them have actually worked properly or have had any usable multiplay.

Unfortunately for me, I’ll probably buy a new card and the game at some point anyway. Like I said, I have few choices. Conveniently I happen to be an engineer so I have no concern about getting it run but I fear the situation will be the same as Emperor and I’ll be faced with an empty multiplayer lobby…

So I’m begging you… Please, please, please, get it together. You guys are the last of the last and if you fail, we all loose.

Was looking forward to playing the demo… Bummer…

Kaidel

It's interesting that you got the MX4000 to work with CotN because it is a DX7 card and CotN required DX9 hardware. The card was basically obsolete when you got it though, which is why I always try to convince people to get the best card or as highend of a card as possible so they won't find themselves in your position every year.

The game crashes for me after I click begin to actually start the map.

After reading the system requirements I cannot complain - I am lacking in two key requirements:

My operating system is Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2
My processor is a P3 733 MHz but I have been able to run many other games that claim to require a processor above 1 GHz.

I do have a decent NVidia 64MB vid card, 512 MB RAM, Soundblaster audio, and so on.

I'm a huge fan of Caesar III and Pharoah (oh yeah, and Lords of the Realm 2!) and was looking forward to trying this game out before I buy it. I know I need to upgrade my computer but I'm not sure I can justify buying a new computer just to play a game that I am not even sure if I will like?

Hi,
when launching the game, the screen blanks, becomes all white and stays this way. The music is playing and there is a cursor (hand) that I can move around but not selection (though blind) seems to be functional.

Dxdiag output attached.

System info:

Dell Inspiron 5100
512 MB RAM
Pentium 4 2.66 ghz
ATI Radeon 7500 mobility 64 MB

Update your video driver ... it dates back to 2003 ... and try again... << Driver Date/Size: 7/29/2003 15:14:02, 302592 bytes>>

www.ati.com

click on "Drivers & Software" tab/toolbar near top of screen ... proceed from there

laptop video cards(in general) and your system memory are near minimum specs for the game ... am personally more familiar with nvidia hardware ... but try what i suggested... update your sound drivers while you are at it ...

Am not familiar with your card ... but if it does not support pixel shaders 1.1 (usually 1.4 for ATI) ... you are hooped... no can do ... nvidia gives a black screen with the hand if card is pre 1.1 ... ATI could give white ....dunno

Sorry Marius but pec has a laptop (Dell Inspiron 5100), so he won`t get any driver from ati.com cos ATI does not supply drivers for laptops.

pec will have to go to DELL direct and have a look there.........or he could use the special tool which is able to transform full ATI-Catalyst-drivers for the use in Laptops fitted with ATI chip..........:D

They have drivers for laptops, Manni. I found one there yesterday for the Radeon X1400 moblity for someone else yesterday. They don't' seem to list any for the older cards though.

Unfortunately, the Radeon 7500 mobility seems to be one of the ATI RAGE-based cards. If this is true it won't be able to run the game even if a new driver is found, since Rage doesn't support Transform & Lighting (T&L) required by the demo.

The driver download page on Dell for the Inspiron 5100 is:

http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/type.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=INS_PNT_P4_5100&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=2552&libid=6

However, the driver listed there is very old, dated 2003.

Manni

He could try.........anyway

What I saw so far is to download a tool which tells people if they MIGHT use the Catalyst.

I downloaded the demo, installed it and have been unable to play the game. My results are indicated in my title. I asked the HP tech suport for help but they insist that my computer should be able to play the game. Yes, I know that my video drivers are older but they are the newest available from the HP site. nVidia's newest drivers don't support the graphics card I have. Any suggestions?

Is that a laptop you're using? As far as I know the graphic chip 440 Go is old and does not support the needed shaders for this game to run.

If that Go 440 is generically the same as the MX 440 it's a DX7 based card and as Amenirdis said, it probably doesn't support the various graphics features required by the demo.

It's interesting that you got the MX4000 to work with CotN because it is a DX7 card and CotN required DX9 hardware. The card was basically obsolete when you got it though, which is why I always try to convince people to get the best card or as highend of a card as possible so they won't find themselves in your position every year.

Gee Keith, thanks for the advice. Next time I’ll be sure to spend money I don’t have on a card I don’t need so you won’t have to answer that question again.

