Re: What are you playing now?

Playing Banished, as well as Pharaoh/Caesar3, and even Emperor sometimes. Looking forward to Builders of Ancient Egypt. I've heard good things about Ostriv and Foundations.

Re: The possibilities for new city builder games

'Banished' is a really nice game. It's sandbox, which some gamers might not like, but I really like it.

Emperor. I learned to say Happy New Year in Mandarin from that :)

Thanks, Keith. One of my favorite things to do late at night is to play 'The Good Life' custom map on Pharaoh, on Very Hard, and play until I run out of money. No gifts, no do-overs, when I go negative, I quit. Sometimes the games are long, sometimes short. I like to try different strategies, Clay, ...

I understand your frustration; I have had some less than enjoyable moments with Steam support. However, right now, I love them. They always responded to my (less than nice) emails, and since I told them I shouldn't have to enter my birthdate Every Single Time I wanted to check out a game, (since the...

Emperor was good, but needed monuments. Yeah, I know they had them in the campaign. I mean in Open Play, so you knew when you were done. Other than that, it was really good. I still play Pharaoh, sometimes. It's kinda buggy, though. Still, it's pretty and satisfying. Hopefully, the gang will make an...

I play from time to time; just last night, as a matter of fact. I like to try different characters, to see how my gameplay changes. Last night, I started as an Elven Archer (Elrajim), and had to take a farmer along almost immediately to absorb the damage while I plinked away from longer range. My bo...

Exactly.

Nothing wrong with gifting someone who wants gifts. Lots wrong with forcing gifts on someone who doesn't want them. Nobody should have the ability to force a person to play a certain way.

I had a situation with gifting, too. I offered to trade with someone, who then sent 10,000 limestone, 3,000 sandals, etc. She said I could "repay" the gifts with oil (my resource). So, for a week I sent her all my excess oil. Meanwhile, she asked me a couple times if I had gone on a pilgrimage quest...

You jumped straight from "Easy" to "Hardcore"? You're a brave little Journeyman!

Oh, and yes, the Loser Screen is interesting. It usually inspires me to immediately start another game!

...be sure to get healers asap... Also, try to get a watchtower asap, because those are extremely good against powerful raiders. Heh, yeah, for sure. I realized very quickly that winning the game depends almost entirely on getting herbs and stone. They are by far the most important resources. Get o...

I played it when it first came out. I don't anticipate playing it again. Problem is, there are just so many other good games out, both from TM and others. There are only so many hours in a day.

I tend to not play conservatively enough. I used to use all my initial potions up immediately, but recently I've saved them, going back to town, instead. It takes longer, but I need the potions for when raiders attack. If you get into trouble in town from the raiders attacking, you're in a bad way. ...

I tried a couple of games with the Trickster, and, although the pumpkin-throwing was fairly powerful, the enemy's pumpkins were also powerful. I had to use my healing potions more often to kill the pumpkin-chuckers, leaving none to use when the Raiders hit the town. :( I'll give him a try some other...

I generally find that farmers are cheaper than guards, though. So, if I'm ready to go adventuring, and need a buddy, I'll buy a level 3 farmer for 25 gold, rather than a level 3 guard for 50 gold. Neither one is going to farm, so what difference does it make?

I dunno, Xarne, I've found that if someone has to die, it's better for it to be a farmer that I can replace for 13 gold. Because when I die on Hardcore, it tends to end the game. ;) I can't tell you how many times I've run around town avoiding raiders, hoping to get my health up to a point I can bat...

Guards ARE expensive, but when a level 6 raider attacks, I'd rather have a level 1 guard in a watchtower than a level 4 farmer outside fighting and dying. The farmer can certainly be replaced cheaply-if your character survives.

Guards with ballistas are very helpful. If the raiders come in with more than I can handle on my own, guards prevent townspeople from dying. And if my health is bad, and raiders attack, the guards can often handle the raiders by themselves. You're right, though, they're a waste in the party.
