Waiting for server when i try to start a game. There is no progress on the bar.

This may happen when either the servers at Steam are very busy, or when your connection is slow. Kill the waiting application and try again.
You may need to update your DirectX, just noticed. And perhaps also your display drivers. |

Hi, yes I have admin rights. This is my work laptop, but i havent had problems with other games. Ill try to kill the waiting application. Got an excellent connection.

I've been having this problem too. I managed to play once, last night, before the game froze and I had to reboot my PC. Once it started up again, I poked around on the boards to see if anyone had had freezing issues; none of those, but I saw that people were updating their DirectX as a precautionary measure, so I did as well.
Now I'm getting the flat gray screen when I try and start the game (Was not an issue before updating DX) and the game hangs on both creating characters and waiting for server. I fix the former by minimizing and restoring Hinterland, but waiting for server just hangs and hangs forever. It shouldn't be a bandwidth issue. I'm connected over wireless with 54 Mbps. I don't think it's a video card issue, either, since I was able to run the game fine the first time. I've discovered from other incidents that my video card drivers are effectively un-updatable thanks to stupidity on Gateway's part, so hopefully fiddling with them won't be required. DX diag and game log thingy included below. ADDENDUM: I'm already an admin on this machine, since this is the only user profile. Last edited by Crivens; 10-01-2008 at 11:12 AM. |

Crivens to update the drivers on your laptop there is an ati mod tool that once you run it you can use standard ati drivers

For me it was the domain issue. As I've posted earlier i logged locally instead on my work domain. I downloaded the latest graphics driver too.

I'm having the same problem. I'm on a domain on this machine, but my account set up as a local administrator. I've tried restarting Steam, I've updated drivers, I've even reinstalled DirectX, nothing works. Please assist.

Hmm. If you have a fast and flat connection, try to delete all local content and download again. I'm not entirely sure that verify always does what it is meant to do, so it might be worth to try.

I've tried that twice, no change. On this log, I tried changing the resoultion to 1440x900 fullscreen, and alt-tabbed out to quit it once I got tired of waiting.

Hmm, you have to login to the local machine domain. On my computer it is the <Machine name>(This machine) on the login screen. Got 2 other work domains also.
Dont know if it helps any. I also installed it on my desktop computer and it worked fine, no domains there. Only problem on both pc's is the minimap in widescreen mode, bleeding, sĺ i play it in a 4:3 format ![]() Last edited by robban73; 10-02-2008 at 08:17 AM. |

Yeah, logging in the local machine isn't happening. That implies there's something wrong with TiltedMill's code, because as long as I'm a local admin there should be no problem. This is a bug, and they should fix it.

Anything further on a pending fix for this issue? I have steam on my work machine and running into the same issue. Local admin privledges and on a domain.