My point however had little to do with my personal configuration and more to do with attention span. I had to read a great deal of nonsense to get to the answer and my issue was simple compared to the others. If the game is released and everyone’s machine requires a different tweak to get it work, it will ( as I mentioned before ) bring us to empty lobby syndrome. As you know Keith, I was an avid proponent of the inclusion of multiplayer in this version ( very happy you did by the way ) and I would like to be able to play with more than the five people I know that will get it to work no matter what.

I never had the slightest problem with Emperor.

I always find it curious when someone I’ve never seen before in the lobby says they never had any problem with Emperor. The fact of the matter is for the year and a half when I was playing the game almost daily, I watched it go from 20-30 people in the lobby at any given time to zero because of patch problems and a variety of multiplayer crash issues. The final nail in the coffin was the last patch that didn’t have the correct version information in it and had to be modified with a text editor to get back in the lobby. After that, the lobby was dead… Except for the five of us…

I’m not trying to bite anyone of course but my point should be very clear. I want this game and I want people to play it with. If it’s a mess to install I obviously won’t get my wish.

i've tried running through as many of these posts as I could, and it seems most people are having problems once the game starts up? Alrighty, so I sorted out my security problem, fortunatly the securom stuff did work, here I was afraid it would screw something up. Anywho now I have a new more entertaining issue. The game will load which is good and I went to begin the demo mission, simple right. Well as soon as the loading screen pops up I get a beap and now the box shows in game and not the background. Specifically it says
"C++ library error
Run time error
location of files
This program has requested it to be shut down in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team.

I've never seen one like this but it definatly seems like a coding error or something, I really don't know. I'm sure everyone would prefer I upload my directx diag as well but sadly it's been so long since I did that I don't rememeber and i didn't catch the intructions in previous posts. Either way it makes me sad the demo is not as polished as it should be it seems. Thank everyone, good luck with your copy.

You have a Intel chipset and not a graphics card. Unfortunately, the Intel chipset running your graphics doesn't support things like Transform & Lighting effects used by the demo. The only thing you can do is to get a DX9 compliant graphics card for your computer and disable the onboard Intel graphics currently being use.

Rachelc258, you may have a SecuROM issue when trying to launch the game.

Right click on the Caesar IV Demo icon on your desktop or on the Ceasar IV EXE file in the install folder.

Click on LAUNCH ANALYSIS from the list. Run the application. This will create a file called AnalysisLog.sr0 in your C:\ root folder.

Zip this file up and email it to support@securom.com with a description of your problem and the name of the game/program. Provide them as much info as you can. They will examine the file and get back to you.

You can try disabling all the background applications on your system and see if that will help get the demo running. If it does then there is a startup program running that is causing a conflict with the demo.

You can try running from the safe mode, or you can disable all the startup apps from the MSCONFIG menu.

To do this you click START > RUN and typ MSCONFIG.

Under the General tab click Selective Startup. Then click on the STARTUP tab and disable all the applications listed there. Close the MSCONFIG window. You will have to reboot your system. After the system is restarted try the demo. If it works then you have a startup application conflict.

To find the offending startup application you go back to MSCONFIG and re-enable everything. Now un-check just one itemt. Close and restart the system. Try the demo once you are back at the desktop. If the demo works then the item you unchecked is the offending program. If the demo still won't run, go back to the MSCONFIG > STARTUP menu and uncheck one more item. Close and reboot. Try the demo. If you get to the bottom of the startup list with everything unchecked and the demo doesn't work then the problem may be hardware or driver related.

You can re-enable all the startups if you don't find any individual one that is causing the problem.

Do you have Windows update KB917422 installed? If you do you may wan to try uninstalling KAV 6.0 and see if that avoids the problem There have been several reports that KAV and KB917422 together cause problems with the demo and other applications.

I did a little looking and found a discussion about the 0xC0000096 error messsage in on the Seti board at Berkley University. One poster seemed to have an idea of what is causing the problem on the system of the person reporting the problem. You can see his reply in that thread here:

Here is a quote from Keith... it has the most important things.

