I think it's right, as it is. If you look at ADnD, for example, becoming a wizard involves years of study and work. In contrast being a sorcerer is an innate talent; you're born to it. That seems to be what TM was going for.

Yeah, my idea would be for him to want to settle the score himself, in that instance. It would give you a reason to take particular townies into the wilderness.

Boss monsters would be cool, too.

It would be interesting if your townies periodically had a quest for you. Your herdsman could have heard rumor of where magical oats are found, or perhaps your craftsman has a grudge to settle with the trolls who ate his family. Anything that would give the townies a little more personality and back...

Yeah, the dialog should function as you describe, IMO. It's the exact opposite of every other button, making it very counter-intuitive.

If you don't want the items they're making, you should have them sell them for gold. Click the button that says, "Not Selling". I do agree, any additional control over the process would be great.

Most of the ideas of the OP are interesting. I have some concerns as well. Casters: It looks like healers are a bit buggy. You're right, that it's pretty intuitive, now. Its usually just a few swings before you get a feel for a weapon. I just like numbers. :) The desire for hard data is hard to let go, I guess.
