I am an official techbeta tester for Windows Vista Beta. A fellow tester and myself have noticed that the demo seems to be specifically coded to only work on an exact version of DirectX. The error message we get when trying to launch says "DirectX version out of date" or words to that effect.

Please do not lock users into a specific version of DirectX. Please code the game and any future demos so that they look for a version of DirectX of at least a certain version and not a specific version.

Thanks.

The demo should work with the DX version it comes with or newer. There is a new DX9 on Microsoft as of 08/08/2006.

Hi Keith, thanks for the reply. Im talking about Windows Vista which comes with DirectX 10. As far as I know you cannot downgrade it to 9.0c and I wouldn't want to try to either :p

Btw, I've been meaning to ask. Are you a Tilted Mill employee, or just a forum moderator. You have provided a number of helpful replies to people but I have no idea in what capacity you serve :D

Also FYI, I'm posting a link to this thread from the Windows Vista official beta newsgroups. If you can get any kind of official response posted here, it may help other testers. Thanks.

I am neither a TM employee or forum moderator here at the TM boards. The luminary title you see was honorary for the release of CotN. I do moderate on the Sierra boards for the citybuilders. I'm not a employee of Sierra either, just a volunteer moderator that was invited to do the job there.

I've seen some posts here where Vista beta users do have the demo running, so they will have to tell you what they did.

As Ryster Im also a techbeta tester for Microsoft Windows Vista Beta, and connot get this game to run under any condition's due to DirectX.

The message that is displayed is "DirectX version needs updated. Please install DirectX version include with Cearsar IV or from Microsoft." and here are the screen shots from the installation and trying to run the game.

P.S
"DirectX version needs updated" should be "DirectX version needs updating" you might want to change that.

I know from some VISTA-User that the demo runs for her.

***ich hab die Demo unter Vista installiert und spiele sie auch da. Unter XP hab ich Hänger und Aussetzer im Spielefluß und unter Vista (5472 - 32Bit) nicht.***

...which means: I have installed the demo in VISTA and are also playing it perfectly. Whereas it lags with my XP. With VISTA build 5472/32bit it does work.

(The user means it could depend on the build of VISTA)

Sorry for double-posting, but this is the right threat for it:

Here is what Tilted Mill Entertainment Inc.`s President told me:

"As you know, Vista is being officially released after C4. Nevertheless, C4 should run on it (and Media Center)."

(MY interpretation) You MIGHT need to install and run your Vista in 32-bit emulation and then the demo will work. Just me though, but worth a try.

Sincerely,
Phil

Why would my Vista need to emulate 32-bit when it is already a 32-bit operating system?

Seriously though, I have just installed the latest build released early this morning (late last night for you Americans) and the demo now seems to install and run OK. HOWEVER, the installer did still ask me to install DirectX 9. It said it would not downgrade later versions so I let it continue. I was then surprised to see it copying over a bunch of DirectX 9 files... Lets just hope that it hasn't screwed DirectX 10

Is anyone at Tilted Mill running Vista so they can verify that their game and installer work fine on this operating system? I would like to volunteer my services as a beta tester if you need some more people testing on Vista. Thanks.

Well, you do, but others are using the 64-bit Vista beta as well. What I said was NOT directed toward you. I was but interpreting Manni's listed quote from another. If you would, read more carefull as it was obvious why I said what I did.YEESH  !!!

Sincerely,
Phil
Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think anyone mentioned the 64-bit version of Vista here in my thread. Besides, even with the 64-bit version, 32-bit applications are automatically run in WOW64 (32-bit emulation) mode.

I've got the demo to work in Windows Vista.
Download this DLL (http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/download.php?d3dx9_30download0UImTIaElS) and place it in Windows\System 32 and the game Works YEY