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIRED
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 1.6 GHz or equivalent AMD(R) Athlon(TM) processor or higher
Windows(R) 2000/Windows XP Home or Professional (including Service Pack 2 or higher)
512 MB of RAM
64 MB video card (with Hardware T&L including Pixel Shader 1.1 or higher support)
2.0 GB of free hard disk space
CD-ROM Drive
DirectX(R) 9.0c
Mouse
Keyboard

FUNCTIONALITY
The Caesar IV Demo is designed to function with Windows(R) 2000/XP-compatible graphics and sound cards. Drivers for these devices are provided by Windows(R) itself or the respective card manufacturers and may occasionally result in compatibility problems beyond our control.

Phil has offered to help you get software issues sorted, Chim. The graphics cards used for gaming are the fancier models. All you have to do is ask him for help with each issue.

I found my ati 9600-128 works ok for Caesar4. It can handle all of the graphics processing on the 128... ::If:: I had bought an ati 9600-256 that would let me look at all of the fancy details, but the 128 does a pretty good job. I am quite pleased with what I can see using the old card.

I was afraid of that, because your stuck with that chip, then. Too bad they put in such an old graphic chip as it does not support the shaders as mentioned above. I'm sorry.:( You could ask the manufacturer if replacing the chip for a better one is possible. But even if they can/would do it, it might get too expensive than it is worth. And depending on the new chip they'd put in, the game might still not work.

As pointed about above, you must have Service Pack 2 installed for the demo to work. You only have SP1.

You must have NETFramework 2.0 installed and the version of DX9 from the demo install or newer installed.

Your base computer should be able to run the game, but your video card is old and may not be suitable. The game requires DX9 compliant hardware. The MX4000 is a DX7 card.

You have old drivers for your video card and your audio card. They need updating.

While you have more than the minimum amount of RAM necessary to run the demo, more RAM will help with its overall performance. If you can I would upgrade to a minimum of 1024MB (1GB) RAM.

Right now the two major things working against you are that you only have SP1 installed and your video card.

Here is the section on upgrading your computer right from the demo's README.TXT file:

UPGRADING

If you are dissatisfied with the level of detail that your system can handle, then you may wish to consider upgrading. The Caesar IV Demo performance is most affected by your video card, followed closely by the CPU speed and the amount of installed memory in your machine. A high end video card and CPU will usually result in considerable frame rate improvements, while installing more RAM will result in shorter load times and less hitching during game play.

Keith

Didn't fit? How old is your system? The 9800 should be a AGP card. You should have a AGP slot. Only the newer systems don't have AGP slots. They have PCI-Express slots, which are faster than AGP.

Keith,
I appreciate your attempt to help, but I said a few posts ago that I've added SP2 and upgraded my video drivers to the current version. I can attach mygraded dxdiag for you if you would like. I also have DirectX 9.0c (the version which is added when you install the demo). I'm not sure what you mean by my video card not supporting DX9.

I feel like your post was very dismissive of me. Simply telling me to go upgrade my system doesn't necessarily help me to understand the problems. When I downloaded the demo, I read the requirements for the game and to me it seemed like my system (video card included) met the requirements, yet my game doesn't work. I'm also not sure what was meant by the quote to end your post. Of course I understand that performance issues can be dealt with by upgrading my system, but I felt like your quoting that was scolding me for simply asking questions that were "covered" in the readme file.

Also, if I were to go buy a new video card, what is recommended? How about audio card? I still have the cheap one that came with the computer when I bought it.

What you need is a graphics card that can handle shading and dx9. I am used to ATI products so taught myself how to figgure improvements..

Hugs to all, Julia

I really do appreciate the help and I know that's what Keith was trying to provide. It's also weird what I understand and what I don't. I'm still confused about different cards supporting different versions of DirectX. I guess because my current card is NVidia, that's what I'd prefer to stick with. Do I need a card with 128 MB memory or higher? I think I can get a card that's 128 MB with shading for a decent price, but I want to make sure I understand fully what I need before I make the purchase.

Edit: Julia, I completely agree with you. I think many people would benefit from that. I know other games come with lists of appropriate cards.

Keith
08-21-2006, 12:01 PM
Having a list is one thing, but it won't guaranty that they will work with every computer & software/driver configuration.

Theoretically, any DX9 compliant video card that meets the minimum system requirements should work.

