Since I just got it working fine again, I thought I'd report back. First off, the problem where the game crashes in the tutorial seems to be one of RAM allocation and Vista. If you're using Vista, be sure you've updated to Service Pack 1 (SP1). This contains lots of neat little fixes, including KB94...

Crashes as soon as I add the Ice Cream Shoppe. Every time. Just wanted to add a "me too" to this. Crashes every single time in the tutorial when adding the Ice Cream Shoppe, completely duplicate-able. Every time. This only happens with Update 5 going. Vista 64 here, 8gb RAM, E8400 CPU, 280 GTX GPU.

While we wait, I wanted to bring something up that I'd love to see done here. Back in the day when I was playing board wargames (we're talkin' 1980's here), there was a little game called "South Mountain" from West End Games, based on the battle that preceded Antietam. The battle background historic...

Yep. I saw this when I decided to click through the buttons after not getting a campaign or scenario to pop up. I hit the "Edit" button and it gave me a windows file dialog chooser box, and the cursor was disabled.

The TAB key is your friend in those situations, btw!

I had the same problem for a while last night, and then right before I went to bed it installed.

I fired it up, and sure enough, there's that empty "Campaign" screen and so thoroughly satisfied I logged off and zonked out.

When my company offered me a transfer from Chicago to Northern Virginia back in 2002, one of the deciding factors was my fascination with the Civil War. For a good while out here I lived not far from one of Mosby's battles near Centreville, and I try to make Sharpsburg and Gettysburg annual pilgrima...

*Finally* finished a game (with impressions)

Be it CTD's in previous versions, or the collapse of my town due to my own mismanagement, I've never won a game of Hinterland with any build. Today I have an hour or two before work, so I started up a game with the easiest parameters possible: no raiders (which worked, I think I had seen this featur...

BUG: (checking dupe status) Resizing sreen lockup

Before I elementool this one, I wanted to make sure it wasn't a dupe. In the current build (and I do this all the time and didn't notice in prior builds), when the game starts and I resize from windowed mode to full screen, my character locks in place (no movement) on screen. It is fixable: I bring ...

I like the two movement speeds, actually. My guy walks if you click close, a run if you click far. Very good implementation.

Bug: Goblin Patrol labelled as Orc Patrol

Nothing major and easy to dispatch, but I've fought two separate fights at Goblin hangouts that were labelled as "Orc Patrol". Later when the town was attacked by a properly-named group of Wandering Goblins, I figured this might be a bug.

New version plays very well.

Start up the Steam console.

From the "File" dropdown menu in the upper left, select "Go Offline".

You'll only be able to play games that are 100% installed and up to date, but there you go!

Patches and updates *should* happen automatically, as long as you don't launch the game with Steam in offline mode. If you launch with Steam online, it'll automatically detect any updates, and download and install them for you prior to entering the game.

Bugsy-- Had the same problem from time to time. Here's the fix: Completely exit Steam, as in right click it if it minimizes to your taskbar. Then restart it and you should be fine. Occasionally doing a complete computer reboot will fix the problem as well. Just got home from work and got the same me...

Hmm. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the initial alpha download. The filesize is about the same as that of another steam-delivered beta for a different major development house's fall release title.

The screenshots they've given us look great. Obviously not a graphically-intense game like SCS (with all the bells & whistles, anyway), but with a very strong unifying art design element.
