It seems the demo comes with a newer version of DirectX than was on my system. I am puzzled by this however as I always keep my system up to date with Windows Updates (well Microsoft Update actually). How did a new version get released without it being widely distributed? And will this help to resolve any other crashes other games experience?

Microsoft constantly updates DX9 all the time. I had a copy from 2004 when COTN was new on my system. There were at least a dozen DX9 updates between then and June when I updated my version from the Microsoft support site.

They just released a newer version on August 8th.

Hi Keith, thanks for the reply.

I realise that Microsoft frequently put out DirectX updates, I am just concerned that they don't bother to put those updates onto Windows Update. They update everything else through there, I am just curious why not DX.

You'll have to ask them. :)

It would make sense though, but that's just you and me.

If you're taking a head count, add me to the list which will make THREE at the given moment. After the update with SP2 I never updated that until a couple of days ago to the August 8, 2006 version.

Sincerely,
Phil

Me too

umm that's the version included on the download... or at least it wont update from it... just microsoft trying to authenticate you system ... <with god knows what in their active-x download> and a free microsoft tracking cookie for your digestion... nice alert on my system... Win2k ... maybe different for XP users ...

Also for the record the idiots who attached the .Net Framework to the demo ... overwrote my current installation... requiring a security patch ... to patch their DOWNGRADE... not tragic ... but irritating.

The demo installer will only update the NETFramework protocol not downgrade it. If you did have a higher number it won't install the version from the demo. The only thing I could foresee is that a newer beta version may be overwritten.