I did post a list of video cards from ATI and Nvidia and what DirectX version they support in another thread here on the board somewhere.

chimaera282
08-21-2006, 12:08 PM
So DirectX comes out with new versions periodically. New games tend to utilize the current version of DX. Video cards can handle certain versions of DX, but eventually get outdated and can't handle the newest versions. Is this pretty much correct or is there something I'm missing?

Keith
08-21-2006, 12:14 PM
Basically that is right. If the card is DX9 compliant, it should be able to handle newer versions of DX9 as they come out.

Hi,
Having played every version of Caesar I was eagerly awaiting the new version coming out. So much so, that I have already pre-ordered it for delivery after its release in September. I have downloaded the Demo and cannot get it to work. I have met all the requirements to run it as you stated, but all it gives me when I run the program is a hand with a pointed finger on a black screen, I even let it run all night thinking it may take some time to load!
I have attached the Dxdiag file for your information.
Can you let me know what is wrong, as I am now worried that I have ordered the game and it will not run on my computer.
Thanks

your mx440 gfx card is probably not powefull enough to play the game.

i have 2 desktop pc's at home, 1 is a P3 950 MHz with a Ti4200 128 mb AGP card and 896 mb ram, the other 1 is a P4 2.6 GHz with a fx5200 gfx card 128 mb and 512 mb ram.

the P3 has SP1 installed and the P4 has SP2 installed.

The P3 is able to play the demo on reasonable setttings at ok speed (even though it has SP1 installed and uses a DX8 GFX card)

The P4 is also able to play the game BUT the FX5200 is a very poor gfx card as it runs on a slower ramdac as the Ti4200 card in the P3. On the P4 the demo was running very laggy (like earlier posts stated). So i decided to swap the gfx cards. Now the P4 can play the demo very well at great speed on the Ti4200 (DX8) card and the P3 crashes when trying to play the demo when using the FX5200 (DX9) card.

just to show that the gfx card is extremely important to this game and it doen NOT need a DX9 gfx card to run, but it needs a GOOD card to run.
This also prooves that the DEMO does NOT need SP2 as my P3 with SP1 and the Ti4200 card could play the demo OK, not great, but playable.

PS. hi mouse, i'm still the same springer from the C3 forums ;)

Thanks for the reply Phil.
One question, I have three USB attachments, my wireless keyboard, my Modem and my external hard drive. To make Caesar work are you suggesting that I remove all three?

phil-maskell

Thanks Phil,
Have disconnected the external Hard-Drive but Caesar still comes up with a black screen and the pointed finger only. Looks like a new graphics card then. This is turning out to be expensive as my graphics card is only 18 months old!

I haven't read through this whole thread, but thus far I haven't seen this problem posted anywhere. Whenever I try to install the demo, I get a windows error message: "Setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". The error signature says the following:

AppName: caesar4_demo_en.exe AppVer 12.0.0.49974
ModName: caesar4_demo_en.exe ModVer: 12.0.0.49974
Offset: 0001e48b

The error report itself is extremely long and I can't figure out how to save and send it, and it won't allow a copy and paste to text file.

I have service pack 2. Please note that the error occurred when I had the 8195 NVidia drivers (I upgraded this morning).

Can't really tell from the info you posted.

If you are attempting to install the game on C:, you don't have enough room. The game requires a minimum of 2.0GB of freespace on the hard drive it is installed on.

There seems to be a problem with Athalon 64 processors and some applications including the demo. The Windows Data Execution Prevention program may be kicking in and keeping the install from running.

See this thread:

Hey Phil,
Thanks for the info and help.
Can you recommend a graphics/video card that is not too expensive that will run Caesar IV and its current demo. Hopefully I can buy it via Amazon or EBay.
Thanks again, so far, for your help.

THanks for the info Phil.
I have a M848A motherboard and after reading the book I am slightly puzzled to see if it is compatible with my motherboard. It states:
"AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) Slot
The AGP slot is used to install 3D graphics adapter that supports the 8x AGP card which is also backward compatible with 4x AGP card. The slot is keyed to support only the latest 1.5 volt AGP cards."
Do I take it then that I can go ahead and purchase any of the AGP that you have recommended?

sigh, another computer, another problem. This one on the brand spanking new laptop I got yesterday. So it's possible the problem originates from the fact that I am still "moving in" so to speak (installing everything, copying over my old files, etc).
anyway, the problem is an error message when I try to start it:
game exception
unhandled exception: n/a
type (those boxes/blank characters)
file: [...]tmil/source/engine\D3DDeviceManager.cpp
function: tmill: engine::d3d::DeviceManager::Changedevice line:338

i don't remember how to do the dxdiag (silly, as I had no problem doing it yesterday), but basically, the computer:
dual core 1.66 ghz
1 gig ram
60 gigs free on the harddrive
don't seem to have a seperate video card, instead, i've got
128mb (Shared) Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
windows xp service pack 2, etc.

I'm guessing it's because your computer doesn't have a graphics card but rather a Intel chipset on the motherboard. The Intel chipsets don't seem to support graphic features like Transform and Lighting (T&L) used in the game.

If you post your dxdiag.txt file we can confirm that.

I didn't download the demo, but I'll surely get the game. I also think I'm gonna buy myself a new laptop.
As I'm gonna buy it to play C4 confortably i'd like to know how to choose it :

Here are elements from the computer description. please be kind enough to tell me if i'm making a mistake with my choice cause I can change things inside the hard config (Toshiba Satellite P100-284)

nVidia GeForce Go 7600 is it good enough?

Ok, good news and bad news. Direct from the Intel website:

Only the Intel® G965 Express Chipset Family supports hardware Transform and Lighting (T&L)1. All other Intel® graphics products do not have hardware support for T&L. In most games, transform and lighting calculations can be performed on the processor with acceptable performance. A small number of games that specifically check for hardware T&L support may fail to run.

1 Although the chipset hardware itself supports T&L, future graphics drivers will be required to utilize this feature.

So it does, but doesn't. :( The T&L demands from Caesar may be too much for your 945GM to handle.

It looks good, the 1.6 Ghz processor is the minimum required according to the demo Readme.txt so don't look for stellar performance. Performance tips in the Readme.txt suggest that more RAM helps.

UPGRADING
If you are dissatisfied with the level of detail that your system can
handle, then you may wish to consider upgrading. The Caesar IV Demo
performance is most affected by your video card, followed closely by the
CPU speed and the amount of installed memory in your machine. A high end video card and CPU will usually result in considerable frame rate
improvements, while installing more RAM will result in shorter load times
and less hitching during game play.

Some parts of your registry are denying access to the demo registration process. There have been problems with this and other applications apparently and I did a little looking around. One way to fix the problem is a reinstall of Windows. Another is via a registry utility program. You can read more about it on the sticky thread (http://forums.vugames.com/thread.jspa?threadID=29275&tstart=0) in on the Caesar IV Technical Support section of the Sierra Forums where I posted one possible solution.

RAM and HD capacity are fine, so all I see you need is more CPU speed.
The CPU should be just fine as it is one of the new core duo processors for the laptops and they don't need faster speed usually. Even on my laptop with single core did Oblivion - which is equally demanding on the machine - run. And with that graphic card and ram it should - in theory - run C4 not too badly.

Amenirdis
08-23-2006, 10:29 AM
Absolutely, Phil. :) I guess what I meant to say is, that these new cpus are not as bad as one might think when only looking at the speed. :)

Hi Phil,

I'm back!!

After spending hours on the internet scouring for a new graphics card based upon your recommendations, I have an additional question. It is, do I have to have the GeForce AGP cards or can I buy the following which seems to meet the specifications:
"Connect3d ATI Radeon 9600 256MB DDR DVI TV-Out AGP"
There is a limited supply left of these so if it does meet the spec I would be grateful for an early response (not that you are slow in replying anyway!) so I can get one before they all go.

If I were you, I would be looking at newer technology than a 9600, but that's just my opinion. Something in the X series perhaps.

Of course, I could recommand a 9800 pro if you can find one, that's what I run here. I don't know your budget. Otherwise it should be fine.

There are a lot of places that sell 9600 cards so you don't have to worry about limited supplies. If they run out someone else will have them. Places on line to checkout are www.tigerdirect.com (http://www.tigerdirect.com), www.pcmall.com (http://www.pcmall.com), www.cdw.com (http://www.cdw.com), www.buy.com (http://www.buy.com), and a host of others.

Here's a page (http://www.buy.com/retail/searchresults.asp?display=&search_store=1&qu=radeon+9600&loc=101) from buy.com with the radeon 9600s. One on the 9800 (http://www.become.com/shop?gclid=CKT3pbam9oYCFSAoJAodjWvWVA&q=radeon+9800) from a comparison shopping page.

I noticed that the error message is mentioning kernel32.dll. There is a known conflict between Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 and Windows Update KB917422 that will cause this problem to occur.

The two fixes have been to uninstall the Windows Update or to uninstall the Kaspersky AV.

Still looking for a decent graphics card but not too expensive!

You stated before that you only recommended AGP cards as that is what I currently have. I have had a read of my motherboard manual and I have 5 x PCI slots that have the 32-bit PCI interface, does that mean I can now search for the PCI Express graphics cards?

Grateful for any assistance you can gived me.

No, sorry, Phil. You can't put a PCI-Express card into standard PCI slots. They are not compatible. If you have a mainboard with AGP slot then you need an AGP video card. There IS the possibility to put an ancient PCI video card into a pci slot, but that would be just a way to waste money. ;) :)

I don't think many games profit a lot from 2 GB Ram at the moment, but it won't hurt having them, either. In the end it depends how much money you want to spend on the laptop. I'd say graphicchip and CPU are the most important components and having min. 1 GB of Ram.
Just be warned - it's not easy to predict whether a laptop runs games at high details and great speed. But be prepared to pay the price for such 'power'. :o

spent way too much time and energy, and $, since demo came out trying to get my system to run this thing. problem 1, game exception, no video card, got a new one, had to be pci, have a low end dell, found one, nvidia 6200 128mb, installed correctly, now actually runs demo, for 10 seconds, then lag for 10 then freeze for 20, then repeat! uninstalled, reinstalled demo and card and screwed things up so bad had to run system restore, and of course that didn't work, had to waste hours getting system back up.......have 2.53 cpu, 512mb RAM, 19"flat panel with "billions" of colors and STILL can't run this !@#$%^^%$@@! thing!

Am I missing something???????

Apologies if this problem has come up elsewhere.

The demo installed with no trouble, but this is the error I got on launch:

The CaesarIVdemo.exe file is linked to missing export kernel32.dll:SetFilePointerEx

Nothing seems to be wrong with the kernel32.dll file, so does anyone know what that "SetFilePointerEx" bit means?

Thanks.:)

Yesterday, I clicked the bloom in the game, and suddenly, the game play was terrible to where eventually it just didn't respond. I thought about upgrading to 4Ghz ram (I have 2 now) but then after reading these boards, I thought maybe I should just update my video card. Followed what the "tech" said in our online tech session, and BAM my screen went black and stayed there! I shut power off, restarted, prayed hard, and bingo-bango norton "go back" came up...thank my lucky stars.
What do you think went wrong? I WANT BLOOM! any help from you all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the input, any and all are welcome. Yes i should have spent the extra 200 and gotten the 3ghz intel 4 and then the ability to upgrade with agp slots, but I tried to stay in my meager budget, blah blah.....just got this in the spring. Ashame it takes that much to run this tho, task manager says uses about 250k, the same as civ city rome and I can play that on high settings, anyway I realize their different games, hopefully this demo release will get a patch released sooner to possibly solve alot of problems. thanks again!

You may have a conflict with another program and the Windows Update KB917422.

We know of one specific conflict that will cause the error message that you are seeing. That being, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 and KB917422 don't get along together. The solution has to been to uninstall KB917422. However, doing this removes a Windows vulnerability fix so use with caution. Others have found uninstalling Kaspersky AV 6.0 gets past that error message while leaving KB917422 in place. However, that leaves you without any virus protection. So it's a choice of which is the lesser evil if you happen to have KB917422 and Kaspersky AV 6.0.

The demo also requires that you install the DX9 version that is supplies. Older versions won't work. The demo also requires the install of Microsoft .NETFramework 2.0. The demo installer will offer both of these so be sure to allow them to install.

Sounds like you are having a SecuROM related issue. Right click on the Caesar IV desktop icon or on the .exe file. Run the Launch Analysis functiono on the right click menu. Find the C:\AnalysisLog.sr0 file in the root folder of drive C:. Put it in a zip file attach it to a email with a description of the problem and the name of the game. Send it to support@securom.com. They will look at it and get back to you.

Thanks Keith. I don't have Kaspersky, or KB917422. Any other thoughts?
